Welcome back everyone, the lifelong question, which I always have wondered, and I've always wanted to kind of make a video about this, but I never got the chance because I've been so lazy, but let's go ahead and kind of compare the m1 MacBook Pro against the iPad Pro 4th generation. Now the fourth generation iPad comes in two different sizes: the 11 inch and 12.9 inch, and the 12.9 inch actually has a lot of value inside it, which is funny because base price of that 12.9 inch is 9.99 that base model iPad Pro. The 4th gen with the 11-inch panel, is retailing for 7.99. Now, if you go ahead and get that 512 gigabyte iPad Pro for generation that actually costs 1299, obviously, if you add cellular and all that crazy stuff, then it's a little more. But what I will tell you, though, is that in my opinion, I will always rather shoot for a MacBook than an iPad. Just for me, you know for every other person, that's different, and I'll.
Try my best to kind of break down exactly who the use cases would technically be, for you know why an iPad may be better versus something like a MacBook now for me in my workflow, a MacBook is better just because I know film a lot of videos. I like editing a lot of videos and all the apps all the tools, all the that I need. It's pretty much already partitioned in a MacBook and that's typically what I use it for you know I just use it to make videos and all that stuff. You know with an iPad and I personally own an iPad, and I love it and everything, but I just don't find myself using it that much because a MacBook can really do everything an iPad can do for me, but my iPad cannot really do everything. My MacBook can do at least as seamlessly.
You know what I mean, but there are so many advantages for an iPad 2 that I really just love iPads like in an ideal situation. I'll tell you to get both, but if you had to choose one I feel like iPads would technically be better for somebody who is a graphic designer or somebody who needs to use an Apple Pencil or somebody who's, technically, a student, and they don't want to go and shell out a bunch of money for a MacBook, or maybe they need something like the stability of an iPad. In my opinion, iPads are way more stable than mac books from my experience. So, if you're, somebody who you know is on the go all the time, and you need something, that's super portable, and you just want to be able to throw it in your book bag and just move on with your life. An iPad may be a better option and one reason why I actually love an iPad over a MacBook.
Are you know a couple of things? First, but with my iPad, all the apps are so optimized for the iPads that I can just use a specific app or play a game for like 10 minutes things like you know, 149 was enabled and stuff. I could be able to play that game for a little of time on my iPad. Without the obviously there are no fans in it, it would get a little warm, but compared to my MacBook it would get pretty warm. It would just you know, so the fans would start ramping up and all that stuff. Luckily, now with the m1 MacBook Pro that has actually been, you know leveled out a little.
So if you're a heavy performing person, if you need something that has you know the most amount of power and stuff the m1 MacBook Pro with the Apple Silicon, now really changes the game a little and I feel like a lot of people like the iPad because of the stability, but now with the m1 MacBook Pro that actually alleviates a lot of the stability issues now and for me personally, sometimes apps would be unsupported and, with the know, macOS Big Sur. That's a big problem now, but that's more of a software issue, not a real hardware one. The fans would ramp up like crazy and anytime. I would do anything on my MacBook. It would glitch it wouldn't be a smooth experience.
Luckily, with iPads with that 120hz refresh rate, that's a really awesome advantage, as well as the Apple Pencil support, but everything is just so much smoother on an iPad but, like I said now, with the m1 chip inside the MacBook, that same type of smoothness is almost there. Now, unfortunately, we don't have the 120hz refresh rate like we do on the iPads, but I think for a lot of people out there. It would probably still be okay. I think the smoothness from the MacBook is still there 100 now. The other thing I want to hit on would probably be the software experience now we're running iPadOS on the iPad as a given we're running macOS on the MacBook you know, and if you're somebody who needs you know desktop like performance, I think both of these will probably end up doing a good job.
But if you find yourself honestly, this is probably a hot take, but if you find yourself trying to get the most amount from one of these machines, I will tell you a MacBook will be able to pretty much do everything you would need to do as long as you're, not trying to your know, use the 120 refresh rate as long as you don't need the vast array of iPhone and iPad apps that natively work. They do work on m1 mac books now, but it's still not as good as something like an iPad. In my opinion, as well as the Apple Pencil support, like I stated, the Apple Pencil really adds a lot more character to the device, because you can go and write out a bunch of notes and do everything you want to and draw, and the Apple Pencil is a really, really good input device on iPads. The MacBook doesn't really have that capability, but you still have all those apps that are supported and with the iPads they're, really just like light versions of what you're getting from a MacBook. So if you, you know something like photoshop, for example, I think we now have.
You know full-on photoshop on our iPads, but we didn't really have it for a long time as well as things like Final Cut Pro. You have, you know suffusion and iMovie and stuff on iPads and trust me. I love those things they work flawlessly, but when you look at something like Final Cut Pro on the mac books, for me, the work experience just the workflow is so much better on something like Final Cut Pro or these desktop tools, even like the adobe one. Those are just so much better tools, in my opinion than you know the ones we're getting on iPads and iPhones right now. Now, that's not an OCTA iPads, because they still have a lot that they can do within them, and I will tell you if we're comparing base models of both the 799 iPad Pro versus the 1299 MacBook Pro with the m1 chip they're still, the iPad may actually still be a better deal because you're getting a lot of capability behind that machine, but, like I said before, with that mac books to a lot of people, it may be a better option when you consider the fact that you can go ahead and do a lot more with that machine.
Now. Another thing I'll probably end up telling you is that with the iPad, you are getting a camera now I think, for a lot of people. They may just be like okay, that's like funny okay, but you really don't need a camera on the MacBook. What I will tell you, though, is that I've been in some situations where I have a portable machine like the new m1 MacBook Pro, and I'm like man. If I could just get Snapchat on this thing and actually use it like an actual machine, then that would be awesome.
Now, there are ways to go about it and now, with the m1 MacBook Pro support with Apple apps, I'm sure Snapchat's going to work, but it's still not going to be as good as something like the iPad and now the iPad, I don't even think Snapchat supported, but apps like Instagram Twitter. All these apps that are built into app store are so much better than their web counterparts and that's pretty much what you're going to be accessing them on from a MacBook things like Instagram there's, not a native Instagram iPad, app really, but there's still one. You can download and there's not really a native MacBook app, but you have to go to the web app to use it aka safari, and I'm not a huge fan of you know. Web apps I like dedicated apps. It just so happens that for workflows, those apps are better, but for entertainment, an iPad is an perfect entertaining device.
YouTube in my opinion, is amazing. On iPads I love that you have picture and picture just like macOS. You have split screen, multitasking, there's still quite a bit of ram on this machine. You can get six gigs of ram on the iPad Pro and that's a lot of ram for this for an iPad at least, and when you look at the MacBook Pro that has eight gigabytes of ram, and what I can tell you are: is that there's a lot of similarities there too now the MacBook Pro still has more ram inside it, but considering the fact that that is also, you know, 500 more expensive than the base model iPad Pro. That is still something to kind of keep in mind and also very interestingly enough.
Maybe it's not even interesting, but I feel like the panel on the iPads are better. If you're somebody who needs to look at a panel all day, maybe looking at the same, you know, 13-inch random MacBook won't really be the best panel. I mean it's still perfect, but when you look at the iPads with its super high resolution, it's still pretty similar to the MacBook and in some cases, even bigger with the 12.9 inch, but you also get that 120 hertz refresh rate. I think that's a really awesome capability that you have on the iPad. You know that makes that that makes that experience feel so much more futuristic.
Comparing you know the standard 60hz versus to something like that 120 hertz on the iPad. It really makes a little of difference for sure and, like I said, I mean I feel like. If you have the money, I'll definitely say go for a MacBook, but you really don't even need to get the m1. You know MacBook, you can definitely get older one, but if it was between these two and if money wasn't an issue, I would 100 get the m1 MacBook Pro I feel like. That is a no-brainer I feel like that has a lot more capability.
But when you look at the future, both these are going to be lasting for a very long time, even though the iPad Pro has that apple a12z chip, which is technically older than the a14 chip that we're getting inside it. I still think the iPad has a lot of capability. It's not ending anytime soon and the software features I feel like that are going to be happening very soon in the future are going to be way cooler on an iPad than on a macOS machine. But on a flip side I feel like with that m1 chip, inside it apple, is going to be making some serious software improvements in the future of you know macOS to make that specific software that much better. So I don't want to sit here and say you know.
Oh, the iPad is better or the MacBook is better. I feel like both of these are amazing tools and if you can purchase both then go for it. I feel like for a price per dollar standpoint, though I still kind of feel like the base model iPad Pro at 7.99, it's even cheaper. If you're suing, it is actually a better deal, probably than the m1 MacBook Pro. I feel like you're getting more of a machine there for the know, dollar value, even though the m1 MacBook Pro is the better machine.
Overall, I feel like the iPad Pro. Maybe I know for 7.99. It's really hard to beat that, and it's even cheaper in the used market, but on top of that, if it was, you know my opinion, you don't have to listen to me if you don't want to, but if you don't have to go and pick up a brand new MacBook right now or a brand new iPad, I would 100 tell you to wait. There's no reason for you to go and rush out to buy these things. Now.
The m1 MacBook pros are super early in their life cycle. The iPads from what I've heard are going to be. You know, recycled and refreshed very, very soon, they're going to have an a14 chip, and they're going to be having a lot of features in 2021. So I'll probably tell you, if you can wait it out a little longer then getting the newer versions of both of these will probably end up doing you better and even if all else fails, if the next iPad Pro you know, isn't that great or if it's you know outdated or whatever, then for sure you can still pick up a m1 MacBook Pro and by then the 16-inch m1 MacBook Pro may actually be out, and I feel like that's going to be the machine that people are going to flock to, and I'll definitely tell you 100, that's the one I'm getting for sure, but I'll definitely tell you if it was between these two. I think I made a pretty decent case for both I feel like the m1 chip.
MacBook Pro would be the one I would go for. The MacBook Air with the m1 chip is also a perfect option too, but the iPad Pro with that you know 12.9 inch panel or that 11 inch model are very good options and I feel like that base model iPad Pro. The fourth generation is probably the better value per dollar when it comes down to both these devices, so that really pretty much covers it up. If you guys have any other questions or anything.
