(soft music) - What's up? This is John from John Branch IV Photography. And the new iPad Pros just dropped and I got mine in the mail the other day. So what I wanted to do is do a quick comparison against the same models, first Gen versus second Gen. So, we have the 11-inch iPad Pro versus the 11-inch generation two. And if you're new to the channel, and you're just now checking this out, I'm basically a wedding photographer and I use my iPad Pro as my main laptop. I've been doing this for over a year now.
And it's been amazing when I have my main desktop to work on at home and then, take this with me when I travel. So, let's go ahead and open this thing up, see what it's about and just compare it to the old one. So, here's our old box. We're gonna get rid of this thing. It basically looks the same as the first one.
And here goes the new one. Like I said, they both look the same. Unboxing is pretty straight forward. And I don't wanna take too much time on this 'cause y'all already know. You already know.
Apple has really nice boxes and how they put it together and everything. So, here we are. Let's see what we're getting in the box. same stuff as before, my charger, my USBC, documentation and stickers, you already know that. We don't need to go over all that stuff.
And here it is, it feels exactly the same as the old one. I don't think anything on this changed at all. If anything, maybe it's a little bit boxier but I haven't used mine without a case for a while. So, there it is. Brand spanking new iPad.
There's that bump on the back. Exact same form factor. Look at my fingerprints. (laughs) And let's compare that to my old one here. I'll take this case off.
And yeah, they're pretty much the same. I mean, the only way I can really tell these apart is the fact that I have a screen protector on this one, and obviously, the camera. So, let's turn this bad boy on. And basically the big question, I'm sure a lot of you all are wondering, is if you should even upgrade if you already have the Pro. Honestly, looking at it, I don't know the spec differences, which I'm gonna dive into that with Geekbench once I get this set up.
But honestly, it's probably not that big of a difference between the two. Probably not the biggest upgrade, but I guess we'll find out. Here's our normal setup. And then they've got a Quick Start, bring your current iPhone or iPad near, Set it up. So I have my old iPad here.
Open it. It's basically like, "Yo, you wanna do that though?" And we continue in there and sign in. Scan this little thing with our camera. (laughs) These new setups are really awesome. I'm not used to this, being able to just scan it in from your old one and bring it over.
So that's really, really cool. But while we wait on that real quick, just to talk about how I use my iPad, if you haven't seen the videos, check them out up above, I have a whole bunch of videos about how I use my iPad, tips on using the iPad and using things like Lightroom, Adobe Rush, LumaFusion, and I'm going to have some full walkthroughs coming out very soon as well that I'll also link at the top and in the description once they're out. But basically, what we're going to be looking at is editing whole photo sessions, whole videos on the iPad Pro alone and that is it. So if you're into that stuff, don't forget to subscribe to the channel and we'll check out more of using your iPad as a main laptop. But I'mma be right back after I set this guy up and we'll go ahead and do a little bit of benchmarking.
All right, so we're back, I updated my new iPad, everything's on it now and I set it up, put my screen protector on it, but what's sad is it got folded up a little bit, so there are a couple of bubbles, so I'm probably just gonna have to take it off. But I talked about this in my video of different accessories for the iPad Pro. So definitely check out that video up above. You can see things like the Paperlike screen protector, which I'm using on these iPads here. But yeah, the main thing I wanted to check out is the differences in Geekbench, and also to see if the RAM is different between these iPads because I know some of them have more RAM than others so, we'll see.
These are the exact same models. So, 11-inch, old school, 256 gigs, and 11-inch, brand new, 256 gigs. So let's go ahead and hop into Geekbench. Yeah, so here is 11-inch, eight point or eight dash one. And here's the new one.
Actually, you know what? I don't even know which one's the new one anymore. Yeah, eight nine and eight one. And it looks like this one is coming with six gigs of RAM. So the new one has more RAM in it. So it's definitely gonna be faster than the old one.
Let's go ahead and get the CPU and run a quick benchmark. All right, and there are results. And honestly, they're about the same. I'm not seeing much of a difference at all. Honestly, is this the same processor? Look at this processor.
That's crazy. Mmm. So that's the big question there, should you upgrade? I don't know, they're basically the same. So if you're not on one of the newer iPad pros, go ahead and upgrade and get the new one. But for anyone who's already on an iPad Pro, I mean, there's more RAM on it.
But it's basically just a refresh. It's just a little bit of new insights and that's about it, and then, the new cameras and things. So just as a quick note, I did run a compute test real quick, just to double check, 'cause I was really surprised at how close the numbers were. And the new iPad Pro did end up coming out on top of this test. You can see it here in these results.
Now, one other thing I noticed, especially being a photographer is the white balance on these screens are a little different. You see, in the new one, that's a little bit more magenta, and maybe a tad bit warmer, whereas this all one here is very blue. And I'm curious to see if that translates to Lightroom. I don't know if my photos are loaded on this one yet. They are, look at that.
Yeah. Oh, we got crashes on the new iPad. Oh. I gotta resign back in. Great job.
(laughs) All right, we're logged back in. So, yeah, here's the same photo. You can see the white balance on the screens is very different. And obviously, that's going to be different for every screen regardless. But it's weird that there's so much more magenta on this new one versus the old iPad.
So I'm curious of how that's gonna affect my photos and editing and things. I tend to be a little heavy on the magenta side, so, actually, with photo editing, it may help me not be so heavy on magenta, but I'm not sure. Let's compare another photo I guess. Ah, let me see if I can filter this down to five stars only. So yeah, like, here's another photo.
I mean, yeah, it's very subtle, the difference, but it's way more magenta and it seems a little warmer. See, what else we got here? See what a black and white looks like. I mean, yeah, you can clearly see it on the black and white. I don't know if y'all can see it over the video, but there's a pretty drastic difference. So for photographers, that's something for you all to notice is the difference of the screens here.
And there's not a way to calibrate the screens yet, as of what I know. I know I get that question a whole lot. So keep that in mind, your screens are gonna vary. Who knows what they're gonna look like when it comes to editing. I do love editing on my iPad Pro, but it's basically when I'm away from the computer.
I always come back to Homebase and double check the photos and do all the exporting there. So y'all can check out some videos about that as well up above. So yeah, that's a quick look at the new iPad Pro. Yet again, it's basically the same thing with a new camera. And the screen is a little different, it seems like.
And it's really not that much faster. So I have confirmed that the 11-inch, at least, has more RAM. That's looking like six gigs versus the four gigs of the last model. So that's a little information for you all, just to check out the new iPad Pro. Basically, it's the same thing.
So if anyone was wondering, yeah, they're pretty much the same. If you already have an iPad Pro, you probably don't need to upgrade. If you don't have an iPad Pro yet, maybe go for the new one, since it's newer, tiny bit faster and more RAM. And that's about it. Oh, yeah, also, the pricing is better too, because of the gigabytes you're getting per size with it starting at 128.
So I hope you all enjoyed checking out the new iPad Pro with me. Yet again, there's gonna be a lot more videos on the iPad Pro, using it for editing full sessions, for editing videos, and more stuff like that. So definitely stick around on the channel, subscribe for more, and I will check you all next time. All right, peace. (giddy music).
