iPhone SE (2020) vs iPhone XR After 1 Week - NOT what I expected.. By Brandon Butch

What's up guys, my name is Brandon and the iPhone SE and the iPhone 10 are: are the current, the cheapest iPhones available for purchase on Apple's website? So I wanted to do an in-depth comparison between both of these budget-friendly iPhones and hopefully help you make the right purchasing decision now. This is going to be a follow-up to my. Should you buy the iPhone SE or iPhone 10 our video that I posted about a week before the iPhone SE actually released, and I needed to do this follow-up, because at that point, I didn't have the phone in my hands and since I've been using this as my daily driver for about a week now, I have a lot more thoughts, and you know some things that actually surprise me to share in this video all right? So first things. First, the iPhone SE has absolutely blown me away so far, I did not expect to be lucky in this phone as much as I do. But with that being said, I do still miss a few things and one of the first things of course, is going to be that much bigger display, like we have on the iPhone 10 are here so the iPhone 10 AR has a 6.1 inch liquid Retina display, while the iPhone SE has a 4.7 inch Retina display and, of course with that display means a higher resolution on the iPhone 10 AR, but the pixel density is the exact same on both devices at 326 pixels per inch. So there's not really a big difference in quality at all.

I watch YouTube videos, twitch streams. You know I scroll through the Apple news, a web browser I, do everything that you guys probably do on a day-to-day basis and I really could not see any difference at all in these two screens. Now this is the liquid retina versus the retina, so you would think liquid retina would be better on the iPhone 10 R, but once again you would really have to look like under a magnifying glass or something to see a difference in these two displays. The only thing is that the iPhone SE is just smaller, so it's going to be harder to see. You know very precise details and videos and things like that and speaking of videos.

One thing I found myself doing a lot with the iPhone SE over the past week is trying to pinch into zoom on YouTube videos, because I keep thinking that this black bezel up here and all around is just empty space in the video. So I, could you know pinch to zoom like I can on the iPhone 10 R I keep getting that confused. It took me like two or three days to realize: I can't do that on the iPhone SE and that those are actually the bezels and not part of the screen when I'm watching YouTube videos. So you have the quality. Overall, experience isn't bad on the iPhone SE, but media consumption on the iPhone 10 R is just much better, and it's not only because of the bigger screen and the smaller bezels, but also because the sound is better on the iPhone 10 R.

So we have stereo speakers on both devices, but for some reason the audio is just worse on the iPhone SE than it is on the iPhone 10 R, and it's not bad I'm, just being overly critical and overly observant when it comes to the sound. But the sound does feel a little more tinny and less full on the iPhone SE than does on the iPhone.10 are especially when you hold the phone like this. It seems like the audio levels are just a little uneven. It sounds like the bottom firing. Speakers are just louder and more powerful than the front facing speaker right here and the earpiece.

Now, even though nobody likes the bezels, the big bezels on the iPhone SE allow for the home button at the bottom here and touch ID and while I still do prefer face ID on the 10r. There are definitely times when I prefer that fingerprint sensor, for example, I'll, be like in my car at a drive-thru and I, can't be paying complete attention to my iPhone. So I just want to be able to pick it up, and you know, put my fingerprint sensor in and get the password in and get the phone unlocked without having to actually look at the phone itself and pay attention to the phone itself, because I'm trying to pay attention to the line moving in front of me and things like that, so don't worry, I'm, not texting and driving, or anything like that. I just use it when I'm stopped and like in a drive-through or something like that. But still there have been times when I, just love being able to unlock my phone without having to look at it and kind of adjust.

My face I could just press my finger from my pocket and know it's going to be unlocked when I pull it out. So at this point in time, I do like the practicality of touch ID better, but the bloodless and the overall sense of security I get with face. I'd is still better to me because, obviously face ID is more secure than touch ID. It's very easy to bypass touch ID, and you know you can be passed out. So I could use your fingerprint or something like that, whereas you can't do that with face ID.

Of course, as long as you have the requirement attention feature enabled I, also really like double tapping on at the haptic home button on the iPhone SE here to activate reach ability, whereas on the iPhone 10 R. It's easy. If you know what to do, but sometimes you can see right there, it'll pull down like spotlight, search, you'll click on an application or something like that. It's just not as easy and straightforward as it is on the iPhone SE, which I like now reach ability, of course, is it as needed and as this area on the iPhone SE, just because you could already pretty much use it with one hand it's still nice to have, but on the iPhone SE, of course, you'd pretty much need it, because you'll be able to pull down the control center up at the very top a lot easier. But on the iPhone SE, you pull up the control center from the bottom, which I think I actually liked better than pulling up from the top right on the iPhone.10 are the only thing I don't like about the control center on the iPhone SE. Is that when you pull it down, sometimes I'll pull down like that I'll pull down my brightness on accident when I'm trying to close it.

So it's a little annoying, and sometimes I'll just have to press the home button to get back to the home screen, but that's really my only complaint with the control center on at the iPhone SE. So now, let's talk about that camera, because this is an area that was all speculation in my previous video, but now that I've actually used these two phones side by side. I can tell you one thing: my original prediction was correct, so the iPhone SE does take better photos than the iPhone 10 R, and once again, it's due to that a 13, a Bionic chip and the second-generation smart HDR. So not only is the camera quality better on the iPhone SE, but the features inside the camera application itself are also far superior to the iPhone 10 R. So this is all you get on the iPhone 10 or you don't get any kind of option to change your quality or anything like that.

You have to go into settings to change all that, but on the iPhone SE we get the iPhone 11 style camera. So we can swipe up right here, and you can see we get all these options down here for the camera and if we swipe down and go over to video, you can see up in the top right. You can actually change the video quality. So if you go and tap on HD I'll change it to 4k beats up on 30 that will change the frame rate to 60, and you can go through all the different modes straight from within the camera. Application no need to go into settings and again on the iPhone 10.

Are you cannot do that? It'll just show what you have up in the top right and if you tap on it, you can see nothing happens. So, even though the iPhone SE uses the exact same camera sensor as the iPhone 8, which is a generation older than the iPhone 10, are the image processing from the 13 Bionic chip and the iPhone SE makes the photos and the videos look excellent and far better than they looked on the iPhone 8. You can see these examples here and one of the common themes that I noticed with the iPhone SE is that it seems to always nail the skin tones and again that's thanks to the 13 Bionic and the second generation. Smart HDR, but I noticed that the iPhone 10 are, since it only has first generation smart HDR and the a12 Bionic chip and sometimes produces a little more reddish skin tone, and it's not always as accurate as the iPhone SE. But when it comes to low light or really bright situations, the iPhone SE is not near as good as the iPhone 11, but compared to the iPhone 10 are I did notice that the iPhone SE is also better in low light situations.

But, like I said, neither one of these phones stand a chance against the iPhone 11, since we have night mode on the iPhone 11 and not on either one of these devices. But when it comes to good lighting conditions, the iPhone SE and the iPhone 10 are take practically the same pictures. It's really hard to tell the difference between the two in most well-lit situations, but you can also see in times like this. You can see a little more detail in the trees right here on the 10r versus the SE. So overall, the iPhone 10 arm has the better camera sensor versus the iPhone SE, but the iPhone SE could be better for some people because of the software based features.

Portrait mode is also better on the iPhone SE, because you get all the portrait lighting effects, whereas the iPhone 10 arm limits it to just the natural light, the studio light and the contour light- and you can see here that the iPhone SE gets all of those lighting effects, just like the iPhone 11 here now when it comes to the selfies, both get the same ones for the selfies, you get all the effects for the selfie camera on the iPhone 10 are, but for some reason, not on that rear facing camera. Now, speaking of that front, facing camera, both have a 7 megapixel sensor. So you're going to get very, very similar results. You can see the skin tones are a little different, even there in the preview. As far as my skin goes and really the big difference, I noticed is in video 2 go to video and take it back.

You can see you get a much wider shot with the iPhone SE than you do with the iPhone 10 R. So that really comes in handy with, like FaceTime calls or whatever you would be using a front facing camera. With it's always nice to have a wider angle on that front, facing camera just to fit more in to the frame. I also wanted to point out that you only get 1080p 30 frames per second video on the front-facing camera of the iPhone SE, whereas you get 1080p 60 frames per second on the front-facing camera of the iPhone are, despite both of them being very, very similar and having seven megapixels of peeps. Now I didn't want to admit this, but I do also miss hen, emoji and me emoji, like we have on the iPhone 10 are here.

It's super fun, especially on FaceTime calls to like make yourself an animal and just kind of make the conversation a little funny bring a little humor to it and even just to send to people it's funny. Sometimes so I do miss that you cannot do it on the iPhone SE. You could just have your reactions, and you can have your emoji character set up, but you can't actually talk as them, and you know record videos and put it on FaceTime and things like that, which is a little unfortunate now. As for the performance, I didn't do a dedicated speed test between these two, yet so I'm just going to do a quick one in this video, but really the difference in day-to-day usage is not going to be very major. However, I do think that the iPhone SE is faster when it comes to gaming, when it comes to just loading up random things around the OS, it's just faster and smoother, and again it's all thanks to that 813 Bionic chip.

Of course, we have the a12 chip in the iPhone 10 R, and we have three gigabytes of RAM on both devices. Now Apple claims that the a13 chip is 20% faster than the a12, while using 40% less power. So Apple is saying that the iPhone SE should be at least 20% faster than the iPhone 10 R, while also not draining a battery as quickly and that's kind of been what I noticed throughout using the iPhone SE for this past week and just for fun since I didn't do a dedicated speed test between the iPhone 10 R and the iPhone SE. We're gonna launch up a few games, real, quick and just see how much faster the SE loads than the 10 R, or maybe in some cases where the 10r loads faster than the iPhone SE, so we're gonna start with subway surfers press that at the same time, we had both closed, and you can see there. The SE is pulling away, and it loaded before the iPhone 10 are by like a good second, and if we move on to something a little more intensive like pub G, we press them.

At the same time, there you'll see that this takes a little more CPU and GPU power to get it up and running, especially to get it up and running quicker, and you can see there. The iPhone SE is loading this first as well, not by that big of a margin, but you can see still just loading up. These games are even faster on the iPhone SE and just navigating around again seems smoother than the iPhone 10 are and as far as the RAM management goes, both have 3 gigabytes of RAM. So I really could not tell the difference in terms of RAM on either device. Now, as far as the battery life goes, I hope you guys all saw my big battery test comparison.

Video I will leave that linked up in the cards and down on the description in case you somehow missed that big video. But if you watch that video, you would know that the iPhone 10 R does get slightly better battery life than the iPhone SE and by slightly I, mean over an hour more of on screen time. So I would expect at least one to two hours more battery life on the iPhone 10 R than the iPhone SE, and that's kind of expected when you have a 2942 William hour battery compared to an 1821 William hour battery on the iPhone SE, it's essentially 3000 William hours versus two thousand William hours so kind of expected, but that is the case with battery life, but still the iPhone SE battery can usually get me through most of the day, but I do also realize that I'm using my iPad Pro a lot more for media consumption. Now, just because it's a lot more enjoyable, I, don't really like watching tons of videos and tons of content on the SE, just because it's really not big enough. It's not really made for watching.

You know media and movies, and things like that, so that definitely factors into why I'm using my iPhone SE, a little less than I would be using the iPhone, 10 or still I have absolutely no complaints about the battery life on the iPhone SE, especially since it has that same battery as the iPhone 8, it's pretty impressive. What Apple can do with software and also with the 813 Bionic chip, and thankfully, both devices can wirelessly charge because they have the glass back also fast, charging we have fast charging on both devices. I think that's a really great underrated feature of the iPhone SE. Apple did not have to include that, but fast charging makes a huge difference on the iPhone SE, especially since that battery is so small, and I also realized that it's a lot easier to set my iPhone SE on a wireless charger. Just because it's a lot smaller of a device.

It weighs less it's thinner, and it's just easier to manage. I guess, like even in your pocket, you'll notice, a pretty nice difference in the two. It's a lot smaller, a lot more compact, as expected, I didn't really say a lot of that just because it's kind of given and lastly, I wanted to talk about the pricing and which one you should buy. So this is a follow-up video to my what should you buy iPhone, Center or iPhone SE, video, so I want to give you guys an update on my take on which one of these devices you should buy so the iPhone 10 are at $5.99 and the iPhone SE starts at 399, both 64 gigabytes. To start with now, I still love the iPhone 10 are to death, but there's really just no denying at this point that the iPhone SE is clearly the better value here, not to mention it's going to last, at least one year longer than the iPhone 10 are in terms of software support much later down the road.

So if you don't mind the Oder looking front design, I can't really say the overall design, because the back of the iPhone SE looks modern. It has a glass back and the centered Apple logo. It just looks a lot more modern than the front. But if you don't mind the older looking front design with touch ID and slightly lower battery life, then the iPhone SE is a no-brainer purchase for this price, not to mention it's a lot easier to just carry around and use on a daily basis. Since it's you know much smaller, it's much thinner.

It's a lot easier to put on your wireless charger. It's a lot easier to take in and out of your pocket things like that. Now that 399 price is enticing, but then again you only get 64 gigabytes. So my recommendation to you guys for the iPhone SE is just to pay $50 more and go for the 128 gigabyte model for 449. It's still 200 dollars less than the iPhone 10 are, but once again that $50 is going to be well worth it.

If you plan on keeping this phone for at least a few years, but on the flip side, if you want a more modern design with a bigger, better display with face ID and with better battery life, then the iPhone 10 are maybe for you, however, I think at $200 more than the iPhone SE I think that's a little much and I think that the iPhone SE is going to have to be the better value here of these two for pretty much everybody now with that being said, if you are really set on giving the iPhone 10 are, I would definitely go the used route. I would look at used ones on eBay or Facebook marketplace, so you can get one for about the same price as a new iPhone SE, but just comparing new to new I think that the iPhone SE is the better value here, especially because the battery life. It's not that big of a difference. You know the difference in audio quality is not that big of a difference. You get a better camera and really the only thing, that's a big difference and a big change for people.

It's going to be that face ID versus touch ID, so if you want to pay $200 more basically just to have face ID versus touch ID, then that's up to you again. These purchasing decisions always come down to purse preference I'm just here to lay out the facts and state my personal opinion after using both phones extensively. So you could do with that information, as you please, I'm, just honestly, really surprised by the SE. So far, it's a lot better than I expected, and before I got the phone in hand I pretty much already planned out. This video and I actually thought that the iPhone 10 R would be the better value and I would end up recommending the iPhone 10 R by the end of this video, but I am surprised to say that I recommend the iPhone SE over the 10 R for sure but yeah.
