What's going on guys, my name is wade with tech daily and in this video we will be comparing the Samsung Galaxy s20fe to the new Samsung Galaxy a72. Now this is an interesting comparison for a couple of reasons. I think, with these two devices, this is sort of where Samsung's smartphone lineup transitions from the so-called budget or mid-range lineup, the a-series to the flagship, lineup, the s-series, and it's interesting to see how these phones differ. What we have here really is the lowest n s series phone in the s20 Fe with the newest highest end, a series device for 2021 in the a72, and I think it's important to break down the kinds of features and add-ons that Samsung includes with each of these phones in order to at least attempt to differentiate them from one another. So that's exactly what we're going to do in this video I'll go over. What's the same, what's different, what's unique with each and hopefully this helps you decide if either phone is right for you right off the bat.
Let's just quickly talk about pricing and availability, so we know what we're working with now when it launched last year, the s20 Fe retailed for around 700. Nowadays, prices on this phone have come down quite a bit, and you can snag one on Amazon for 649, new or even a bit under 500, renewed, which, by the way, is a perfect deal. All things considered. The brand new a72, on the other hand, launched a couple of weeks ago at around the 500 price point, but actually that too has seen a price cut already, with Amazon listings, showing it at closer to 450 bucks with some deals and discounts and maybe snagging a slightly used model. Like I mentioned with the Fe, these two phones are actually super close in price, which might come as a bit of a surprise and if you're interested in doing some comparison shopping of your own, I will leave some links down below to the cheapest available prices for these devices physically.
Both these phones obviously look pretty similar they're, both modern Samsung devices. After all, so that should come as no surprise, but there are a few physical traits and some features that set them apart. First off size wise, it may not be obvious, but the a72 is the larger device. It's a 6.7 inch phone, that's the screen size, while the s20 Fe is a 6.5 inch device. Most of that difference comes in height.
The a72 is about five or six millimeters taller, but not much wider, and I don't know that that screen difference is that much of an advantage either way. But it is something worth noting with the design. You obviously have the same style center hole, punch, camera cut out up top a slight chin towards the bottom on each and minimal black borders all around, but you can probably tell that those black bars are thicker all the way around on the a72, and it does have a slightly lower screen to body ratio in comparison in the hand, both these phones are very large devices, so either way you go. I think it could be a stretch for some people, but beyond just the screen size, the body and housing on these phones differ quite a bit as well, and that I think, could impact the fit and feel in the hand, even more than the display size. The s20 Fe has a slim and sleek kind of design with a sloping, tapered edge and sharper sides, while the a72 is a thick boxy phone with an almost flat sort of profile, all around the slim design and curved back on the s20fe makes it feel, thinner and more comfortable in the hand, while the a72 is a bit more chunky, so that might be worth considering.
Besides all that, though, the materials here are basically the same, you get a matte plastic rear cover on both paired with polished metal sides, and actually both these phones are water and dust resistant. Now too, which is nice to see, though technically the IP rating on the s20fe is just slightly better. Taking a look around at everything else, there's nothing on the left side of either device on the right. Both phones have the same power and volume buttons across the top is where you'll find the sim and SD card tray on both down below. What's sort of interesting is the a72 actually keeps the headphone jack? The s20 Fe, of course, does not have one.
We get the same, USB c port for charging and the same speaker setup on both as well. There's a single speaker down below and a secondary speaker in the earpiece for dual stereo sound and to me not only do both of these phones offer a great out loud listing experience. I think they sound pretty comparable too around back. The camera. Hardware also differs between these phones quite a bit, and I'll get more into that in just a minute.
As far as the unlocking options, both phones have an in-display fingerprint sensor. You can utilize, and with this I think it's pretty obvious that the s20 Fe can get you into the phone quite a bit faster than the a72. Everything from waking the device to reading the fingerprint to jumping to the home screen. It's all faster, and it's going to be the same story with face unlock as well. The s20 Fe has a noticeable advantage, and this is sort of the first hint that out of everything else, it's speed and performance that wind up being the biggest factor that separates these two phones.
Before we get into that, though, I just want to quickly mention that both these phones have fantastic displays, but there is something important that sets them apart. Spec wise they're, both super AMOLED panels. They both come in at a resolution of 2400 by 1080. The s20 Fe technically has a slightly higher pixel density, since it is a smaller display, but the real difference here is that, while the a72 gets a nicely upgraded, 90 hertz display of great add-on for an series device. The s20 Fe has that flagship, caliber, 120 hertz display now in day-to-day use.
Are you going to notice any real difference in swiping and scrolling and overall fluidity between 90 and 120 hertz? No, probably not I mean you might be able to tell that the s20 Fe feels a little more responsive here. My touches and taps are a little more fluid and the side by side comparison here could help in differentiating that, but getting a high refresh rate screen on either phone in general is just a big plus, and I think the a72 in particular having it this time around is a great add-on. It's just not quite as good as the s20 Fe. Everything else about the displays, though, is comparable, and I think the overall viewing experience with each is fantastic. Technically, you do get HDR 10, plus support on the s20 Fe, it's not on the a72.
You may not utilize that, but in general everything else. I think these screens do look pretty similar they're, bold, they're, colorful they're plenty bright. I personally don't see any real advantage or difference one way or another. They might be calibrated a little differently with the color balance, but all in all very comparable screens. It's just mainly that refresh rate.
That is the deciding factor, in my opinion, so, like I said, I think the single biggest thing that is going to separate these two phones is the performance aspect and with this there's a couple of things to consider. First off, let's talk about the processor now, depending on where you live, your s20 few ill either have this snapdragon 865 5g chipset, like I have here, or the Enos 990, and both of those are flagship. Caliber chipsets. The a72, on the other hand, has a very respectable snapdragon 720 g inside, but it is still a 700 series, upper mid-range spec, not a flagship component and that's absolutely reflected not only in the geek bench scores here you can see a huge difference in the multi-core score in particular, but also just in real world usage and performance. Now I do just want to say that both these phones are plenty fast.
They both got the latest android 11 and one UI 3.1 updates. The s20 Fe, though, is obviously just comparable to a 2020 top-tier device, and while the a72 can certainly keep up, there are times when it might be beat by a second or two at least something you can certainly see with this side-by-side test. Is that a huge disadvantage? I don't necessarily think so. Even when you push these phones a little harder with some games, the a72 tends to keep pace and loads up just a little behind the s20 Fe. It's certainly respectable, and I don't think you'll notice any performance issues or glaring problems in game.
They both perform flawlessly, and you probably wouldn't even- have been able to tell a difference if you didn't see the results side by side, but the difference still exists, and it just comes down to the fact that the s20 Fe has that highest of high-end spec inside, while the a72 does not, and that's basically, what we're dealing with here, flagship caliber versus upper mid-range for 95 of people is that performance difference so drastic that it warrants jumping to the Fe, no probably not, but for the long-term investment potential and for things like multitasking gaming higher end performance for people who want to get the most out of their smartphone. I think you're going to get much more bang for your buck in going with the Fe. It's also just tough to pass up now, mostly because these phones are so similarly priced now. What's sort of interesting on the other side of things is what we have with the batteries. The s20 Fe has a respectable 4500 William battery inside, but the thicker chunkier a72 actually packs a larger 5 000 William battery inside and paired with the slightly lower specs and lower refresh rate display.
I think that's going to yield a little more life for most people. Is it drastic, no, not really perhaps another hour or two during the day, but if battery life is maybe most important to you, it is interesting to see that the a72 potentially has the advantage here. One other thing to just quickly note: the s20 Fe does have those additional charging features like wireless charging and reverse charging, neither of which is offered on the a72, but I personally don't find that to be too significant of a missing feature. Finally, let's talk cameras and with this there's actually some big differences here with the hardware and the features, but maybe not in the way you expect. The s20 Fe offers a triple lens camera setup around back.
It consists of a 12 megapixel main lens 8 megapixels, telephoto lens and 12 megapixel ultra-wide. The a72, on the other hand, has a 64 megapixel main lens paired with similar 8 megapixel telephoto and 12 megapixel ultrawide lenses, and it even has the 5 megapixel macro lens thrown in there as well up front. Both phones appear to have the same 32, megapixel, selfie, camera and all in all, that would make it seem like the a72 has the better overall specs and hardware, but it goes beyond that. Specs aren't everything. Of course, feature-wise you'll actually find most.
Everything is the same. There's a fun filter on the a72, which is different. The a72 also has macro shooting capabilities. Like I mentioned, the s20 Fe offers live, focus video, so a couple. Differences in shooting modes, and you'll also see some settings differences as well.
Obviously, the a72 can shoot in the full 64 megapixel mode, but there's no video stabilization here. The s20 Fe has a few other additional settings and modes that you can adjust that aren't on the a72, but in practice I think you'll find that again there are some differences in the results that are maybe not in the way. You think a majority of the time. I've found that, even though the a72 might have some better hardware, it's the s20 Fe that produces the better shot. It has a better chipset inside for image processing, and you can see that pretty clearly with portrait shots here.
More than anything else, my hair gets missed on the a72, for example, and the s20 Fe is far more detailed. I also think the color balance on most shots is better on the fe2. My skin tone is more accurate, there's less smoothing. All in all. The s20 Fe is essentially a flagship camera setup, regardless of the specs on paper and paired, with flagship internals to go with if it's more often than not going to produce the better shot as good as the a72 appears to be.
I still think it falls just a little short in comparison. So overall, it's no secret that the s20 Fe is the better device here. Even though it's nearly a year old now it still offers better specs, better features more add-ons than the brand new a72, and that should come as no surprise we're still comparing an s-series phone and an a-series phone here. After all and there's still a lot that separates them, the biggest factor for me now really is just the price the s20 Fe can be purchased for significantly cheaper than it originally sold for and in some cases it's nearly the same price as the a72. If you consider that the s20 fee is obviously the better buy, but even if you do have to pay 50 or 100 more for the s20 Fe, I still think that's well worth it too.
