What we have got here is a new contender, something innovative something exciting something different a $399 device that I think will blow you away. This is the red magic. It is a bold, distinguished, an exciting handset and one that challenges the notion. The smartphones are getting stale. We've got aggressive design language from every angle and a completely configurable LED strip. On the back.

You don't see that every day, and you can immediately tell this- was more than just an afterthought. The LED effect is impressive and is integrated right throughout the software. You get a notification, it pulses. You've got an incoming call or charging has just finished. It will let you know and of course, there's the gaming integration, but we'll come back to this, because the red magic has a lot of Big Ideas when it comes to gaming, you'll notice, a couple of other departures from tradition here.

This red compete button which further increases performance blocks incoming calls and stops that navigation bar popping up mid-game. You can tell this device isn't messing around here. The fingerprint scanner isn't like one you've ever seen before and whilst as elongated shape does take a bit of getting used to. It is fast and well positioned. However, the red magics peculiarities do come at a cost.

The four-way slanted back means it is really not made for flat surfaces, and this awesome looking RGB LED is on the back. So it's only rarely of use to you when the phone is upside-down. You might have also noticed this pretty severe crack, which occurred from a barely 10 centimeter drops a testament to its slightly less than ideal with strength properties. This aspect was a little disappointing, given the phone's rugged appearance, the red magic is also thicker and heavier than you might be used to, but it's nicely drippy and feels firm. There is no flexing here at all.

Okay, if the design language didn't already give it away. This is ultimately a phone for gamer's, and it would be easy to dismiss it as the red magic uses. This Snapdragon 805 aka last year's chipset, but this would be a mistake you see. Whilst it is a 2017 system on a chip, we've got a slightly overclocked version here, and it is paired with eight gigs of RAM, which is still the most you can get on a smartphone and then, when you factor in the price ready it's competing against other devices that are still stuck with mid-range computing power, so value wise. It's actually a bit of a steal when you combine this power with the accelerate function and the compete button, you're not going to struggle with any current generation game.

The software has been optimized to deliver, not just high frame rates but consistent wants to, and you can tell the work. That's been done behind the scenes. Gaming is also an area where that LED kicks in it can sync to the sound effects or flash when gaming mode is on, and you've got three different lighting patterns to play with I. Wouldn't say this is a game changer. It adds Flair, but really you're buying into it because it looks cool.

There is also an air convection cooling system, something the company was very proud of, but honestly I did still notice the phone getting warm. But that's not to say it isn't helping. Even the battery, though, complements this experience at 3,800 William hours, you're looking at a phone that is in the top five percent in this category. It will, of course, a drain faster if you're using these performance enhancing features, but at least it is up to your discretion. If you want longer battery life, you can just turn them off.

However, clearly some compromises have had to be made to hit this golden $399 price point. The website claims an eighty-four point: eight six percent screen to body ratio, but honestly I'm pretty sure this figure is much lower in actuality. Next to the 1 + 5 t, which has exactly 80 percent. That phone seems to have the better end of the deal. The red magic has a six-inch full HD display and appears to be a pretty standard LCD panel.

It won't blow you away for sure and outdoor viewing is a bit of a struggle, but it's good enough that you can generally lose yourself in the games. You're playing. You might have also been wondering where's the speaker, because it's not anywhere around the sides of the phone, as you might have expected and is in fact found on the back left. The volume is loud for sure, and it isn't muffled too much due to the curved nature of the phone, but it's not quite up there with 20:18 Zane on all phones with dual speaker setups with a price point like this and all the talk being about its gaming capabilities. I was expecting the camera to suck, but thankfully I can safely say it doesn't straight off the bat.

This isn't a dual camera, so you don't get portrait mode or lossless zooming here, but a real effort has been made to build useful and interesting camera shooting options. We've got everything from light painting to being able to clone yourself, and this is a great example of taking hardware that is somewhat limited and making up for it with software, and this camera is no joke. It has a 24 megapixel sensor and an aperture of f11 7 and the photos that come from it are detailed and bursting with that lovely book effect. It struggles a bit with dynamic range and there is no optical image stabilization at all, but similar to the display. Furthermore, it feels good enough for someone who isn't a camera buff and doesn't need all the bells and whistles, but still wants to be able to take good-looking photos on their phone.

Furthermore, it is a good fit. The UI is, for the most part again a positive experience. Android 8.1 is a nice surprise, and we've got some smart inclusions. On top of that, like a dedicated camera home screen, where you can quickly select the mode you want to start in and an all-in-one search mode, it is actually based off set to ease Nubia OS and it kind of feels like a darker version of Shimizu. You why we've got a similar icon shape and a similar layout, but with this phone quite a little gaming oriented animations and sound effects thrown in also seemingly borrowed from Apple's.

Offering is a control center like interface when you swipe up, but it would be unfair to complain. It does work. Well, ok! So, whilst it's a little too early to give a final verdict on the phone, the red magic is exciting for sure for a mid-range price, it is a powerful phone that is packed with unique ideas that, for the most part it pulls off gracefully. You will notice its lack of OLED display, and its single speaker compared to more expensive phones, but considering the price saving.
