Hey it's Chris for the current iPhone 12 cycle. I chose to go big for the last six months, or so it's been the iPhone 12 Pro max. That's been sliding into my pockets been snapping. My photos been texting my messages and been powering my car play, and I thought, with the release of this brand-new purple iPhone 12 here. I thought I would take some time to reflect on my half year of ownership with the pro max to just see. If I think I got it right or wrong, should I have gone with that regular 12.
Would that actually have been all right, and maybe this will give you some insight for your own purchase decision, because not everyone just pulls the trigger. I understand right when a new phone is released, wow. That is a very different color than I was actually expecting. It's really light it's more lavender than a deep purple. It's not really dark.
Furthermore, it's fascinating, though you know it feels eastern, almost that's what it kind of reminds me of so in terms of pricing. The regular iPhone 12 starts at 7.99, while the pro max here starts at 1099. So that's a 300 difference. What do you get, and what don't you get for that 300 now? For that difference, the max gives you 0.6 inches more diagonal screen real estate, a 47, larger camera sensor, an added telephoto lens versus the iPhone 12, and it's also going to give you apple's program format, and something else is cool when it comes to the camera. Is the sensor shift stabilization? This does not have that and then, of course, you'll be able to take night mode portraits.
This has a LIDAR sensor and in terms of battery life, the 12 pro max is gonna. Give you three hours of additional video playback time. That's how apple puts it when it's talking about battery comparison versus the 12. And then, of course, the last big difference is you're. Just going to get more storage over here with the 12 pro max; otherwise they both had the same processor and they both get to use the same mag MagSafe accessories, which is pretty cool.
They both unlock with face ID, which is really useful. They both have that new ceramic display shielding and both of these screens have the same max brightness for HDR content. Now, in my mind, the purpose of this video is to weigh in on those differences and tell you whether in the real world practically have they made a big difference for me and in the process. I want to help you figure out if you haven't bought yet, if you're considering this purchase, whether it might make a difference for you or whether you should hold off and wait we'll talk about. Is this a good time to buy an iPhone anyways at the end of the video? Now I actually already unboxed a red iPhone 12 back closer to the launch, so feel free to check that out, if you're, just interested in a full iPhone, 12 unboxing or that color in particular, and I've also talked quite a bit more in depth about the iPhone 12 Pro max here and how I feel like it's kind of misunderstood.
So you can also go down that rabbit hole on this channel I'll link these all up down in the description for you. If you want to get more information on this phone, but I'm going to confess something I was fully planning this year to go with the new mini iPhone. I was fully prepared to go smaller to go lighter, and you know from a lot of the videos that you've seen in the tech space here, that a lot of other tech YouTubers did go down that route and were super happy with it and, as the Apple event was unfolding, it occurred to me to take that same route as well. Until I saw that the 12 pro max had a physically larger camera sensor. That's what got me in fact that camera sensor actually convinced me to buy two one.
That's my personal iPhone and one that's my business iPhone and the phone I got for the business here. I don't even view this as an iPhone to me. It's purely a camera. I use it like a camera, and you can tell by the apps that I've got loaded on here. I just use it for the camera.
So for me, this just slots in as a professional camera alongside the five Sony cameras that I typically use. Sometimes it becomes part of a multicar setup. Sometimes it's just the phone or the camera that I take with me on a professional video shoot like I did with the air tags, unboxing and initial impressions review. There's a ton of iPhone footage shot on this phone, and if you want to see what it looks like, you can go check out that air tag unboxing video. But while I was deciding what phone to order, the other thing I was thinking about was you know what my old iPhone 11 was often ending the day in low power mode.
So I was thinking maybe that extra battery life that you do get thanks to that physically larger battery in the pro max would be useful to me on top of that larger sensor, and so I made a snap decision and I didn't get the mini, I didn't get the regular 12. I got the max and I honestly haven't really regretted it. I mean it is a huge phone and there's just no way that it's not going to be bulky in the pocket, but that's really been basically the only downside. For me, I mean honestly if I could get a bigger sensor in a smaller iPhone, 12 body. That's what would be ideal for me because watching content like Netflix or YouTube or playing games with that.6 inches of extra diagonal screen space, isn't super game changing for me, because if I'm going to be viewing content on the go I. e.
when I'm not in front of an iPad or my Mac or just my bigger desktop setup, then all I need to do is just get the point. I don't really need to feel super immersed in it. In fact, I would say using AirPods or headphones and just adding in good sound makes content on mobile feel way more immersive than does an extra 0.6 inches of screen real estate. Honestly, so just my two cents, I don't think you should base your buying decision between these phones just on the screen size alone. On the flip side, though, I think the camera capabilities and the camera differences, that is where we see the big enough difference to maybe consider making a purchase or making that upgrade.
Now, honestly, I really don't feel like the average person needs the camera upgrades here. They really are, I think, mostly just like icing on the cake they're really nice to have, but do you need to have them as an average person? No, probably not now my wife did go ahead and get a 12 mini, which has a similar camera setup to the regular 12, while of course, I'm shooting on the 12 pro max and whenever I switch and start using her camera to take a picture of something that old phrase comes to mind. You don't know what you have tilled it's gone. I really end up missing that telephoto zoom, but for me that doesn't even feel like enough. I wish that this had 10 times or bigger optical zoom, because I feel like a lot of the stuff that is worth capturing in life often happens at a distance.
Now, if you're, not a pro photographer, you're, most likely not going to care about apple's program, which is very cool, but really only people who spend hours perfecting and getting the most out of their photos are going to care. Additionally, night mode, portraits, I'm going to be honest. I haven't really used them at all. What does, though, very much matter to me at night or in dark areas? Is that larger image sensor for video stuff, in particular the iPhone in general? Any iPhone is still the best video taking phone hardware that exists, but thanks to this larger sensor, I'm of the opinion that I am able to capture moments, whether it's personal or professional, that are fleeting that only lasts for just a little, and they're gone in the highest possible quality that I can and that doesn't matter to everybody. But it does to me like even this really nice Sony zv1 here can struggle in low light situations, and it has an f 1.8 aperture which, for you, camera people out, there means it can shoot in pretty low light. But I would take this and its camera sensor over that zv1 in low light situations now LIDAR.
That is something that I don't think is worth upgrading for on the iPhone 12 Pro max here. It's positioned as something that's going to make AR better, but at the moment it just really doesn't matter. Here's your LIDAR sensor and practically speaking, it is just completely forgettable in day-to-day usage. Unless somebody reminded you, you wouldn't even realize that this phone didn't have it, and this one did for the most part, 99.9 percent of the time. I do think it has a future and in the future it will play an important role in apple's AR ecosystem.
That future is just not happening yet so just to wrap up my camera thoughts, you really have to want a better camera to spend 300 more for three times optical zoom and for better low light shots. Personally, I really wouldn't go there unless you plan on using the camera system to actually earn money, or you just like having the best and knowing that you have the best, and I understand some people are there and that's what they want and that's cool. And now that brings us to battery life. The last real feature, I think we need to consider here when picking the right, iPhone 12. In terms of William hours, which is how we measure battery capacity on phones like this, the 12 pro does have a significantly bigger battery with 3687 William hours versus 2815 on the regular old 12.
Now I got my 12 pro max at launch and right now, I'm sitting at 98 maximum capacity with my battery, and where are we at here? It's monday, May 10th, and this was announced back in September and just to give you kind of snapshot of how often I use this. In the last 10 days, I've had four days with over five hours of screen on time and personally, I feel very impressed by the battery life on the 12 pro max at this point. The only thing that can make it better is, if I didn't have to charge it every day, but that's where we're at with all the different iPhones, and so it doesn't really make too much of a difference in terms of which iPhone should I get, because I'm going to end up charging the 12 and the 12 pro max at the end of the day. What I will say is that, if you're a so-called power user too, so if you're, somebody who also has several days with over five hours of screen on time per week- and you can actually go into your battery app and check your battery usage and your battery health. So you can get a good idea of that, because maybe you're not aware, then.
To be honest, I think you might be able to benefit from this extra battery capacity, because, if you're always finding yourself winding up in low power mode, if it's getting to be like eight o'clock at night, and you're, not sure if you're going to be able to finish the day out with your current battery, then consider the battery capacity here. But even for people who think they will really get a lot out of that extra battery, I'm not sure that it's worth upgrading just for that, especially for people who wouldn't mind using a MagSafe power accessory like anger's power core magnetic 5k, for instance, or there might be people out there who are like me who, when I run an errand like I'm, going to pick up some packages from the PO box, for instance, I often use CarPlay, which means I plug my phone in, and it charges, while I'm in the car for 15 or 20 minutes, and it tops up my battery, and so I'm good to go for the rest of the day. You know that little extra boost. So if you have some extra money to burn for the camera for the battery or the extra storage, then it might be worth upgrading for the pro max for certain people. I can't say that I haven't really enjoyed those things, but honestly for the majority of folks, you can stick with the 12 and really, really like it and now in purple, which yeah.
If that's your thing, it's looking pretty good. So just to tie things off here, do I regret spending some extra money and getting this bigger, bulkier phone? You know because it is bulky when I'm carrying it around. I really don't if I could get the benefits that this has with a smaller form factor. I would do that in an instant, because I don't prefer the bulk and what I mean is if I could have a smaller sized iPhone with bigger capabilities. Furthermore, I would love that, but that said, there's no such thing as a perfect phone right now for most people at least not for me now.
Furthermore, I think the last thing to mention today is whether this is a good time to buy an iPhone. So if you need a new phone, I think it's obvious to get it right. Now I had somebody asking me you know recently: should we get a new iPhone right now it was like this. iPhone is good. The last iPhone was good.
The next iPhone is going to be good, and I feel like there's really not a bad model to jump on. If you need something right now. That said, there are rumors that a foldable iPhone could really become a reality in 2023, and so, if you get in on this cycle right now, that gives you know about two years until that cycle hits. If you want to get in on that which could be cool, and the other thing to think about is, is there a good deal to be had? Well, it's not always the best time to buy a new iPhone when it's announced. That's when it's going to be the most expensive.
So if you're into saving a little of money, you could be on the lookout for some good deals. Coming up. We got Black Friday coming up and in between Black Friday, and the holidays is usually when you're going to find the best deal on the current model, iPhone. So we're coming up on that season, and so, if you don't need something today, and you want to save a little of money, you might just wait and see what's coming up in terms of deals, I hope that this video was helpful, and again I'll link up my unboxing and first coverage of that red, iPhone 12 and then for people who really want to get deeper into pro raw into the iPhone's HDR capabilities and into why. I thought that the 12 pro max was a little misunderstood.
Uh. If you really are interested in this phone, I think you should check out those resources, I'll link all that stuff up down in the description I do just want to.
