Tech family, we did it, don't ask me how I got it in, but with me, is the Lenovo yoga slim7 pro? Yes, this is not the slim 7 with AMD that you've seen other reviewers compare and rave about. This is the pro model, which is even better, ladies and gentlemen, grab something to hang on to, as this is going to be a wild ride. Let's hit the music all right now, if, at the end of this video you liked what you watched. Do me a solid and hit that thumbs up and the subscribe button. These videos take a ludicrous insane amount of time to make, and it shows your appreciation for them. Specs on screen for the model, I have it's: a dozen 4 800, h series, CPU, 16, gig of ram one terabyte SSD and a 14 inch 2880 by 1800 display with a 90 hertz refresh rate.
Yes, you heard me correctly a 90 hertz, refresh rate, alright, let's start out with performance, because this thing is a monster. You've probably seen charts like this one, showing how powerful apple's new MacBook Pro with the m1 chip is well AMD and Lenovo have something to say about this in cine bench r23, which maxes out the CPU this little laptop slaughters, the MacBook Pro in multi-core, it's literally 34 percent faster. I mean it's double the speed of the Dell XPS and the hp specter 14, which is crazy, talk, it's the same story with geek bench, which performs a variety of tests in multi-core. This laptop cannot be touched by its competitors. Now, on the flip side in single core, it's a substantial win for the MacBook Pro and a decent lead for the intel competitors check out how long it took me to open the integrated software development, environment, IntelliJ and compile and debug some java enterprise edition code.
This laptop is very competitive for tasks that are heavily single threaded, though, like reloading a large MySQL database, you can see that the slim7 pro lags behind. The same goes for adobe bass. I can't pronounce it adobe's premiere pro, which, although has been improved to better, take advantage of dozen's power. It still doesn't seem to make the most of it at the end of the day in real world use. This laptop is more than fast enough for most tasks and as more and more applications take advantage of higher core counts and become better optimized Verizon.
I anticipate that this laptop will start to pull ahead of its competitors anyway. The great news for this laptop doesn't stop with its multi-core performance, where this laptop really shines is how little heat and fair noise it exhibits to achieve that performance seriously. I could barely get this laptop to run warm in the time I had it. Take a look. You can see that when the CPU is maxed out for 10 minutes straight, it has by far the lowest surface temperatures of its competitors and, yes, its surface temperatures are cooler under load than the MacBook Pro 13 with the new m1 chip.
Even the CPU core temperature is 20 degrees Celsius lower than competing intel laptops. There are two performance modes that this laptop offers: the default, intelligent, cooling and extreme performance. The main difference is this: extreme performance runs the fans louder, but can sustain higher performance for a longer period of time. Take a look at the following graph. You can see that when running cine bench r23 on a loop for 10 minutes, extreme performance mode enables the laptop to maintain its performance close to the result of a single run, whereas on intelligent cooling, there is a more noticeable drop in performance on intelligent cooling.
I measured up to 41 watts of power draw and on extreme performance a whopping 63 watts. For the most part, though, the laptop drew 35 watts under load on intelligent, cooling and 41 watts on extreme performance. Now in intelligent cooling mode, which still gets that excellent 10 000 cine bench r23 score, the fans make 44 decibels of noise. It may look a little loud from the graph, but in reality it isn't that's because the fans aren't high-pitched the MacBook Pro, for example, has a high-pitched fan noise, so you'll notice its fans just as much when under load, even though the MacBook Pro is technically quieter. Extreme performance mode is, of course loud, but, as mentioned, you get sustained high performance all in all for everyday use.
This laptop ran very quiet and very cool, far more so than its intel competitors, including the hp specter 14 and the xbs-9310 Lenovo did an excellent job with the thermal management here when it comes to performance profiles for most people, I'd recommend leaving it on the default intelligent cooling, but I do like that. Lenovo gives you the option of the other profile. The SSD in this laptop is insanely fast. In fact, it's the fastest SSD I've ever tested in a laptop ram is in dual channel mode, running at 200 megahertz, and it comes with Wi-Fi 6 which performs well alright. Let's talk about graphics, I tested fire strike and got a very pleasing result, almost the same score as intel's new tiger leg, BC graphics, when we double-click into the score, though you can see that this laptop's graphic score is good.
However, its score is void by high CPU performance. Now- and this is the important thing in real world gaming- there is a big difference between the graphics performance required for casual games like League of Legends and AAA titles like borderlands, 3 or cyberpunk 2077. What I found is this: the graphics in this laptop were plenty for playing an esports title like league. I was able to run it at the highest settings at the laptop's native resolution of 2880 by 1800, maintaining more than 70 frames per second. This is a great result.
Now, intel's, 11th, gen, Xe graphics, will get you more frames in this kind of game, but neither of these laptop graphics are going to allow you to play most AAA games at any playable settings. Jarrod from jarred's tech has a great video, comparing the two in detail across a number of games which I'll place in the description below what I saw in his video is. It is rare where intel laptops get a reliable 60fps in games and AMD laptops do not which matches my conclusion now, if you are super keen on playing esports titles on this laptop, this display does have a 90hz refresh rate. As mentioned intel, BC graphics will be more likely to max out that refresh rate on this kind of games, so you may want to consider getting the intel variant of this laptop. However, honestly, you can lower the settings to something like medium, and you'll be able to max out that 90hz refresh rate even with AMD, so I probably stick to the AMD model if you can find it, as in general, AMD, has much better multi-core performance and runs cooler and quieter before we finish with performance.
I do want to say this. Ry zen 5000 series is coming out for laptops in the next couple of months and if the rumors are to be believed, it will close some single core performance gap that you've seen here. If Lenovo has achieved this kind of performance with so little heat and fan noise on the dozen 4000 series, I can only imagine how the performance will be when they update their range to that series. Okay, let's talk about the display, as this is another standout win for this laptop. There are three things that make this display unique and very special.
Firstly, it's a large 14-inch panel with a 16 by 10 aspect ratio. I've never seen this sort of display in a laptop, it's bigger than the 13.5 inches of the specter 14 and substantially bigger than the MacBook Pro 13s. Secondly, is the resolution most laptops are either 1920 by 1080 or 4k. I find that 1920x1080 isn't pixel dense enough for the content to look super sharp. On the other hand, 4k has too many pixels and results in poor battery life, as more light is required to push through the dense display.
This laptop's display sits nicely in the middle with a resolution of 2880x1800. You get the best of both worlds, a super crisp image, and you don't lose a lot of battery life in the trade-off. The third thing, and, as I mentioned up front, you better hold on to something for this review. This laptop has a fast refresh rate 90hz panel, so things like scrolling and animations on the screen are smoother than on a regular laptop in terms of the quality of the panel itself. You can see that this is a very good panel, with almost 400 nits of brightness, great contrast and 100 RGB color.
It doesn't quite reach the heights of the MacBook Pro, but I would absolutely take the trade-off for this larger panel over the MacBook pros any day. On that note, I found that 150 window scaling enabled me to see a large amount of information on the page, but didn't have everything. Looking small causing me to squint the 16 by 10 aspect ratio is a good middle ground. You see more information for productivity applications like word that goes down the page than a traditional 16x9 screen, but you don't see as large a black borders above and below movies like on a 3 by 2 aspect ratio display. When I compared the amount of information I could see, I found that on the MacBook Pro I could see 75 lines of vertical code in IntelliJ, the he specter, 14 78 lines and this laptop 81.
Now, of course, you can fine tune, the font, sizes etc. , but where I'm going with this conclusion is the following: you will see a decent amount, more usable space on this 14 inch 16 by 10 screen than on those other devices, and I personally noticed the difference in productivity tasks before we move on from the display. My unit had no dead pixels, no noticeable backlight blade and did not use noticeable PWM flickering to lower the brightness, which is good. The display isn't a touch screen, though, and it is a little glossy. You may notice some reflections in my b-roll that being said, because it is a bright display.
I didn't notice any issues while using the laptop indoors, even in a brightly lit room in terms of the build quality and the look and feel of the laptop overall. This laptop doesn't look as classy as the best laptops' chassis out there. This includes the MacBook pros, the racers and the Dell XPS those feel high quality, but overall, there's nothing wrong here with this chassis, it feels very sturdy with no flex and no sharp edges and its almost edge to edge display makes it look more modern than the MacBook Pro with its large bezels. The screen does open with one hand and windows, hello. Facial recognition always had me logged in fast.
Overall. This is a high quality chassis. My only knit with the unit is its dark color, which does pick up fingerprints in terms of its size. It is larger than its competitors, but then again it's got a larger screen. This laptop has a similar weight to the MacBook Pro 13, which is perfect for a 14-inch laptop, but it does come with a bigger 95 watt charger, my two cents, this laptop shouldn't, need a charger.
This big, even though, on the extreme performance profile, I recorded a burst of 63 watts of power. This was a burst. Normally, it draws only 41 watts. I would think that this laptop should be equipped with a 65 watt charger. Perhaps this was just my unit that had this charger anyway, that would reduce the overall carry weight.
The good news here is this: this laptop does charge with USB, so you can always buy a smaller charger anyway. On the topic of ports, it's a pretty decent story. You've got two USB c ports on the left side that both support charging and are the faster USB 3.2 gen 2 speeds of 10 gigabits on the right side. You have a single USB-C, 3.2, gen1 port and a headphone mic combo jack. This selection of ports should have most people covered.
Also, I was able to run an external 4k display at 60hz refresh rate using DisplayPort over USB. This all being said, it would have been good to see USB gen4 support here from those USB ports, and I don't like having both charging cable ports on the left side. It means you will have to run a cable around the back. If your charger is on the right side, the keyboard isn't the most comfortable. The keys feel mushy compared to the MacBook Pro, though the keys feel like they have more travel, but the MacBook pros feel more precise, I'd, say in terms of comfort.
I'd give this laptop's keyboard a slight edge over the MacBook. However, it really isn't as comfortable as the best keyboards on the market like the Dell XPS's or Lenovo's own ThinkPad line. I do like Lenovo's standard keyboard loud a lot as there are no surprises. Plus I like how easy it is to change the function lock, so you can use the function buttons for their primary purpose. Not things like brightness up and down many laptops require you to go into the bars to switch this or worse.
They don't allow you to switch it at all. This laptop has two backlight levels and the keys were really easy to read in all lighting conditions. The trackpad is very good. It's large, smooth and accurate, it's not quite as good as the MacBook pros, but very close behind it. The sound quality of this laptop was quite good.
This caught me off guard, as the speakers are downward facing. Normally, I find these sorts of speakers become muffled when you use the laptop on your lap, but in the case of the slim7 pro I had no problems. In fact, the audio quality and volume was better than on my specter 14, and that does have front facing speakers. The laptop sound quality isn't at the lofty heights of the MacBook Pro, but it's pretty good, and you aren't going to have any issues with it. If you are someone who needs to know latency mod results here, they are, and they aren't great here's how the webcam looks and sounds in excellent lighting conditions.
The back of the laptop came off easily, with all screws being accessible. Other manufacturers like hp could learn from this approach as they place screws under the rubber feet, making them harder to access inside you'll find a user replaceable SSD, which is good. You can also see the large 61 watt hour battery, which is bigger than the one in the MacBook Pro. However, don't expect this to reach the lofty heights of the MacBook Pro's battery life in casual use? While writing this script, I found I got six to eight hours of battery life when in battery mode and the screen at low brightness, but the screen was still running at 90hz refresh rate, my guess is, if I could find a way to reduce it to 60 hertz I'd get better battery life. I did measure the CPU drawing around 4 watts, sometimes even as low as 3 on battery.
This also makes me feel that 9 hours should be possible on this laptop with its 61 watt hour. Battery factoring in power draw from other components. By the way this laptop ran Ubuntu Linux very well. It correctly detected the Wi-Fi card, which almost never happens by default on the other laptops that I've tested Linux on heck. Even things like the webcam worked out of the box on Linux.
Alright, let's wrap up here. This is clearly one of the best laptops ever made. There are no ifs or buts about it. In fact, it makes leaps forward in terms of its display and phenomenal multi-core performance, especially given how little heat and fat noise it produces. In fact, I would say it's the best all-round laptop I've ever used compared to top intel laptops like the specter, 14 XPS 13 racer book 13.
This laptop has a more useful display, performs much better in multi-core and doesn't feel uncomfortably warm to the touch like those laptops do. It also has other benefits, such as better sound than the specter 14 and a more comfortable keyboard than the racer book. Those laptops chassis do look and feel like a slightly high quality machine, and they do perform better in single core compared to the MacBook Pro 13. This laptop has a more useful display. It's that 14 inch 16 by 10, 90 hertz refresh rate.
It's got far better multi-core performance, a slightly more comfortable keyboard, replaceable SSD and can run Linux. The MacBook Pro 13 has better single core performance, a higher quality feeling chassis, better audio and improved battery life. Overall, though, this laptop really does show off what PC laptops can do, especially when powered by AMD. Anyone who tells you that apple has completely destroyed. PC laptops in 2020 clearly hasn't used.
This laptop, in fact, given how well this laptop performs on dozen 4000. I can only imagine how well this kind of laptops will perform once they are equipped with dozen 5000 series. As mentioned, this laptop is one of the best laptops I've ever used. The only thing really holding it back right now is its availability, particularly in the USA, from what I've gathered, the Lenovo store and Best Buy seem to prioritize laptops that fold into tablets with touchscreens. Clearly this isn't that kind of laptop, even though it's confusingly branded as a yoga which, in the USA yoga refers to Lenovo's line of two-in-one laptops.
If you want this laptop sold in the USA, like I do make sure to retweet my tweet to Best Buy Lenovo I'll link that, in the description below, hopefully Lenovo's marketing, department and Best Buy, will realize that this is a very important laptop and will start selling it. Now, if you're, not in the USA, and you see this laptop for sale, just buy it, don't overthink your decision as it may sell out, just like the IdeaPad 515 did anyway. I hope you've enjoyed this. Look at a unique and incredible laptop. If you did, you know what to do smash that subscribe.
Button hit the thumbs up and the notification bell. I would truly appreciate it: I'm going to post the links to my discord, server, Twitter, Instagram and even tick-tock in the description below until next time. I will catch you later.
