Can You Trust BlackBerry? By TechOdyssey

Hey everybody welcome back to tech odyssey, so today, I'm here to talk about blackberry again, but I have a very particular topic of conversation that I want to talk about, and that is canned we still trust blackberry, and you would think that the company that has prided itself on managing our security, the company that has built its reputation on trust and reliability? Can we trust them and I think that's an important question asked moving forward because we've had a lot of failures in the trustworthiness department? Look at the blackberry playbook, it never got. Blackberry 10 like it was promised. Look at blackberry, messenger gone, it's blackberry, messenger. You know BME now, and it got sold off to another company to manage. You also look at what happened with blackberry 10. It's going to reach end of life at the beginning of 2022.

They gave up on making android phones, I mean they scrapped the handset division completely and licensed it out, and then that licensing agreement fell apart and then, even when we did have that licensing agreement, we weren't getting reliable security updates. We never got android 9. So, there's not exactly a perfect track record here, and I want to talk about the trustworthiness of the brand moving forward and whether we can rely on it or not, and what we what they could do to reinstall that confidence, but before we get into all that, I do want to say if this is your first time stopping by the channel. If you want updates when new videos come out, let's talk about these guys all right. So prime example, here blackberry leap, one of the very last blackberry 10 devices. It has done left, and it's basically you know, can't really use it a lot anymore. It's running blackberry, 10, but going back a long time. Furthermore, it took them forever just to get blackberry 10 on the scene.

They scrapped everything they retooled it, and they brought it out as blackberry 10, but it was actually supposed to come out like a year prior to that year and a half. Actually, we were waiting forever for that and then the blackberry playbook. We got that that was supposed to get blackberry 10. They scrapped that blackberry 10 gave up on it androids they gave up on that too. Blackberry we're not going to make phones any more well when they got away from that.

They started entering in question marks about the reliability of the security, the route of trust, all those important things that governments and people around the world relied on whenever it came to blackberry. Yes, they're doing the internet of things now they're doing car security, all that great stuff, but what we, the people, probably watching this video and following my channel, are concerned about are phones, so when I say, can we trust blackberry? That means. Can we trust the phones? Can we trust the phone's security? Can we trust that they're going to deliver on their promise to be the most secure phone in the world? Can we trust that when the phone comes out that it's actually going to get supported and updated properly, you know all of those important things that we want to know before we go out and invest money in this phone? That's supposed to be on the horizon. That's not here yet so, just using the blackberry, mobile licensing agreement as a prime example- and you know I don't want to poke holes in onward mobility before they even get a chance to prove their worth, because we still don't have the phone when the phone gets. Here, it's going to be subject to a lot of scrutiny from you for me from a lot of people.

First, the quality assurance. Hopefully it's going to be better than TCL and blackberry mobile. Hopefully the screens won't fall out. Hopefully the space bars will still work. Hopefully the batteries won't fail.

Hopefully there's a lot of different things. In there we had a lot of issues with the blackberry mobile devices. So will the quality of the hardware hold up? Will it be a well-made device? I think they're going a long way by bringing in phi, h and Foxconn to build this they've got a great reputation, but that's still something that's going to have to stand the test of time. It can't be falling apart when we first get it so structural integrity, physicality and how well-built the phone is, is really important. But the second thing is: they even said this: they want this to be the most secure phone in the world.

Well, a lot of blackberry fans still believe that blackberry 10 is the most secure operating system in the world. It's not just your security on your phone, but how your data is managed, how it passes through how it's how it gets, handled and transferred outside your device. Is there like secure communications on both ends? You know a closed end security loop. All sorts of different things that make your phone secure inside and out is that something they're going to be able to deliver on, and I think that's really important, because before whenever you picked up a blackberry, there was no question. In your mind.

It was unlockable. It was unreadable. Furthermore, it was on all laundry lists of things that told you that you knew if you were buying blackberry. You were buying security. Your phone was secure, you were secure, your data was secure, so is that something that onward mobility working together with blackberry going to be able to provide for us, and is it enough to just say that, yes, it was great hearing those words.

We want this to be the most secure phone in the world. That's a very auspicious goal. I think that it's very fair to say is this something that can be accomplished. Is it something that can be accomplished in the android world and looking at the android world? Is the most secure android phone in the world on par with what we used to consider the most secure phone in blackberry? There was a lot of security that went into these phones. It wasn't just the software, it wasn't just the hardware, it wasn't just the data, it was a trifecta of all those different things, certifications, compliance and assurances that your phone was going to be secure, so will onward mobility be able to deliver the blackberry, 10 level of security in a new android phone.

I think that's important, but I also think it's important for them to be able to demonstrate that on day one they need to be able to say. This is why your phone is the most secure phone in the world. This is how we're keeping it secure, and this is how we're going to keep it secure in the future. Now there are two components to keeping it secure in the future. One of them is just delivering on your promises and delivering on your promises is something that blackberry has a terrible history of doing.

Uh you keep going back and buying all these promises. The promises just are not kept. So when you've had so many promises that don't hold up, then what does it mean whenever you know the guy third down the line? This is the second licensing agreement. We're talking about when we're as far removed from the original blackberry as we are now, how much weight does that carry when they say XYZ, so we're going to need a guarantee for how long it's going to be supported, and it can't be two years. It's going to have to be at least three years if they don't come out of the box and say at least three years of security and software updates, I'm going to be very skeptical of that one because of the longevity of it I mean.

Will the brand be around that long? I mean, if you look at the blackberry, mobile licensing agreement. How much are they really active? Nowadays, I mean they weren't, all that great with security patches and updates for the blackberry key series devices, the key one, the key2 key2le and the motion. Those didn't get a lot of updates. They did not always get monthly security patches, and now it is nice that the 100-2 key2 model is still getting security patches, but none of the other ones are so there needs to be consistency. There needs to be global security, patches and updates that are pushed out to everyone.

This isn't one of those things where it's like. Well, yours are secure, but yours aren't secure. Well, yours is running the July security patch, but yours has a December security patch. Yours has software build ABC, and yours has software build CDE? There needs to be consistency. There needs to be a global push out if this is even possible.

Of course, if they're working with carriers, of course that's going to funnel things up, but they need to be able to on day one have assurances that it will be supported for so long and that you will get security patches and security updates for, however long and in the event that the licensing agreement ends, there needs to be assurances in there that we will get security patches, but this isn't one of those things where it's like. Okay, we made the phone and I hope it sells like hotcakes, like nobody in the world more than me hopes that they sell like 50 million phones, but if they come out and sell like 40, 000 phones and then decide okay. Well, we're not going to make any more phones, and you promise us from the get go that this was going to be the most secure phone in the world. There needs to be assurances, commitments, backing and a plan to make sure that these phones stay secure moving forward, because we don't want more devices that are dead. We want devices that we can use for years.

So if you can't buy into the security, if you can't bind the reliability, you can't buy into the reputation and there's nothing there. Then how blackberry really is it? And this is a lot of like philosophical level stuff but yeah. I like the key one. I like the key too. Furthermore, I like the key2le, but it's very frustrating not even two years after they come out.

They didn't get software updates, they didn't get security patches and then at that point, you're just using a keyboard and if you just want a phone that has a keyboard. Well, you can get that and Uniper's titan. You can get that in the upcoming uni hertz titan pocket. You know there are a lot of different ways: well, not a lot, but there are a few ways you can get a keyboard experience heck if I'm not going to get updates. I can just keep using this because this hasn't been updated since april 2019 in my key one so yeah I don't want to make this video to try and undercut what their operations are.

What they're trying to do. The whole point of this is to address some issues that are very, very important: it's not just about making a flagship level phone, it's not just bringing us an android phone with 5g and a keyboard. We can, we've got keyboard, phones, we've got them, we've got the blackberry mobile ones. So, yes, it would be really nice to get all the modern, updated stuff, but we rely on blackberry not just because of the keyboard, but because of the security and the reputation and the trust in the phone. So black, bearing and on mobility, need to work together to provide assurances.

They need to provide a plan, and they need to provide a timeline for how long the devices are going to be supported. To give us the guarantees that we need to believe that the brand is still secure and also demonstrate how they can secure it. I get these questions all the time and yes, blackberry, 10 is not really relevant anymore. So whenever you look at that and say well, it's secure well yeah, I mean there's, probably not a lot of people trying to hack it. I mean just quite honestly, but when you look at the other things in android, you look at the titan chip with pixel.

You look at Samsung Knox security. You look at the detect software, they use with blackberry and blackberry mobile. What is the plan when this device comes out to say this is how we're going to secure it? This is why it's secure. This is how secure it is, and this is how we're going to maintain that, because, yes, it's not just a keyboard phone, it's a blackberry and a blackberry is not a blackberry if just because it has a keyboard, a blackberry is a blackberry because of security because of the brand reputation because of the reliability, the trust and the physical keyboard, and, of course, yes, they can make ones without physical keyboards. I just made a video praising how much I love the blackberry elite.

There were some really great all-touch screen devices and if onward mobility and their device roadmap down the road says, hey we're going to make an all-touch screen device, I'm going to be here for it 100, because blackberries can be a blackberry without having a physical keyboard, and they've proven it they've done it well, and they can do it again. So that's all I've got in this video, just kind of some thought-provoking stuff, some things I was thinking about some things that need to be addressed. Moving forward whenever the new device gets here. We need to have some confidence and assurance that this is something that they're able to do and believe it moving forward, because not only do we want a physical keyboard, not only do we want a blackberry with the blackberry logo on the back, but we want the blackberry on the inside too to guarantee and provide security for us and our data, and I think they can do it. I don't think it's too auspicious of a goal.

I think that if blackberry entered into this licensing agreement with them, then they felt confident in almost ability's ability to make a secure blackberry device, because when you give them a licensing agreement, that's like saying go forth and prosper with my name, because I trust that you can do it, and they wouldn't have given this to them. If they didn't think that they could do it if they didn't think they could pull it off so once the phone gets here. I think that they'll probably have some way to demonstrate all these things that I've talked about in this video, and I think that that will give us reliability and security in the brand and also in the pathway moving forward with the devices. So that's all I've got kind of a lot of high level stuff there, but some important things I wanted to talk about that. I've been thinking about with regard to the platform and android and the phone moving forward, because there's people that you're going to have to convince moving over this.

There are people that are perfectly happy with their PRI they're people that are perfectly happy with their blackberry, 10 devices just being able to text and make phone calls. There are people that are perfectly happy with their blackberry, key series devices or something else they may have moved on to already maybe they're using a Samsung, maybe they're, using a pixel. There are a lot of other fish in the sea whenever it comes to phones nowadays, so it has to be compelling not only for current fans but also people who used to use blackberry and want to come back for more than just a physical keyboard. They want to buy in to the blackberry, brand experience, trust and the comprehensive solution for you and your data. So that's all I've got any questions or comments, or course thoughts.
