Google Pixel 3 Review: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ By Alex Hong

Hey there, Alex here. So after revisiting the original Google Pixel in my previous video, I thought I should probably give the latest Pixel another go. If you recall, I actually did a video when the phone first came out talking about the display issue that I had. I was so disappointed that I just decided not to bother with a review at that point in time. The issue for me was a very obvious uneven tint on the display, which is made by LG, and I wasn’t the only one facing this issue. So the first thing I did when I bought another Pixel 3 again, is to take a long hard look at the display… Well, this one still has an uneven tint.

If you can’t see it, I don’t blame you. It doesn’t really show up well on camera, and not everyone is as sensitive to slight colour variance. It’s definitely not as obvious as the first Pixel 3 that I bought, and it’s at a level that I can probably live with. Anyway, apart from that, the display does look pretty sharp, and I think it’s an improvement over the Pixel 2 XL for sure. Slowly but surely, LG is getting better.

So now that I’m done talking about the display, let’s talk about the phone itself, and let’s start with the best things about the Pixel 3 just to balance things out a little. At the top of my list, would be camera performance of course. This is a little subjective, but for me, I just prefer the way that Google processes images. The colours looks more pleasing to me, it has the right amount of contrast, and the dynamic range is just right. Despite only having a single camera, I’ll take this over any other smartphone camera in the market right now.

But I do have to clarify that I’m talking about photos. In terms of video, it’s just about average, and the audio recording quality isn’t that great. For the front camera, it’s my favourite setup currently as well. I like the way it handles details, and dynamic range. Portrait shots looks quite nice too.

Google also added in a second wide-angle camera which I think a lot of people are going to love. I’ll have everything I took with the phone in a link below, so just check it out if you want to. Next on my list would be the software experience. This one is kind of straight forward. The software on the Pixel 3 is basically how Google envisions Android.

It’s clean, and it gets fast and consistent software updates direct from Google. It may not be the most feature-rich experience, but the few additional features that it provides are mostly pretty useful. And I think that’s it. The main selling point of the Pixel lineup has always been the camera and the software experience. It’s just that with each generation, Google gets a little bit better at making the other parts of the phone a little better.

So the Pixel 3 is a little more premium feeling with the glass back, the design looks a little more refined, the dual speakers sounds better, it’s a little more water resistance, the haptic feedback feels a little better, it now has wireless charging, and of course the usual bump in specifications year over year. I’m not going to go too in-depth here, but basically it’s a pretty incremental upgrade from its predecessor, the Pixel 2. In some areas like the battery life, I didn’t even notice any major differences. It’s still just a day of moderate use for me. When it comes to performance, while I feel like the phone is a little faster, I’ve seen people talking about their Pixel 3 becoming a little sluggish as well.

Notably, MKBHD recently released a video talking about just that. I’m not really sure what’s going on since I’ve not had any performance issues, but it is something to take note of. Which leads us to the conclusion of this video. The Pixel 3 to me, is all about the camera and software experience. The rest of the phone is just decent, especially when you compare it to the Galaxy S10e which is actually slightly cheaper here in Singapore at this point in time.

If camera and software experience are the most important things to you, sure, you’ll probably love the Pixel 3. But you know, the Pixel 2 actually provides a similarly great experience in those areas too, and for a significantly lower price now. Plus the rest of the hardware is actually not that far behind the Pixel 3. Then there is the potential display issues that you might have to deal with if you’re looking at the smaller Pixel 3. So yeah.
