Pixel 5 vs. Galaxy S20 FE: Which $700 flagship wins? By Android Central

These are two of my favorite phones of 2020, the pixel 5 and the galaxy s20 Fe. Both phones cost 700 retail, which is relatively affordable by today's standards of high-end phones, but they still manage to offer just about everything. You'd expect from a modern flagship so be sure to subscribe, and let's talk about how these two phones compare so first off just look at these phones. They both come in really fun colors and each of them cuts unnecessary costs by using something other than glass for the back. The pixel 5 comes in sorta sage, which is actually one of my favorite finishes of the year google's using something called a bio resin on top of an aluminum frame which gives the pixel this slightly textured look and feel that I really enjoy. You can also get it in just black, as is always the case with pixel phones.

But trust me sort of sage is the color you want. As for the galaxy s20 Fe, you get a lot more colors to choose from everything from navy blue to green orange red purple. This phone's a lot bigger than the pixel, though, which may be a good or bad thing, depending on your preference, and the back is made of a high quality plastic that Samsung calls plastic despite the terrible name. The s20 Fe actually feels incredibly sturdy and well-built, there's no give in the plastic, and it's certainly less fragile than traditional glass with both phones. You get ip68 water and dust resistance, wireless charging and even reverse wireless charging, not to mention large displays with slim bezels and hole, punch, camera cutouts.

The biggest difference between the two screens is their size, but the s20 Fe also sports, a 120 hertz refresh rate beating out the pixel 5's 90 hertz. One thing I really like about the pixel 5, though, is its rear, fingerprint sensor, which you can use to instantly pull down the notification shade. The s20 FES in display fingerprint sensor is fine, but in my experience at least it's not nearly as quick or reliable, so the pixel 5 is powered by the same snapdragon 765g processor google used in the cheaper Pixel 4a 5g, it's a fine chipset and I rarely have performance complaints with the pixel 5, but it isn't nearly as powerful as the snapdragon 865 in the s20 Fe. The s20 also features expandable storage and, while both phones start at 128 gigs internally, only Samsung offers the option to double your storage up to 256 gigabytes. Of course, both phones feature 5g support for whatever that's worth in its current state and both have huge batteries.4 000 Williams on the pixel 5 and 4 500 on the s20 Fe. Either phone can make it through a full day without a problem, but I've experienced phenomenal battery life on the pixel 5.

In particular, I've never had to recharge it. Midday and I've been able to squeeze out over 9 hours of screen on time with typical use. The pixel 5 also runs on the newer android 11 operating system, which features tiered notification management, smart home and Google Pay integration in the power menu and plenty of other modern features. The pixel will always be the better choice for users that want the latest version of android as soon as it's available, but Samsung's one UI on the s20 Fe has plenty of its own perks.

I still love how one UI makes even a larger phone like the s20 Fe, fairly usable one-handed, by bringing top menu items down closer to the middle of the screen. You also get Samsung DEX, which allows you to connect the s20 Fe to a monitor and run a full desktop experience from your phone. You can even do this wirelessly with a compatible TV. It's wild. The good news is that both google and Samsung have committed to offering at least three years of software support for their phones.

That means major platform updates, like the next version of android and regular security patches until at least sometime in 2023. Now, with any high-end phones, one of the biggest differentiators is camera performance and while the pixel line has typically been revered as the best camera experience on android Samsung is really closing the gap by offering a more versatile camera system, both phones feature wide and ultra-wide lenses, but the s20fes ultrawide can fit more into the frame thanks to a 0.5 x perspective compared to the pixel 5's 0.6 x, and it also has a 3x telephoto lens, where the pixel 5 has to rely on digital zoom on its main sensor, I'm not generally the biggest fan of Samsung's image processing, which tends to over saturate and over expose most shots. But a few weeks ago I put out a camera comparison, video featuring these two phones, and I was surprised by how often I actually preferred the s20 FES shots over the pixel 5s both have fantastic cameras, and I really appreciate some of the pixel 5's new video stabilization features, but I think most people will find the s20 Fe's wider ultra-wide lens and 3x telephoto sensor a more useful overall system, so, ultimately, which phone should you buy? Well, I've been using the pixel 5 daily since I got it in for review and I absolutely love the smaller size and cleaner software battery life has been incredible, and I really like the in-hand feel, but the s20 Fe has a larger, faster display, a more powerful processor and more versatile cameras and at the time of publishing this video, it's on sale for just 550 dollars. Unless you really want a smaller phone with Google centric software, the s20 Fe is clearly the better deal, and it's the one I'd recommend to most people, even though I personally prefer the pixel 5. These are both fantastic phones, though.
