Which should you get? OnePlus 8 vs OnePlus 8 Pro | Unboxing & hands on

Hey, it's Rory, researching Markham, and today is the morning after the big 1+8 series launched and what an interesting duo of smartphones when I was watching it or when I saw the two devices you know I'm the immediate thought that sprang ? ? like wow. These are two phones that represent sort of both sides of the same coin. That is one plus, and we'll get into that a little later. But today's video is going to be about something that I received in the mail. So this morning, OnePlus sent me like a package which I expect it to be the smartphone, and normally you know, I, don't I don't tend to do. Unboxing I'd, rather just get straight into like the first impressions, but then the box that I received was this.

This box, which I don't know if you can tell, but it's not your normal box, so I guess like at this point. It would be a bit of a disservice if I didn't unbox it so yeah here you go here, is an unboxing roll, the intro so yeah. Obviously this is not like your regular retail one plus box. I'd this is the media review kit I, believe that gets sent to the media by one plus and normally like even for us like. This is pretty extravagant kit.

Normally, what you're getting is like of the phone and then like a PDF document, but this is this- is this is something else so, let's just pop the lid, and then we'll see what happens so. This slides out you go I think, like the whole effect that you get it's like I guess it represents the fast refresh rate screen, but you can see like the top layer has like these lines across so here the late sort of pops open to reveal. The first thing is: there's this book, that's red, it's one plus red, it's a book. So if you flip the pages, you can see like a bunch of highlights that specs. Some of the cool features that you get to see for this smartphone.

So this is basically like the reviewers guide that most of us get when we receive these devices and then inside you also find the smartphone. This is the smartphones box, which is a lot more like this is. This is what you probably expect from a retail OnePlus device box, haha you're, getting like the classic red box right and then over here. You've also got two cases, so we've got the one plus eight, so the phone is the one plus eight pro, but then they gave me one plus eight cases I think there is a mix-up. I have another two cases over here.

These are the one plus eight pro cases, the same colors, so you're getting the cyan bout sandstone bumper case, as well as the carbon bumper case, which looks pretty good anyway. Let's just take a look at the smartphone now, so, if we're to pop this lid, you go really nice, and you're immediately greeted with the smartphone. So this is the one plus eight pro in a black colorway that it's called onyx black. As you can see, it's a reflective sort of shiny back, it's a shiny, back design, and we'll put the phone aside for now. Let's see what else is in the box, so you get this little here.

Oh, we've got your big start. Guy safety information got this invitation letter I, don't know what this is. I, don't think, you'll get it, but I don't know, and then a sim eject tool, stickers, they're stickers inside you also get a case, a special one, plus sort of jelly case. The cool thing about is they sort of to get their next level? It's like a little of never settle branding. We've got never settle over here.

I guess it's pretty cool on top of that. You've also got this, which is the charging cable, the warped charge, cable in classic one plus white and red colors really nice. So this is the warp charge power brick, as you can see down here. It says 30 watts, which is your know, expect that this is the WAP charge.30 T I, believe you can get it to 50% in like 23 minutes or something like that which is really fast. That is pretty much all there is in the box.

So this is the one plus eight pro and, as you can tell like, it looks like a classic OnePlus smartphone I'm, not a big fan of the text down here it looks it makes it look a little sort of el cheapo, but the build and stuff he hides. It feels really nice, it's a pretty big phone, but it doesn't feel that big in the hand which is nice, it has to do obviously with the aspect, ratio and the curved sides, but yeah. That's it. It's powered on and yeah there you have it. There is the smartphone now I could just go on and on and talk about the OnePlus 8 pro, but I think what would be more interesting is if we were to take a look at this smartphone compared to its little sibling.

The 1+8 and luckily I, have one such 1+8 right here. So if we were to pop the lid and there you go, you have the smartphone in this little sort of case. Oh, and if you pop this out, you've got like the case, but this one is for the OnePlus 8. Instead, then, you've got the cable, and you've got the Hardback same, walk, Church, 30, watt power, brick, and this is the one +8, the regular small version, so the big one is in black. The small one is in this beautiful green like genuinely.

This green is like one of the coolest colors that I've ever seen like this one plus eight is one of the prettiest phones that I've ever seen. Simply because of the way the color looks like look at that, it's so beautiful and if you tilt it a bit off X. This is a little blue, and it's like this beautiful sort of is it cyan. Teal I can never remember which ones which, so I mean when you saw the smartphone's launched you probably liked. The first thought in my head was like okay, so which one do I get then do I get the 1 + 8 Pro, which is like everything, the obviously the main flagship smartphone, but it's also a lot more expensive or do I get the more affordable, and honestly I prefer the size of this one of the 1 plus 8 well I mean on paper there.

They actually are pretty similar on the inside, but like as an ideology like if we look at these two smartphones, even though they're both 1+8 serious smartphones, they're, actually very different in terms of concept, we'll start with the similarities. First, okay, so both of these are what I consider internally like high-end flagship smartphones, so you've got the best specs. Okay, you've got a snapdragon 865 processors, which is the most powerful processor that Qualcomm makes, and then it is mated to like 12 up to 12 gigs of RAM, so eight or twelve gigs of RAM and 128 or 256 gigs of internal UFS storage, really fast, really cool. On top of that, both of these devices- you know they look pretty similar, except that one is slightly smaller, obviously, and the other one is slightly bigger but genuinely like the holding it in the hand. You won't really feel that big of a difference because they are about the same width they're about the same thickness, just one is slightly taller.

So that's where, like the main difference is besides that you know, both smartphones also support dual SIM connectivity, and they're. Both 5g enabled devices, but they also don't support expandable storage, which is a little of a bummer, though they both also lack the three-and-a-half millimeter headphone jack, but they both have nice stereo speakers that are tuned by Dolby Atmos, which sound actually play by everyone, because you know for the longest time it has always given you pretty much more of everything compared to every other smartphone in its price bracket, and today, I've got a brand new Redmi Note, smartphone paper, it's like a classic device, so yeah the speakers sound. They sound pretty good, they're, very balanced left to right, which is actually quite rare when you consider sort of earpiece speakers, but that technology has improved a lot, and it's really nice to see that OnePlus has kept up with that. So this is definitely like a solid stereo speaker. Experience would I say that it's the best I, don't think so.

I still think, like the iPhones have a more full sound, but in terms of volume, in terms of in terms of left-to-right balance, you know these are like right up. There, they're perfect. They sound great another thing that you'll notice that both of these smartphones share is that they no longer have the pop-up selfie camera. Instead, they've opted for a punch, hole camera at the top of the displays. So, as you can see, they're both in the same position, and they are like a pretty small cutout I would say it's not huge, but it's also not quite as small as some songs' galaxy s cut out, because I don't know how some so much together, so tiny.

But anyway, these are both 16 megapixel cameras, and honestly I prefer this sort of layout I did like the mechanical sort of pop-up camera, but that obviously came flower limitations like they weren't able to you. It's like almost impossible to put water resistance in a phone like that, but for a phone with a punch hole, you know it's much more manageable, and this also means that stuff like face unlocking, will be much faster and much more responsive. And you know it's a one plus device, so the face unlocking and the fingerprint scanner are both really quick. Both of these smartphones also obviously support the warp charge, 30 T, which is there a proprietary fast charging technology. So they have to use the same cable and the same brick.

But then, if you do, you get really, really fast charging times so on the OnePlus 8 Pro, which has a slightly bigger 4510 William hour battery you're, getting I believe 50% in 23 minutes, whereas on the 1+8, which has a slightly smaller 4300 William hour battery those times are slightly shorter and then obviously, both of these smartphones also run on one plus's oxygen OS, which is like really nice. It's clean, it's almost stock, but it comes with a lot of nice features, and you know it's lightweight and all that. That's why enthusiasts love this, and you know like phones like this. They continue with that trend. So it's really nice to see and since we're on the topic of one-plus see things both smartphones also retain the companies alert slider, which has become like a bit of a signature for them this in the Android space.

So you've got the alert slider which can switch between all notifications vibrate, as well as silent, which is always useful. Buttons are also very similar, they're, both tactile, and they have a nice bump to them. I like the fact that there are buttons on both sides. I definitely prefer having all my buttons on one side of the smartphone. That way, if I need to like to put it down to watch like a video or something you know it wouldn't accidentally press any of the buttons I.

Do, however, appreciate the fact that it took the time to sort of straighten out the ports at the bottom of the smartphone, which is nice, and this is sort of like a mark of like a more premium. Smartphone goes like they took the time to sort of make sure everything is straight and right in the middle, which is something that's always nice, but that's pretty much. Where are these similarities between these two smartphones and then they start to diverge, and we'll start with the display. So both of these displays, although they are curved, and they look pretty similar, they're, actually rather different. So one is a six point, seven inch panel and that has a quad HD resolution, 31 68 by 1440, that's pretty high-res, and then it also has a hundred and twenty Hertz refresh rate, which is really fast and really fluid.

So if you have known fast refresh rate screens, you'll know that 120 is very, very smooth. On the other side, you've got the one plus eight, which has a slightly smaller display of six point, five inches, and on top of that, it also only pushes a full HD plus resolution. In this case it is 2400 by 1080p and which is still pretty high-res, but the other sacrifices that it also only has a 90 Hertz refresh rate rather than a 120 Hertz refresh rate. Now, if you ask me if it's something that you will notice in day-to-day usage honestly having both of these smartphones in front of me, if I really look for it, I can sort of see the difference like one is slightly smoother than the other, but the jump between 90 and 120 is definitely not as big as the jump between 60 and 90. So if you have a 90 Hertz panel, and you are using a 90 Hertz panel, I, don't think you will really miss the 120 Hertz besides, that, you've also got the fact that you know OnePlus spent a lot more time on the display.

So this screen- you know it looks better. It just looks noticeably better if we were to just pull out the Settings menu right here. You can see like immediately I, don't know if the camera can pick this up, but on the OnePlus 8 pro it is a lot. It looks a lot more color, accurate. The whites are a lot wider to my eyes anyway, and on top of that, they also have a technology called m/m/c, which is designed to help videos and stuff playback a little better on the faster refresh rate screen.

You can immediately see the difference when you pull up the display settings, and you can see that over here you have like the usual settings, but in the OnePlus 8 pro you've got an additional video enhancement engine which helps you tweak colors, and it also has something called motion: graphics, smoothing, which will help sort of videos plays better on this higher refresh rate display, but in general use honestly, like I, think you'll be happy with either of these displays, because they're very vibrant, they get really bright, difficult, great viewing angles for an OLED panel. They both curve in roughly the same way, which is very aesthetically, pleasing, of course, the curve itself. You know that's a bit of an argument: point between people, some people like flat display some people like curved displays, I personally, prefer both like I, don't mind either ones. I love the way the curve looks. But, of course, the flat display is slightly more practical because you don't get like the tops and bottoms slightly cut off, which is nice, but you know again.

These are perfect this place by the in their own right. It's just that the 1 + 8 Pro has a slightly better display. Obviously now the next major difference, you'll notice, when you flip the smartphones over. So if you look at the cameras, you have a quad camera set up on the 1 + 8 Pro wears you only have a triple camera setup on the 1 plus 8, and not only that, but the sensors, as well as the functions of each camera system, are slightly different. So only 1, + 8 Pro.

You have a 48, megapixel main camera, and this sensor uses the imx6 9/8 sensor that first debuted on the ability it was the OPPO find X 2 Pro, and we already know that that smartphone has a great camera performance, so you can expect like pretty good camera specs or this camera performance here on the 1 plus a pro, which is always good, because OnePlus has always struggled with camera performance. So I'm interested to see like you know how this really handles on top of that you've also got a 48 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera you've got an 8, megapixel, 3 x, telephoto camera, as well as something called a color filter camera. So I, don't know exactly what the color filter camera does. I've been messing around the camera for a little and I can't seem to find a way to make it seem relevant. I, don't know if it's just like a given camera or not at this point.

You know it's hard for me to tell, but if you look over on the OnePlus its side, you get a triple camera setup, so you still have a 48 megapixel main camera. But this time it is the IMAX 586 which is like the most common for an 8 megapixel camera I believe that you'll find in smartphones from the mid-range ?, even the high-end or even the affordable devices. They all have this. This is like a very common sensor. On top of that, you get a 16 megapixel, ultra wide-angle camera, as well as a 2 megapixel macro camera.

So the good thing about this is like it doesn't have like that. Color filters, camera which I feel like it doesn't really do anything. But the bad news is that you lose out on telephoto zooming, so you don't get that multi camera optical zoom. Instead, it uses digital zoom to sort of crop in, and I mean the difference in quality is pretty noticeable. On top of that, even the main cameras.

There are some slight differences, so I took a few shots of these smartphones from each camera like side by side, and you should be seeing them on your screen right now. Moving on you've got wireless charging so on the 1 plus 8 Pro you're, getting the 30 watt walk 30 wireless charging, which is 30, watts fast wireless charging. Apparently you can get like 0 to 50% in like half an hour, so that's really impressive, fast charging, but obviously you know it's proprietary and all that, but it will still work with normal cheese standards. It's just a little slower. So only one plus it.

However, you don't get any form of wireless charging which I think for a lot of people. Looking at the flagship smartphones, it's a little of a bummer because, like how much will it really cost to add wireless charging to your smartphone I feel like that cost shouldn't be that high. But you know it doesn't have it. So if you want wireless charging, you have to go with the pro. On top of that, you've also got the fact that one plus a pro is now finally ip68 dust and water resistance certified.

So if you remember the 1 plus 7 Pro, when they launched it, they were like. Oh, we didn't want to spend money on IP certification. So what we did was we bought a bucket instead and bucket water, and then they put a phone in the bucket water. It was like I, don't even know what they were doing there, but they finally started that out. You have ip68 water and dust resistance rating officially on the 1 plus a pro which is just which is just great, but you don't have any ip68 water and dust resistance rating on the 1 + 8 I.

Guess they spent that money on another bucket or something I, don't know. But that is the case. So if you want like a water resistance, certified smartphone, you have to go for the 1 plus 8 pro and finally, we've got a few spec variations. So like I mentioned earlier, the 1 plus 8 has a slightly smaller battery. It is 4,300 William hours, while the 1 plus 8 pro has a slightly bigger battery, which is rated at four thousand five hundred and ten William hours.

But you know they both support, 30 watt wireless charging and since, like the OnePlus, it is a small phone. It has a smaller screen. A lower resolution screen I. Think battery life should also be pretty similar, which is a good thing. Interestingly, however, these two smartphones, although they have the same 8 and 12 gigs of memory, they differ in the kind of memory that's included so on the 1 + 8 pro you have lpddr4 memory, whereas on the 1 + 8, you only have lpddr4 X, which is like the slightly older standard.

But will you really notice that in today, tasks like will it be that much slower that it becomes a hindrance at this point in time having used both LPD r5 and lpddr4 x, smartphone rams on smartphones or smartphones with those Rev like there's, really not much of a difference like if they're running on a light as well optimized software you're going to get a smooth experience either way. Maybe if you really like I, don't know I genuinely like for me: I, don't notice that difference, so maybe the biggest difference is just that on a spec sheet. You can show off that your phone has lpddr4 incest to like the wrap up of these two devices like which one should you buy? Well, that really depends on you because, like I said earlier in this video I think these are two very different smartphones for probably two very different people. Although yeah they look pretty similar, yeah they're, both OnePlus, but it really represents, like both sides of OnePlus, as a smartphone brand, you've got the OnePlus 8 Pro, which is like the aspirational smartphone, the phone that OnePlus ones to go towards that very same high-end, no compromises' flagship that you know they've been trying to kill since the start of the OnePlus one. You know so here you have an expensive smartphone.

It starts at I believe in the US. It starts at 899 US dollars, which is quite a lot of money. That's like proper flagship money, but at the same time, for the first time in I. Think ever you have a pretty darn complete flagship smartphone like off the top of my head. I, can't think of any main flagship, smartphone feature that the OnePlus 8 pro doesn't have that some other like galaxy s as 20 plus or like high an iPhone or high-end Huawei phone or even the high-end.

You know other devices that you can find like I, don't think that this is lacking in any sort of way, especially when it comes to specs or features, or you know those kinds of performances. Perhaps the only thing that's missing here are the ecosystem features that I like to talk about like that are able to be provided by Apple and Samsung, because they have that whole network of devices they have that sort of ecosystem like stuff like Samsung pay. Then you have victory across. You also have Knox, and you know you have all those other nice benefits that a truly premium flagship smartphone would have that. Maybe the OnePlus doesn't have.

But you know in the same vein, it is very comparable to the other high-end Android flagship smartphones like the Huawei's flagship smartphones and even their sister company, the OPPO fine x2 pro. So when the fine x2 Pro first came out, you know, I saw that smartphone, and I was like okay. So this is the new Huawei. In fact, the new Chinese smartphone flagship device that you can look for no compromises in specs, but still you know lacking in the same way, but at the same time also perfect in every other way, but obviously the Oppo has GMS, whereas the new p40 MP for the pro does not have GMS. Now, though, with the OnePlus April, you have another option: it's another high-end, Chinese smartphone, but this time it is on more stock, like Android experience, which enthusiasts will probably prefer.

So if you prefer that now you have a different route, you want something that is high-end and fast, but you don't want to some song. You don't want all the stuff that comes with a Samsung smartphone. Then here you can have it in the OnePlus without having to settle for like a Chinese, Android skin, and then on the other side of the coin. You have the OnePlus brand like from its roots like where it came from. So one plus was always this company.

That was like ok, we're going to give you as much as we can for as low of a price as we can, and they always put an emphasis on specs. They always put an emphasis on stuff that actually, you can feel- and you probably be able to use that- will make a big difference between like high-end, like a more premium smartphone and like a more affordable smartphone. But then they trim like other stuff, to keep the price low. So with the OnePlus it you have that pretty much nail down, so it has more water down camera. Yes, it doesn't have like wireless charging, it doesn't have IP 60 or a resistance.

It doesn't have like the kind of stuff. Those extra features that you were associated with the more expensive smartphone and as a result, you know you still getting a very, very similar high-end smartphone experience, but at a lower price point, because you're giving up on a few of those features. So this to me represents like one plus where they were the OnePlus 8 pro represents like where they're going and that's a very interesting split in terms of smartphones, and it's one that I can see sort of like okay, so here is where they're going here is where they're coming from, and it's sort of meets in this one plus eight series and I don't know: I kinda, I kinda dig that so, if you're trying to decide which one plus it is for you, you know you should think about like what do you? What kind of person are you? Are you the one that wants like all the no compromises? 100% like all the hearts that I can get in any other flagship smartphone, and all that I don't mind paying a little more than there? You go. You've got the OnePlus a pro, but if you're, okay with you know giving up on some features, maybe not such a good camera, maybe you're losing out on a cut on water resistance rating and wireless charging, maybe slightly lower resolution screen. Furthermore, you know you can still go for the OnePlus it because, like for my money right now, like they're, pretty comparable, if you ask me like I honestly, don't know which one I would choose, because, although yeah I really like the extra features on the OnePlus 8 Pro, the biggest deal-breaker.

For me, if is the fact that this has water resistance, and this doesn't, but I still like the form factor of this just a little more, that slightly smaller screen. Just has that sweet spot display size that I like where it's not too big and not too small. On top of that, you know the 90. Her screen is more than good enough for me, and the camera is possible good enough for social media. So, like that's pretty much all I need my smartphone camera for, but I will say, though, if you're planning on picking up this smartphone.

This is my favorite color I. Don't like the black because, it's glossy! This one is sort of frosted. It is a bit slippery, but this is just so pretty I just cannot get over. How pretty this is. The colors are also slightly different.

This also comes in this glacier green, but on top of that it has another colorway called ultramarine which the OnePlus 8 does not have, but the OnePlus it has a special color called interstellar, which is another glossy color that is very similar to sort of the Samsung Galaxy Note tens or a glow, for example. So yeah, that's that, but this one is definitely my favorite color, but that's what I think of the new OnePlus smartphones, the one plus it's series they're, very interesting, very exciting smartphones, I'd love to hear your thoughts. So what do you guys think of this new device? Are you on a one-pass phone like which one is the OnePlus for you like? Which direction do you? Do you want to see like the proper, no compromises' flagship, or are you still on the team like never settle, like kind of settling for slightly watered-down specs, but with a much, much better price power price point? You know I love to hear your thoughts in the comments below at this point. We don't really have the Malaysian pricing of the 1+8 and it process yet, but the moment we hear from OnePlus then we'll let you know so stay tuned to surge.
