2020 IPAD AIR - What is Apple Doing!?

Hey everyone- this is urge josh and welcome to my YouTube channel earlier this week, apple released the new iPad Air and at first I was like all right. You know this is completely worthless for us digital artists, I'm going to tell everyone not to buy it, but after giving it some thought, I realize it's not that easy of a decision to make. If you've already heard about this and know all the tech specs, you can go ahead and skip to this point. Where I get into why um, I think it's worth buying or not, but if you haven't heard about it already, I'm just going to quickly go over the top highlights of what's changed so that, hopefully you can make a more informed decision. If you want to buy this iPad or not. So there are about four main things that have changed with this iPad and the first one is.

The design apple has basically taken the 2018 iPad Pro design, along with the 2020 one, because they're the same and brought it to the iPad Air. It's got that boxy rounded edge design that allows you to put your Apple Pencil on the side so that you can charge it. The only main difference here is going to be the 60hz refresh rate versus the 120hz refresh rate. The pro motion display that the iPad pros have so. The second thing is going to be the new USB port that allows you to have faster filed, transfers and connect with external USB devices, and you know it's great it's something that we had on the iPad Pro it's now down to the air.

Now. The third big change here is actually pretty cool. They added a fingerprint sensor to the power button of the iPad Air. This iPad does not have face recognition, but honestly, I would trade that for the fingerprint sensor on the actual power button for my iPad Pro now, the last big change is probably the most significant one which makes this quite a compelling choice, which is the introduction of the new a14 bionic chip. This chip is supposedly 40 faster than before and 30 faster when it comes to graphics.

Honestly, the only things that this iPad Air doesn't have that we know of at least is the multi-camera array on the back. Compared to this you know the iPad Air is just single camera and the LIDAR sensor on the back. It also doesn't have face recognition. Like I mentioned earlier, the main issue I have with this that makes me hesitant to recommend it for digital artists is the price to performance. So if you look at the iPad model, the generic one they've released in 8th gen, that's the same great price, 330 dollars, I believe, and that one is 400 less than the model that I recommend you spec this iPad for which comes in at 750 bucks.

The other reason that it makes it hard for me to recommend this is that it comes at only two storage capacities and that's 64 gigs and 256 gigs. In my opinion, 64 is just too small and too risky to get if you're, especially wanting to use this for more than just art and the 256 is almost overkill, because even for me, I still rarely get too far over half that amount. So for this reason, when I'm looking at prices, I'm just going to completely ignore the 64 gig version and look at the 256 gig version which comes in at 750 bucks. Now the thing is: if we look at the iPad Pro 11 inches, which is just 0.1 inches, bigger right, it comes in at 799 or 800 bucks. So that's really just 50 more and that's for the 128 gig version, which I say is pretty much the same, because that's a nice basic limit that you want for your storage and I don't think many people need more than that at all.

So we have the iPad Air, which comes in at 750 bucks for the 256 gigabyte version, and we have the 11-inch iPad Pro for 128 gigs that comes in at 50, more 800 bucks, it's a little. It makes you think right, oh obviously get the pro right, but still it depends on exactly what you're doing so. The pros that the pro has is that it has that 120 hertz refresh rate, which is actually pretty nice for anyone to use, especially as artists. The other thing is that the 11-inch pro has 6 gigs of ram, which is confirmed to be true, but on this iPad Air we don't know how much ram it has and there's really no reason to believe it has as much because it's the pro line they put more there. So it's very likely we're gonna, see four gigabytes or fewer ram on the air.

Now, in my opinion, ram matters more than processing power for these tablets because it directly converts to how many layers you can use in all of these drawing and painting applications. So the iPad Pro has more ram. Supposedly that's what I'm going to assume and the iPad Pro also has a better refresh rate screen. But the iPad Air has that a14 bionics chip that chip is supposedly 40 faster and then 30 faster when it comes to graphics, which can help when it comes to art, because that's going to allow you to use I'm assuming bigger brushes rather than smaller brushes before it gets too laggy on a canvas ram. I'm pretty sure it doesn't really affect that.

It's more for the layers. But, to be honest, I don't think too many people are using gigantic complex brushes and software developers who are making programs for us on the iPad for them to be able to take advantage of that. New processing power would be in a complete rewrite of the code, and I really don't think that's going to happen much. So I think the only thing you're going to see improvement wise when it comes to painting is being able to use bigger brushes on a canvas which, again, I don't think it's going to be that compelling. But if you use your iPad for if you're intending to use this for a laptop replacement, for example, that's where that can kind of matter, because everything across the board is generally going to be faster and more future-proof.

And if you want to do some video editing, that's going to come in handy a lot. To be honest, it's a really, really weird product because it seems to almost replace the 11-inch iPad Pro with something. That's completely better. I mean again, if it wasn't for that pro motion that 120 hertz, I wouldn't care. I don't really care about having this incredible camera display and the LIDAR sensor on the back.

So for me, it's like I'd, and I'd much rather give away that uh face recognition, software, because I love the fingerprint reader. If you don't care about the 12.9 in size honestly, this is a better choice than the 11-inch iPad Pro. In many ways the only caveat is again that six gigs of ram we know to be true and exist on the iPad. Pro line is going to matter for a lot of digital artists, whereas we don't know exactly what's going to be for this new iPad Air, because we no one's really going to get until October and when it comes to just generic value and resale ability they both came out this year in 2020. I feel like they're, both going to be pretty much on par.

If you get the new 2020 iPad Pro line or the iPad airline they're pretty much going to be the same. But if you want that faster processor, that's definitely going to be where you should go for the iPad Air. So if you compare the prices and make sure to add the Apple Pencil, because that thing is still a whopping 130 dollars, you're looking at 880 bucks for the 256 gigabyte model of the iPad Air, and you're, also looking at about 930 bucks for the 11-inch iPad Pro model that has 128 gigs, so you're, looking at really a difference of only 50 bucks for each model, which is pretty insignificant when you're spending 900 plus dollars almost a grand on these devices, so yeah. This is a really, really weird product setup. That apple has done.

I think that they might just be trying to get everyone into their higher end models, or maybe that they're just really trying to fight that laptop market and get people to go to iPads unless they're going to go need something much more powerful. So, at the end of the day, I say this really depends on you. Do you want something that has more raw power? Are you going to be using it for a lot more than just drawing and art, or do you really just plan to use this iPad for art, and you're? Not going to be doing it for school work or rendering, and things like that, and in that case I recommend you just get the pro, which is going to be a little bigger. It has way more established accessories out there you're going to benefit from that promotion display, and it's gonna probably still be a little easier of a resale value, because it has that pro name attached to it. Now, if I've convinced you to get the 11-inch iPad Pro, or maybe you still want to decide to get the iPad Air, you should definitely check out today's sponsor paperlike is a matte screen protector that allows you to apply a thin film over your iPad.

That gives it an anti-glare display. What it also does is give you the ability to have a paper-like feel when you're drawing on it with your Apple Pencil. This completely transforms the experience. In my opinion, it's way too slippery without a screen protector, and I found that it makes it super easy to transition from traditional art to digital, especially since you're already going to be looking at the surface that you're drawing on. So make sure you check out their link in the description box below or the pinned comment.

So with all that said, are you interested in a new iPad? Are you going to take a look at the iPad Air, or are you going to actually take a closer look now at the 11 iPad Pro, which is still on sale? They're not going to remove it at all, because these are two different separate lines of iPads, or maybe you're going to be checking out the iPad 8th gen, which is even faster than it was before, and it's actually interested to see how that competes with the new iPad Pro line again, because they just keep making that low and better and better and better for the same price. But for me, I'm definitely not going to be getting this iPad to test out or for review, because it's just the same thing as the 11-inch iPad Pro for me and I feel like it's just going to be faster. You know just a little of a spec bump. I really hope that it does have six gigs of ram, but if it has less, then that's definitely going to be something that can change people's minds, especially when it comes to digital art. One thing I do want to start comparing my iPad to is, however, the new Galaxy Tab.

S7 plus that thing looks pretty dang promising, and so I definitely want to get my hands on it, so I can test it out and compare it with my iPad Pro so make sure you subscribe, so that you don't miss when I get my hands on that. Alright, that's going to be it for me today make sure you guys stay safe, keep drawing and stay positive, and I will see you in the next video peace.
