What's going on guys, my name is wade with tech daily and in this video we're going to be comparing the new TCL 10 pro to the Samsung Galaxy a71. Now both of these phones are big mid-range devices with a lot of features and decent specs for not a lot of money when compared to the thousand dollar flagships on the market. Right now, I think we all already know how good of a device the a71 is and how popular it's become this year, the TCL 10 pro is sort of new to the game, but I think it has some potential in this super competitive space, and I know for a lot of folks thinking about a new phone. The 10 pro is something that likely popped up on the radar. So in this video we're going to go over all the similarities and differences between these two phones and hopefully, by the end, you can decide if either phone is right for you there's obviously a lot to talk about, and actually this is a pretty highly requested. Video too from you guys.
So I won't waste any more time. Let's go ahead and see what these two phones have to offer. First things: first, let's talk about pricing and availability. The TCL 10 pro launched just a couple of weeks ago and its retail price right now is 449 from TCL's website and from places like Amazon, it's a GSM, unlocked device, and at least right now this phone isn't offered through any carriers or networks. The price you see is the price you pay, no matter where you get it from the a71 has been out for a couple of months now and in that time, not only has it come down in price just in general, but it's slowly becoming available through different wireless carriers unlocked on Amazon, this phone retails for around 359 bucks right now and later this summer it should launch on a few networks here in the U.
S. , so you might be able to snag a deal later on either way. You look at it, though you're likely going to pay some 90 or so dollars more for the 10 pro at least and at these prices. That difference is certainly something to consider and by the way, if you guys are interested in doing some comparison, shopping of your own or maybe want to buy one of these devices. For yourself, I will have some links down below in the video description to where you can get these phones at their cheapest.
Current prices so be sure to check down there. So you don't miss out on any good deals physically. Unlike a lot of other phones, I've compared in the past, these two devices are actually pretty different. All the way around the TCL 10 pro is a 6.47 inch device, while the a71 is a bit bigger, 6.7 inch phone in the hand, the 10 pro is fairly comfortable, both just because of its size and a few other reasons which I'll talk about in a second. The a71, on the other hand, feels like a big device, and if you like, big phones, this is one of the largest you can get.
But I know it's not something that works for everyone across the top. The 10 pro has a teardrop camera notch, while the a71 has a more modern hole. Punch cutout, though, since the notch on the 10 pro is so small. I don't really think it's a huge deal and the designs are really just a matter of personal preference across the bottom. Both phones have a tiny bit of a chin, but in general, there's not a lot in the form of bezels.
Here on either phone you get slightly thicker borders on the a71, which you can probably tell, and that contributes to its larger feel. I think that's something you can tell pretty easily, but another thing here is that the tcl10 pro offers a curved front display with sloping glass along the edges. Not only does that sort of help in hiding the bezels, but it also makes the phone feel slightly less bulky in the hand and honestly, this is the design choice. I really like the flat screen and more squared off edges on the a71 make the phone feel a little chunkier in the hand which, like I alluded to earlier, is sort of why this phone seems bigger than it really is. I think the contoured shape both the front glass and rear panel on the 10 pro just give the phone a nicer, more premium, look and a slightly more comfortable feel.
Overall. However, I do know that not everyone likes the curved displays from accidentally touching something on the screen to seeing a slightly distorted keyboard on the edges. Some folks have sworn off the curved glass now entirely, since we don't really see it on even flagship devices anymore, but, like I said I like it, and I don't really have any problems with it in regard to the rest of the design and materials. The TCL 10 pro is a bit more premium with an all metal frame, while the a71 has both a plastic frame and rear panel in the hand, once again, the 10 pro just feels more premium, it's a little heavier and more dense. I think that sort of faux metal, sheen and gradient color across the back is unique and all this isn't to say that the a71 looks or feels cheap, the chrome sides and imitation glass back is super nice.
The subtle design is interesting too, and overall, at a glance, it does look like a good phone, but, just objectively speaking, the tcl10 pro is constructed from more premium materials overall, taking a look around at everything else. On the left side, the a71 has its SD and sim card tray, while the tcl10 pro has a fully customizable hotkey for Google Assistant and launching some other apps as well on the right. Both phones have the power and volume buttons there up top. The 10 pro offers its headphone jack, as well as an IR blaster, which is sort of an interesting addition and down at the bottom, is where you'll see the a71's headphone jack, the 10 pros, SD and sim card tray, and both phones, USB c charging, ports and single speaker across the back. Of course, both phones have an impressive array of cameras which I'll go more in depth with in just a bit, but one other hardware feature I do want to just mention is the fingerprint sensor.
Both phones offer an in-display fingerprint reader for unlocking and in my time using the phones. I found that they were pretty close in speed and consistency, or I guess I should say inconsistency. They both miss the mark from time to time, and I don't personally feel like one phone does any better of a job than the other with a fingerprint. Both phones also offer face unlock as an additional option, which is great, and in this case, strictly due to the limited animation the TCL 10 pro feels like it gets me to the lock screen. Just a tiny bit faster, but in general, face unlock is solid on both phones for what it is, and I personally prefer to use that when it comes to unlocking in regard to the displays, I actually think both of these phones have some of the best viewing experiences on the market for the price.
The TCL 10 pros. Nearly six and a half inch screen is a 2340 by 1080 resolution, AMOLED panel, with a pixel density of around 398 pixels per inch. The a71's massive 6.7-inch screen is Samsung's super AMOLED plus panel, that comes in at a 2400 by 1080 resolution and packs in some 393 pixels per inch. AMOLED is the way to go in my opinion, especially under 450 bucks for each of these phones. These devices offer crisp colorful viewing experiences that I think, would impress a vast majority of people and side by side.
I don't really think there's that much of a difference here, if at all, if you aren't familiar TCL, is most known for their affordable, 4k TVs and this screen technology sort of stems from that. Obviously, Samsung has been one of the best in the business as far as screens for years now, and what we end up here really are just two devices that offer incredible pictures for a super, affordable price. Now there is something I want to talk about. Both phones offer some customizability when it comes to the viewing experience on Samsung phones, you can change up the saturation and screen temperature, which isn't anything new, but with TCL they offer their next vision, engine, which is their way of sort of boosting the saturation and color for certain content. It's their kind of branded standout display feature, I guess you could say, and after using this phone for a bit, it's something I've come to like, though the over saturation, I know isn't for everyone.
You can obviously mess around with the settings and setup on both phones to get the right display. Look that you enjoy, but all in all honestly, I do think these are some of the best screens in general that you can get at these price points for the out loud. Listening experience, that's kind of a different story. Both phones offer a single downward facing speaker at the bottom, and that's it. No dual speakers, no stereo sound and here's a sample of each phone, so you can get an idea of what we're working with in general.
I actually do think the TCL sounds a bit better. It's less tinny and less muffled at a higher volume, but both phones really are just missing out on that great stereo sound some other devices offer, which is a shame. It's probably the one single missing feature on both phones that I would really have liked to see inside. Both of these phones offer slightly different specs, and if performance is maybe the thing you consider the most, you might be surprised by the results. First off with the batteries, both phones actually pack, a 4, 500 William battery inside the capacity is totally fine.
Neither phone offers any sort of wireless charging, but when it comes to the wired charging speeds, the tcl10 pro offers the 18 watt quick charge 3.0 standard, while the a71 can charge at Samsung's superfast, 25 watt standard. So the a71 has a bit of an advantage there in juicing up quicker powering the TCL 10 pro is the Qualcomm snapdragon 675 chipsets paired with the arena 612 GPU, six gigabytes of ram and 128 gigabytes of built-in UFS 2.1 storage. With the a71 you get the snapdragon 730 chipsets paired with the arena 618 GPU, six gigabytes of ram, as well with the option to go eight gigs. If you want to pay the extra money and 128 gigs of UFS 2.1 storage as well. Here are the benchmark scores.
So you can sort of get a numerical value on geek bench 5, the TCL 10 pro scored 502 for the single core and 1622 for the multi-core, and the a71 was slightly better at 544 and 1755. Through an tutu. Once again, the TCL 10 pro fell a little short with a combined score of 221 987 versus 264 1555 on the a71. Now, with the side by side, speed test, there's a couple of things. I want to mention first off both phones, ship with android 10, though they obviously run slightly different android skins based on their respective manufacturers, with TCL, offering their own take and Samsung having their one UI too.
Now in general, and this may come as a bit of a surprise, but I think I actually prefer TCL's android to experience a little better than Samsung's, at least if we're talking right out of the box, TCL's UI adjustments, pre-loaded apps and feature sets seems to be a bit more polished and purposeful, and it feels as though TCL took the extra time to better optimize. The overall experience now, that's not to say, there's anything wrong with the a71. Obviously, it's still a great phone and Samsung's one UI 2 is solid, but I just think if we're talking side-by-side preference, the TCL is what I like more now. You can probably see that the a71 was more often the quicker device with app launches and load times, but not by too much just a fraction of a second or so, and I don't really consider that a huge deal. But there is one big point to make here: you are objectively getting better specs on the a71 with that slightly newer, processor and potential for more ram.
If you want to upgrade and with that you're likely going to be paying less money, it's not a significant difference in performance or speed, but it's still a difference and the price discrepancy is big enough to where you might want to reconsider the TCL. On that point alone, I do think TCL missed out on offering this phone something better or perhaps bumping the price down to 399 or even 349. With that being said, though, when we jump to gaming, both phones perform quite well and launch and load times once again are super close. Having six gigs of ram in both phones is certainly enough for anyone, but, like I said when strictly looking at the price you pay for the components you get with each phone, the a71 is just gonna, be the better value. Finally, when it comes to the cameras, both of these phones offer a bunch of different lenses around back and for mid-range devices.
Both TCL and Samsung have some solid specs. The 10 pro packs, a 64, megapixel, f, 1.8, aperture main lens, a 16 megapixel ultra-wide lens 5, megapixel macro lens and a 2 megapixel depth sensor. The a71 actually has a pretty similar setup, a 64, megapixel, f, 1.8 main lens, a 12 megapixel ultra-wide 5 megapixel macro and a 5 megapixel depth sensor. When it comes to the software and shooting modes, both phones pack, a ton of options, you've got pro shooting controls, night mode macro, slo-mo panorama, 4k video, recording, enhanced video stabilization and a bunch more on both phones. Neither phone is really missing anything, but I will say I think some settings like the 64 megapixel high pixel shooting mode is more obvious and easy to find on the TCL versus the a71, which in the end, might lead people to actually utilize everything.
The camera has to offer the a71's camera UI, I felt, like unintentionally, hid some important settings and options, but overall both of these phones just pack so much for the price, and I think they're both really solid camera setups up front for the selfie cameras. This is where things get a little unfair. Actually, the tcl10 pro offers a decent 24, megapixel, f 2.0 selfie lens, while the a71 has a bit better 32, megapixel, f, 2.2 shooter. They both max out at 1080p video recording, but in taking a couple sample shots here. There are a few things I want to point out.
First off the a71's standard selfies still tend to beautify me with softer skin tones and a smoother finish, while the 10 pro is a bit more real, and I actually think both phones did okay with skin tone. But I do like the TCL's look a little better with a portrait shot. However, there's one big thing: that's different details, even just from viewing it on the phones. Here you can probably tell how much more detail there is on the a71 with my beard, for example, the TCL just can't really compete and that I believe, stems from the less capable selfie camera so with the a71. In this case, I think there's just a bit more potential with your selfies.
So here are my final thoughts. I, like the 10 pro. I think it's a good phone for what it is, but with all that being said, it has really just one advantage to the a71 a nicer, more premium design and build and that's kind of it. The a71 has a bigger screen, it packs in a more powerful processor, and it's quite a bit cheaper, which is probably the one thing. I just can't look past between these two phones.
The a71 is the better deal overall, but I don't think you should dismiss the TCL 10 pro entirely picking this phone up for 50 cheaper a few months from now would make it a great deal. So there you go. That's everything you need to know about the TCL 10 pro and the Samsung Galaxy a71. What do you guys think? Which phone did you prefer?
