Sony Xperia 5ii Unboxing By SuperSaf

- What's up guys? Saf here on SuperSaf TV, and we've got the brand new Sony Xperia Five Mark Two in the house. We covered the Xperia 1 Mark II, which I also have here a couple of months ago. So we'll get this unboxed, but we'll also do a bit of a hands on comparison to the Xperia 1 Mark II because there's a lot that's similar but there's also lots that's different. Box is actually quite similar, we've got some of the key features here at the back. And here it is. So as well as the device, you do get some paper work.

There's an 18 watt charger. It's not crazy, in fact this is the same charger that was in the Xperia 1 Mark II. And then we've got a USB type C, two USB type C cable. Now there are no earphones in my Xperia Five Mark Two box. This might be different depending on your region.

But my Xperia 1 Mark II, did come with earphones out of the box. Right, now let's get this device out of its little bag. And well, first impressions this thing is so so compact, it's definitely one of the most compact smartphones that I've held recently. Let's Of course get rid of the screen protector right away. Go.

And having a look at the back, I mean, this looks very very similar to the Xperia 1 Mark II And quickly bringing in the Xperia 1 Mark II here for a comparison, you can see that they look very, very similar. We've got a glass back with a metal frame. The frame however, is curved on the Five Mark Two, whereas on the One Mark Two, it is a lot more squared off. And moving over onto the front, you'll see that although they look very, very similar, both have a 21 by nine aspect ratio, we've even got pretty much the same, almost the same wallpaper on as well. The Xperia Five Mark Two has a 6.1 inch OLED display, whereas we've got a 6.5 inch display on the Xperia 1 Mark II. And the size is not the only difference, the Xperia 1 Mark II has a 4k display, and it's 60 hertz.

The Xperia Five Mark Two two has a full HD plus display, but this does have 120 hertz. And I'm so glad we have this. Now one of the things that I fed back on the Xperia 1 Mark II was, okay, 4k resolution, I'm sure a few people will find that useful. But the vast majority would choose a higher refresh rate over a higher resolution when it comes to a smartphone. So I'm glad Sony has taken that feedback on board, and we've got 120 hertz refresh rate on the Xperia Five Mark Two.

Not only that, we do have 240 hertz of the touch input. So responsive time is got to be much quicker as well. So when you're gaming, when you're just scrolling through your social media feeds, you really appreciate that higher refresh rate. So Thumbs up for that Sony. Now because of the smaller size of the screen, the Xperia Five Mark Two is, I'd say one of the most comfortable devices to hold in one hand that I've tried in a long time.

I mean, even compared to the Xperia 1 Mark II, which is a lot narrower compared to pretty much all other flagships out there, the Xperia Five Mark Two is even narrower, and it's around about the same thickness. And it's also very, very light, just 163 grams compared to the 181 grams that we've got on the Xperia 1 Mark II. Now just to give you some context, I've brought in the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, and you can see that the Note 20 Ultra looks absolutely massive in comparison, it's much wider, and it's also taller. Now taking a look at the cameras at the back. These are almost the same as the Xperia 1 Mark II, so we've got a triple 12 megapixel camera setup.

The primary camera has the equivalent focal length of around 24 millimeters. There's an ultra wide camera which has the equivalent focal length of around 16 millimeters. And then we've got the telephoto camera, which has the equivalent focal length of around 70 millimeters, so that's roughly around, I'd say around 2.8 times zoom. But one of the things that's missing here that we had on the Xperia 1 Mark II is the 3D time-of-flight sensor. So this is not here.

Honestly speaking I didn't really find much or use of it on the Xperia 1 Mark II for me personally anyway, so this is something that I'm not going to be missing. There's also the same eight megapixel front facing camera, but really what makes the Xperia photography and videography experience unique is the photo pro and cinema pro apps, which give you lots and lots of control over your images and video, everything from shutter speed to ISO, as well as having lots of different looks. Now I have discussed the Xperia 1 Mark II's cameras in detail with my friend, Michael Fisher, Mr mobile. But generally speaking, I really enjoyed using the Xperia 1 Mark II's cameras, because of all of those manual features, as well as the ability to have the fastest autofocus. I autofocus on any smartphone with up to 20 frames a second burst mode, which was absolutely insane.

Those features have made their way to the Xperia Five Mark Two, which I'm sure a lot of people will be pleased about. But a few things that I am definitely interested in testing out are things like the portrait mode, which really didn't perform well on the Xperia 1 Mark II. The selfie camera, again, something that was a weak point, as well as things like a dedicated night mode to get great low light photography. Now, these are things that I will be testing out, but I'm going to be real with you, I'm not going to have time to do a detailed SuperSaf style camera comparison of the Xperia Five Mark Two, just because I have so much other stuff to do right now. However, I will be posting some sample images on my Twitter and Instagram.

So do go ahead and follow me on there. I'm @SuperSaf. Now one new video feature that Sony have talked about is 4k HDR at 120 frames a second, which I believe is the first on any smartphone. And I cannot wait to test this out. However, I currently can't find it.

So I'm assuming that this is going to be coming with a software update. Now let's take a closer look around the Xperia Five Mark Two. So we do have front firing stereo speakers, one at the top, one at the bottom, which is absolutely great. At the bottom, there is a USB type C port. On the right hand side, we've got the volume rocker, there's a power button, which doubles up as the fingerprint scanner.

Seems to work pretty well. And then we've got a dedicated Google Assistant button, which you can just tap to launch Google Assistant. As well as a dedicated camera shutter button. On the top, yes, we do have a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, something we see much less of these days. This is something that we also had on the Xperia 1 Mark II, and it's great that we've got this on the Five Mark two as well.

Now on the left hand side, we have the SIM card tray. Now this does have space for a micro SD card, so you can expand the storage on the Xperia Five Mark Two, like we could do on the Xperia 1 Mark II. However, this does come with half the story. So we've got 128 gigabytes versus 256 that we had on the Xperia 1 Mark II. Eight gigabytes of RAM with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset.

So we don't have the plus, however, the 865 is more than capable. And we also do have 5G. Now I'm not sure if it's going to be different in different regions, but here in the UK, this does come with 5G out of the box. Now for software, we do get Android 10 out of the box with Sony's skin. Sony skin is something that I do like, it's quite minimal, and it's quite close to stock Android with some additional features such as Multi Window, which definitely does help on this very narrow 21 by nine aspect ratio.

So for example, you can have a video playing here at the top, and on the bottom, you could be browsing the internet, or scrolling through Twitter or whatever that is. Now we also do have site sense, which you can activate by tapping here on the side twice. And this will give you lots of shortcuts which will once again go towards that ease of use with one hand. Side sense for me, maybe I just, am not good at using it but I always find it a bit of a struggle with that double tap, and I never actually use it on Sony devices, but that's just me. Now as with pretty much all Xperia devices that have come out over the past many, many years, we do have water and dust resistance.

And for the battery, we actually have the same size battery as the Xperia 1 Mark II. So it is 4000 milliamp hours. However, we do not have wireless charging on the Xperia Five Mark Two, something that we did have on the One Mark Two. And finally price. This is coming in at around £800, which is around £300 cheaper compared to the Xperia 1 Mark II.

And although you are missing out on a few things such as double the storage, wireless charging, the 4k display, you are getting a 120 hertz display, which in my opinion, is much much more useful. We've got lots of smartphones that look the same. I like that Sony have gone with this 21 by nine aspect ratio. And the compact size of this.

I mean, you're not going to find really anything that has this sort of form factor. And I'm also glad that although this may be considered somewhat of a niche product to some, at least Sony has given us a few of the things that we asked for like the 120 hertz refresh rate.
