Google Pixel 4a 5G | Six Month Review

So, google, I or 2021 is all done and dusted and once again it was an entirely online virtual affair, with zero opportunities to get boozed up with my fellow tech, nerds big frowny faces all around, and sadly we didn't see any fresh new, pixel, 5 air or 5a 5g action at Google. I or this time around so that'll, be coming later in 2021, no doubt because it's perhaps not too surprising that there wasn't a pixel 5v 5g launched at Google, I or because after it's only been six months since the Fourier 5g was released here in the UK and suddenly the pixel 45g hasn't dropped at all in price, since launch it'll still cost you 500 a bob. I thought now would be a good time to return to it to see if it holds up well in 2021, especially as we've had a lot of budget-friendly 5g smartphones launched from the likes of Xiaomi and realm, which are about half the price. So here's, my long-term Google Pixel 485g review and for more than the latest greatest tech. Please do poke subscribe and take that notifications bell cheers so six months on, I have to admit I'm still not a massive fan of the look of this pixel blower compared with some rivals like the opp, fine, x3 Neo and the OnePlus word. It's just a bit of a snooze fest, especially as your only color choice.

Is this here black effort, you don't even get the funky two-tone finish of earlier models to jazz things up a bit, although to be fair to google at least that back end isn't quite as susceptible to damage as I originally thought it might be beyond a couple of teeny scratches the only sign of wear and tear is some shiny patches towards the bottom ends, where the phone's been constantly rubbing against my flesh. Sadly, though, that gorilla glass, 3 display, has picked up a couple of light scratches as well, so I definitely recommend slapping on a screen protector to make sure it stays pristine. And it's a shame. You don't get that IP rated water and dust resistance of the flagship smartphone as well. Although this sort of price point is a reasonably rare feature, it's also a shame that the pixel 4 a5g is more of a handful than its siblings.

The 6.2-inch screen may be positively dainty by 2021 standards, but factor in those chunky, bezels, and you will be struggling to use this blower one-handed. Now, one area where google smartphones definitely rain supreme over the rest of their android brethren, is the software support. As far as timely updates and OS upgrades go, you can't really beat a good old pixel. I've seen those security patches tick through every month, regular as clockwork, and in the past six months, Google has added some decent fare to android 11, as well just terms of general tools and features, most of which I mentioned already in my pixel 5 long term review. A lot of these updates are improvements that lurk in the background, such as the adaptive sound feature which can tweak the audio pumped out of that built-in speaker to match whatever loud and crazy or peaceful environment.

You find yourself in you've also got the excellent adaptive charging feature which can trickle charge your pixel, 4 or 5g. If you leave it plugged in overnight, ensuring that it hits 100 full capacity just before your alarm goes off in the morning to arouse you from your slumber. This is a great way of preventing the battery from overcharging and thus potentially causing long-term damage. We've seen this feature added by the likes of Sony to its android smartphones for donkeys now, so it is great to see it becoming an android staple, and you've got yourself a couple more years of guaranteed updates with this blower as well. So huzzah has a nice bit of future-proof and that's what we like.

Sadly like the pixel 5 flagships. There is no micro, SD memory card support here, so it's a good thing that you do get 128 gigs of storage as standard and thankfully pixel Fourier 5g owners will continue to enjoy free, unlimited cloud storage via Google photos for the foreseeable future. Unless google decides to change its policies once more now, I am still a fan of that 6.2-inch OLED screen as well. Even though the 60 hertz refresh rate feels like a proper Jim these days, especially as quite a few cheaper smartphones these days, the likes the OnePlus words, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 pro sport, an OLED screen with a 90 or even a 120 hertz, refresh rate and yeah zipping rounds. You know your desktops here on pixel 405 g does still feel pretty smooth thanks to the lack of a clunky launcher, sat there on top of android, but just not as smooth as some rivals that grumble aside, the pixel 4 of 5g's display is a bit bigger than its siblings.

So movies and games aren't quite as squished, which is great news if your eyesight is crap from decades of Gopinath screens self-abuse. But it's also compact enough to make those full HD plus visuals proper sharp, while the HDR support means stunning eye candy when you're streaming. Some of the latest shows on Netflix and other services and yeah that selfie orifice does seem rather gaping compared with some of its more recent rivals, but at least it is shoved away in a corner. The stereo speaker arrangement is clearly lopsided, but absolutely fine. Just for enjoying a bit of YouTube, if you don't want to plug in, but you know, while you've got it, why not take full advantage of that lovely little headphone jack up top and enjoy true lossless audio nice little piece bubble? Otherwise, I also did not get any JIT whatsoever from the Bluetooth streaming now.

One area where the pixel 4 5g definitely does look rather outdated compared with some other mid-ranges is the snapdragon 765g chipset. That runs the show, backed by six gigs of ram. Now I've had a funnel of quite a few handsets lately, the likes of the ANZUS before 8, the at accent, 30 ultra and, of course, the Poco f3, which spot a snapdragon 800 series chipset in there for about the same or less cash, and those will serve up a lot more power, especially a good bit of game and grunt. Now, if you're not into gaming, then no worries the pixel 45g is still a smooth sailor, refusing to crap out no matter how many apps you're playing with, and even if you are a gamer you'll, still get very respectable results. From this thing, even memory smashes like bench gentian impact can run at a perfectly playable frame rate on those medium settings, although you'll definitely see drops here and there, and you certainly shouldn't bump up the detail levels unless you want to turn your hackathon into a full-on slideshow and yeah.

There's no Wi-Fi stick support on this thing, which is again something that's quite standard on a lot of mid-ranges, especially around this price point of these stairs, although at least you do have that 5g future-proofing and thankfully, unlike the pixel 5 flagship smartphones, the Fourier 5g doesn't heat up like a more for once. You stick it in the sun, probably thanks to the plastic design on this thing, so at least you don't have to worry about roasted nuts when you pocket this pixel and one area where the pixel Fourier 5g seems to have actually improved over time. Besides, the software, of course, is the battery life. I used a fairly busy deer with around 15 to 20 percent charge remaining, which is a perfectly respectable result. Of course, the main thing is just making it through a day, but I found that these days, even with plenty of screens on time, around sort of five nourish good bit of audio streaming in the background occasional bit of camera use and all that good stuff, I still managed to end most days with around 25 to 30 charge remaining and yeah these days.

The 18 watt fast charge support is looking about as nippy as an asthmatic sloth, but at least you can just stick it in to charge overnight. You've got those smart charging features you're not going to book the battery touch wood, but anyhow, as always, I've saved the best for last and the main reason for grabbing a pixel smartphone in 2021. Besides, of course, the grid software and guaranteed update is the fact that you've got the hot camera tech on there. It is quite a restrained hardware setup with just two main lenses on offer: a 12.2 megapixel, dual pixel camera sensor with optical image, stabilization set alongside a 16 megapixel ultra-wide angle lens. Yes, that is the same hardware setup as what you'll get with the pixel 5 flagships.

Smartphone, which is great to see, and it's one aspect of the pixel 485g that hasn't really changed up at all in the previous six months, mostly because google just absolutely bloody nailed it first time. Even now, it is still one of the best camera smartphones in 2021, like with a flagship pixel. It doesn't really matter what you're snapping pics of where you're doing it or what time of day it is. This phone will capture a natural looking photo with bug overall effort where bright backgrounds and skies are involved. The dual brightness controls ensure that your subject stays highlighted and no part of that picture is blown out indoors.

My photos were rarely tainted with green or warm colors again appearing impressively close to what you'll see with the naked eye and at night. You've got that bonus mode which again serves up realistic, colors and bright, well-balanced picks, no worries if you're the exhausted owner of small humans or animals either because the pixel 45g can handle erratic movement no worries, while the portrait mode is still among the very best and the pixel 45g's ultra-wide angle. Shooter also offers a pulled back view without really compromising on the image quality and yes, like with the other pixel smartphones. The pixel 45g doesn't offer a pro mode and there's very little in the way of bonus, camera mode slapped on here as well. Google is definitely very much focused on point and shoot keeping it as simple as possible.

As for your horror movies, you can shoot up to 4k resolution footage at 30 or 60 frames per second, and while some rivals, like Samsung's flagship smartphones, offer lots of tools and toggles. The 485g is once again all about point and shoot simplicity with the same fine detail and natural color capture, no problems with the audio side, either it's all gravy and then the 8-megapixel selfie camera does feel like a bit of an afterthought compared with the brilliant rear cam, although it's still absolutely fine for shareable shots of you, pretending that your life is awesome, and you're still clinging onto those last shreds of sanity. After countless lockdowns, many rivals do produce sharper snaps, but those portrait smarts are once again a winner. Sorry there's my re-review of the Pixel 4a 5g. Returning to it, six months after it released here in the UK- and I have to say it is still rather pricey, unfortunately considering some of the features you're missing out on like a display with a fast refresh rate, micro, SD memory card support and, of course, gamers should definitely look elsewhere.

So yeah there is a lot of compromise with the pixel 4 or 5g compared with some of the competition I do wish it would drop in price. Just a 100 200 pounds similar to what the Nokia 8.3 did to make it a bit more appetizing. But you know what it's still one of the best camera smartphones out there. So if that's your priority, then fantastic. The battery life is great and of course, you've got those regular software updates, and it really is a slick software experience.

So, that's why I think I've now re-reviewed all the pixel smartphones, the Fourier, the 485g and the pixel of five, so go check out the other ones if you're still tempted I've compared all three of them side by side as well and if you've been using the pixel 45g it'd be great to hear from you down in the comments below as well.
