Galaxy Z Fold 3 Better Than Expected Foldable phones, while cool to look at, are still very much a niche product in the wider context of the phone market. They’re also still way too expensive as well. But Samsung is apparently looking to change that with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Z Flip 3 as we have new updated prices that paint a pretty good picture. But before that let's talk about the thing that Samsung did with the Z Fold 3 that's really impressive. You see one of the issues people have with the Z Fold 2 is that it doesn't have any sort of protection against water. But that's not going to be the case with the Z Fold 3.
We heard in the past that Z Fold 3 will get some sort of IP rating for water protection and since foldables have moving parts, many expected it could be IP54 for protection against water splashes. But that's not the case. Samsung has managed to offer an impressive IPX8 rating for both the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3. Now, you might wonder, we know IP67, IP68 what the hell is IPX8. Well, let me explain the IP code basics.
IP stands for ingress protection and the first number in the IP rating signifies a product’s level of protection against the entrance of solid foreign objects. The second digit in an IP code indicates moisture protection. For example, IP68 in most of the normal flagships means the handset is fully dust-tight and Can be submerged up to 1 meter in water for 30 minutes. Now in the Z Fold 3, X means the product has not been tested in that category. It does not equate to a ranking of 0, but it does not guarantee any protection.
Now, this is understandable, given the moving parts in the hinge. Samsung had developed a brush-like mechanism that removes dust particles from the hinge of its foldable phones but still, that's not enough to guarantee a dustproof rating. So that means the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 can be submerged up to 1 meter in water for 30 minutes similar to the Galaxy S21 Ultra which quite honestly is impressive. Water-resistance is almost a crucial feature to most smartphones at this point and glad to see Samsung offering the same with their new foldables. With that said, thanks to a European retailer lambdatek, we now have pricing info of all the products Samsung is going to launch at the Unpacked Event.
Of course, these are leaked prices and could be slightly or even largely inaccurate. But it's the best info we have on the prices so far. Also, note that Samsung usually keeps a 1:1 convertion ratio between a Euro and USD so in the US it should cost around the same. So the Z Fold 3 will start at 1676 Euros for the 256GB variant while the 512GB will be priced at 1781 Euros. Z Flip 3 will start at 977 Euros for the 128GB variant and 1028 Euro for 256.
The buds 2 will be priced at 150 Euros and here are the prices for the Watch 4 and watch 4 classic. One thing to note is that Samsung tends to round off its prices to a nice, clean number, so we could expect the final price tags to get nudged to the nearest 50 or 100 denomination. So with that in mind, it's totally possible the Z Flip 3 will start at $999 and Z Fold 3 at $1699. Plus these are the freebies that Samsung will give to their Korean customers which include the Galaxy Buds 2, a one-year Samsung Care+ plan, and an S Pen case.
