OnePlus 9: Is it worth buying?

This is the OnePlus 9, the flagship killer, don't kill me man, or is it, huh? Okay, let's stop using that slogan. OnePlus hasn't used it in seven years. Let's talk real value. The OnePlus 9 costs 730 dollars. Should you actually go out and get it before we dive in? Let me just thank our sponsor for this. Video best buy stick around till the end of the video to hear about their amazing service and how you can buy some really cool stuff from them, including the OnePlus 9.

Let's take a look at the OnePlus 9's price bracket. It is more or less a competition for Samsung's, galaxy s21 and Apple's iPhone 12. Granted these two may or may not cost you about 70 to 100 bucks more depending on whether you manage to land a promotion or not for all intents and purposes. I do think that the OnePlus 9 is the same class phone as these two though it is trying to be a bit cheaper. Is it worth even thinking about getting the OnePlus 9 over these established brands? Let's answer that, let's start by talking about this display nah, it's not important! It's just the thing that you're looking at all the time, while using your phone, the OnePlus 9 has an OLED panel just like this hero Samsung and this here iPhone 12.

You know what else is coming between the three. All three panels are made by Samsung, or you know some subsidiary, the business aspects kind of elude me. The point is these: are all high quality panels made to each brand's specifications? Now I actually happen to like the OnePlus 9 screens the most here and no it's not because it's the most capable it's because it gives you the most options, go in this menu here, and you can choose between what is this five different color calibrations, and then you have these sliders for fine-tuning at the bottom. Now Samsung also has something similar, but not with quite as many precise profiles and the iPhone 12 has no color profiles, you get what apple has chosen for you no surprise there. Additionally, OnePlus has this feature called comfort tone.

It's the same thing as true tone on the iPhone. It basically sets display warmth based on the lighting in the room. You are in it's really cool, and I love it, but sadly the Samsung does not have it. Okay, so look, let me dial it back. A little that was a big tangent I went on.

All of these screens are great. All of them are fantastic. I like this one, because it has all the combined features of the competitors. Also, it has a 120hz display. The Samsung has a 120hz display and the iPhone 12 has a 60hz display.

I know obviously just looking at size. The OnePlus 9 is also the biggest now. This is a personal choice for you to make. Do you want more screen real estate, or do you want a phone that is slightly easier to hold FYI out of these three, I find the galaxy s21 the most comfortable, it's a tad big, but the curved back really helps the iPhone? 12 is okay. It's a bit edgy and baby, but manageable with one hand thanks to its size and then the OnePlus 9 is where I start to do some real thumb gymnastics, but for what it's worth, it feels very well-built and balanced.

Now some people have noted that the frame on the OnePlus 9 is made out of plastic. In my opinion, the finish on the trim is high quality, and it could even maybe trick you into thinking it's metal. It at least does not feel like a cheap plastic toy. Now the fact that the back is still glass also helps for comparison's sake. The Samsung Galaxy s21 went the other way.

It's a metal frame around a plastic back now some people say they like this better me. Personally, I can feel the warm touch of that plastic. Surface pressed against my palm, and I immediately know I guess it's a matter of personal taste, then the iPhone 12 praise be to apple. No compromises have been made here. It's an aluminum frame and a glass back and a glass front.

It feels like a jewel. Furthermore, it breaks like a pretzel that last one was a joke. They all break, don't drop any of them so far, so good, let's move on to the camera. Yes, the OnePlus 9. Has this proud Hasselblad branding on the camera? Supposedly OnePlus worked in close partnership with the legendary camera manufacturer to fine tune its color reproduction.

So is this some truly amazing partnership or just a brand deal for some extra cloud. I am no expert in cameras, but I can tell you what I see in the OnePlus 9 photos. They are consistently cold, and the colors look a bit subdued and dull. The dynamic range seems to be a bit narrow and the photos suffer a bit now in comparison. The OnePlus 9 pro, which has the same Hasselblad branding, is definitely a step better.

Its photos are a bit warmer, its colors pop a bit better, and they are definitely more shareable. For some reason. The photos with the OnePlus 9 look just a bit muted, and I'd run them through a filter before sharing them to social media. Who am I kidding? Nobody follows me on social media, put the OnePlus 9 camerae next to the iPhone 12 and the galaxy s21 and the competition wins. Apples and Samsung's photos just look a bit more lively, more bright, more fun.

They have better range on the dynamics, keeping highlights and shadows visible and the exposure high. The ultra-wide camera on the OnePlus 9, however, is fantastic. Yes, it has the same color calibration, but it has sharp details, and it does not distort over the edges. OnePlus actually made a big deal of the special ultra-wide lens. They used for this camera to fix distortions, and it was worth listening to a five-minute presentation about the ultrawide lens then say: five minutes talking about the black color on your phone or something the 16 megapixel front.

Camera of the OnePlus 9 follows pretty much the same trend it's above average, but the competition is better. Look at the skin tone. Look at the dynamics. The details are fine, but the overall photo look is better on the galaxy and the iPhone samples. I am not saying that the OnePlus 9 camerae is terrible, but I am saying that if camera is your primary focus when buying a new phone, maybe for your next purchase, look at the galaxy s21 and the iPhone 12 before you look at the OnePlus 9.

Sorry, oh press, you properly trashed. If I wonder how you're going to get out of this now. Lets uh talk about performance. For years now, OnePlus has proudly boasted about the speed of its custom, android interface, the oxygen OS. It's always fine-tuned and optimized to give you that feeling of speed and responsiveness, and you know what OnePlus nailed it again with the OnePlus 9 series.

Let's take it from the top. The OnePlus 9 has a 120hz screen with a 360hz touch sampling rate. This means that the phone is checking for finger, taps and swipes 360 times per second 50 more than the galaxy s21 200 more than the iPhone 12. On top of that oxygen, OS is a very light. Android reskin.

It adds some useful features like the display settings I mentioned before, but it does not overindulge on the inside, we have a top tier Qualcomm, snapdragon 888, with a minimum of 8 gigs of ram. Put all of that together, and I just love this phone's performance. It's snappy, it's fast, it is responsive. It's almost like it's reading my mind. I can kind of compare it to the ASUS ROG 4.5, which is a beast of its own. Now I am not bad-mouthing the galaxy s21 or the iPhone 12.

These two are definitely in the same race and as a matter of fact, the iPhone 12 probably wins this race. Its chip is still the most powerful. It absolutely crushes all the benchmarks, but this one just feels so good to use and OnePlus knows this. It also has an excellent haptic engine inside which makes very precise vibrations tips and taps and the whole user interface utilizes these. To give you a really nice force feedback feel when interacting with it sort of like the iPhone 12.

The galaxy s21 also has very nice haptics, but it just does not have the masterful control over them. The OnePlus 9 has stereo speakers much like the iPhone and the galaxy. There is a bottom driver and an amped up earpiece for that woofer tweeter combo on the OnePlus 9. The speakers definitely get loud, but they do sound a bit shallow and tinny the OnePlus 9 pro speakers are great, but the regular knife speaker falls somewhere between average and great. The final important feature we have to discuss is battery life.

Now the OnePlus 9 has a 4 500 William hour battery, and it will last you more or less as long as your iPhones and galaxies out there. Where OnePlus truly shines, however, is its warp charge technology. The OnePlus 9 supports the new work charge 65t, a 65w charging, brick that is provided in the box, and you don't have to buy it separately anyway. This charger can top up your OnePlus 9 from zero to 100 in just half an hour which is kind of insane. If you think about it, you don't need to charge overnight anymore.

You get up in the morning plug in the phone go brush your teeth, go, make yourself a coffee. Come back phone is ready, ready to go final thoughts. Should you actually buy the OnePlus 9 instead of your established galaxy s21 or your banal iPhone 12. There is a couple of things to consider one ecosystem. I know this abstract thing that everybody's talking about, but we don't know what it is.

I get it, but look it's a thing. It exists like, for example, if you already have a MacBook, an iMac, an Apple TV, a HomePod thingy at home, you're, probably not even watching this video you already went out and bought yourself. An iPhone 12. Samsung for its part, is also trying to build an ecosystem. I believe.

Just recently it launched the Samsung smart tags, which is the first Samsung device in a quite a while. That is only capable of pairing up to Samsung smartphones. Now the galaxy watch. On the other hand, yes, it can pair up to other android smartphones and even iPhones, but you get full access to all the galaxy watch. Apps and all the galaxy watch features only if it's synced to a Samsung phone and then the company is still working on synchronizing, galaxy phones with galaxy tablets and then galaxy phones with uh windows, thanks to a partnership with Microsoft, so yeah there's a growing ecosystem there.

But if you put all of that aside, if you don't care about syncing, your smart and stupid devices- and you just want a nice phone- something that is kind of different from the other devices out there- something that can turn heads. But it's still fast and nice to use. And if camera is not your main priority, then absolutely it's a buy, and you save a few bucks. I like the OnePlus 9.
