You may not care about the Google Pixel line, but there is a very good reason for our industry why you should care about it succeeding or not. The first reason is going to be innovation. Now, I know that that word is thrown around a lot. The second reason is competition. Okay, specifically I'm talking very cautiously optimistic I, really hope that these devices- and you know the lack of ultra wine- and you know- there's been some non improvements on the video side with Google I had the chance to hang out with canopy today and play around with the Google Pixel for XSL. The first thing: I noticed right away was it's a very narrow device, and it felt very quick, very snappy, as you would expect, then taking photos with it.
The time that I had with the pixel device, it didn't feel like anything new was being brought to the table, found myself craving that ultra-wide, and I can't understand why Google has done this I. You know if photographs really well looks good, but functionality-wise it. It really feels like the pixel team in the Google Pixel forward for itself kind of missed the mark this year, and there was such potential: hey, Zack, PAC, welcome back to Zack talks, tech. My name is Zack. Let's talk about the tech that you love to wow, what a journey this phone, the pixel for Excel, has been for me.
I, had a lot of reservations about this. I will admit right now. Furthermore, I was wrong about this phone, even after the extended time I've taken before this review, and my time with it. However, I do have some butts and some reservations about this device that we do need to talk about. So for those of you that don't know, I have a history with Google the Nexus program and pixel, as both a customer and a reviewer, and it goes a little something like this I've owned, the Nexus 4, the Nexus 5, the Nexus 5x, the 6, the 6 P, and then the pixel Leiden came along pixel, one first-generation loved it.
In fact, my very first video recorded on this channel was recorded with a pixel 1 XL I'll leave a link for you guys up here down there. That is my very first video I recorded that then pixel 2 came along, and Wow things got interesting. I ended up purchasing, not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, not seven 7 pixels to excel units because they had that nasty blue ship. Then the pixel 3 came along last year. Oh, and I thought this is it this.
Is it right here? This is no problems in it and then, and then this happened here. It's turned off I'm, just gonna I'm, just going to put it whoa, whoa, oh holy whoa that really happened. I did a reset, and that happened I'm. Ok, it's fine, Google and I. We recently resolved things there.
Customer care was awesome, but yeah that happened and that kind of turned me off from the pixel line. That's when I started going, then the pixel three a line came out, and you know I never had a chance to actually use that unit. I do have some friends that have it they were very happy with it. I think the 3a line was a phenomenal success. Furthermore, I think it was a great move by Google to just kind of say you know what we're going to take the best features of our phone and put it into a plastic case, slash low price, and then here you go on a platter and that that's a great device.
Then the leaks started coming out, or you know, Google started releasing information about the pixel for the pixel for Excel and then the phone came out Google's going this way, while everybody else is going this way. That leads me to four reasons for butts four problems that I have with the pixel for Excel and as I was obviously applies to the pixel four, so we'll just say pixel for in general. First, let's talk about the good things. First, phenomenal camera as usual, Google knocks it out of the park. Take a look at some.
These photos, I took every single photo he's going to see here all came out. Great video is a little questionable, and we will talk about that. A little but very satisfied as usual, the other side of the camera on the video side. That's where we run into a little of a problem, see the pixel four can shoot 4k video, but only at 30 frames per second, if you're a creative person like myself, or you want to have options for doing things down the road. You know, there's no 120 frames per second there's no 60 frames per second, it's nice to have those speeds, so you can slow footage down.
You can do different things with it now the pixel 4 does not have that. If you go to 1080p, you do get those options. Okay, you get some higher frames per second options, but not in 4k. You won't get that detail on the selfie camera, the selfie camera used to be a wide-angle. It is no longer a wide-angle.
They took that out from the pixel 3 and I. Don't understand this year. You're going to need a longer arm. Well, let's go back to the good stuff I like how narrow this is. It feels like it's narrower than most devices.
I use this device for a long time before I put a case on it, and I probably will continue to use it without a case I like the way it feels this frosted feel the back. I like this color, simple branding. You know the camera module is whatever some people call it ugly. Like I said it serves a purpose, so no big deal. The button placements are all great I, really like how the accent the color here, ports are all accessible.
The fast-charging is awesome, got a nice flat top here. It's easy to run your fingers. The gestures work really well when you're moving back before they'll say that the Google gestures on here compared to other devices that have tried to keep bringing on gestures on the Android system are perfect, like I think up there with the iPhone kind of thing so really happy with the gesture system on here. So let's talk about a couple more things that you may want to think about. That I was disappointed with one ultra-wide camera in 2019 we saw everybody coming out with their ultra-wide cameras, Apple, Huawei, OnePlus and then Google decides to say no we're going to do telephoto, and you know what I can see the use case be able to zoom in further get those clear photos because of the awesome software, but for myself personally as a creative, as someone that's been using ultra-wide all year on the competition's phones, this was disappointing.
You know an ultra-wide with the competition's camera, and then I couldn't take the same photo with the Google Pixel for its unfortunate, but I'm, confident that Google is going to put the ultra-wide in their camera for next year, so that that's something to definitely look forward to one of the other problems I also had with this is the battery one day. I was getting. You know five and a half six hours of screen on time. The next day, my battery is at thirty twenty percent by two o'clock I unplugged every day about seven thirty, eight o'clock I've checked background tasks, I've checked, you know, I've turned things on or off. I did a bunch of checks with overheard last couple weeks and I can't figure out if it was a particular app or maybe it usage of the phone, maybe things will improve after a month.
I don't know, but it was really noticeable right away. During my testing for the last, you know two weeks two and a half weeks or so that you know the battery is I'm not having a good experience with it, and my last issue with the pixel four is going to be pricing. When you look at devices from Apple from OnePlus from Huawei, whoever might be- and you look at, for example, with Apple they're, giving you 24 60 frames, 30 frames, you know slo-mo all that kind of stuff they're giving all these video features all the camera features and then Google basically brings their awesome camera, but they kind of leave the video behind it makes you scratch your head. So what did you know it as I'm editing, the video and as I'm, getting to the part room talk about the pricing front? Page tech drops a video and just watch this. Alright, the first up for the day story, number UNO, the Google Pixel, for, as you know, during our break it came out.
It was announced that came out that whole thing and while a lot of your favorite YouTubers are pooh-poohing all over, it's no good phone with the specs, the spec good I actually think it's a pretty great phone and the moves that we're seeing from Google are relatively interesting here like well. For example, this move because of a leaked Google Ad a leaked Google ad, something pretty interesting. It shows that Google is actually looking to discount all versions. All models of the pixel for by $200 in its online store, so that base model 64 gigabyte pixels for would cost just about $5.99 boy. That's a deal but wait.
There's more Best Buy is also following through with their own promotion for Black Friday. That includes $400 off. So how this is gonna work is that if you want to buy an unlocked, pixel, 4 or 4 XL you'll get that $200 price reduction just the same as Google's offering. However, you could potentially get an additional $200 off, making any total, obviously $400 off, because math with a qualified activation, which means you buy the phone and activate it through Verizon 18 to your sprint, so a pixel for right about $400 off Frank. Yes, that makes that phone a great phone for that price.
If you bought one already that sucks, if you're thinking about buying one, do not wait, don't buy one wait for this deal and then buy one smart see math and stuff. So there you go if that pricing, actually through that's gonna, be a fantastic buy. I can actually recommend the pixel for or pixel for Excel at that price point. Wow, I really hope that happens. So that leads me to my final summary.
The pixel for and the pixel for Excel are great devices for about 90 percent of the population for the other 10% that want a little more flexibility and more options. I'm going to say: no: if you don't care about having more than 30 frames per second or 60 frames per second or 24 frames per second in video, then you will be happy with the pixel 4 or the pixel for Excel. Okay. If video doesn't matter you at all, you will be happy with this device. If you want just awesome photos, and you don't care about video, this is a great device.
This is the device for you, but if you want the flexibility to be able to do different things down the road future-proof yourself, then you may want to think twice about this device. Okay, there are other options on the market. You can look at they're gonna, give you greater flexibility, so that'll do it. For my review of the pixel for Excel, like I said, this is a great device for playing 90% of the population, but it's not for me, it's not for a lot of creatives because it's missing, like I, said that ultra-wide the wide angle, the selfie battery issues the pricing. These are all things you should definitely take into account and wait if you're deciding on this device is the pixel for Excel or in pixel for an awesome device.
Yes, it's an awesome device for 90% of the people for the other 10%, you know, look around do a little more shopping, and I'm sure you'll find something that speaks to you.
