Hey guys mark here and after a little of trouble yesterday, I was finally able to get my hands on the iPhone 12 Pro that I pre-ordered no regular iPhone 12. Yet, unfortunately, but at least I do have this one to do some coverage, I've had it for about 24 hours now, and I've got some thoughts and first impressions to share with you guys. So the pro model I ordered is the pacific blue version, and I have to say I do love the new color, keep in mind that it isn't nearly as bright or as saturated as it is in the photos, though, in fact, if you're in some dim lighting conditions, it doesn't even really look blue, it's more like a gray. The back glass has a matte finish for fighting the good fight against those fingerprints, but the side rails of the pro model definitely do not. These are stainless steel, and they're extremely glossy, unless you're wearing gloves all the time. These side rails are going to be very dirty constantly speaking of the side rails, as I'm sure you've noticed by now, Apple has gone with a flat design this year.
That's very reminiscent of the great iPhones of old, like the 4s, the 5 and the original SE, which is one of my favorite designs of all time. I'm a sucker for this precision milling though it feels very industrial and modern, and I love the way it feels in the hand this 6.1 inch pro is fairly comfortable to hold, but I can tell you right now that the big boy, the pro max, probably isn't going to be I've, got a sneaking suspicion that it's going to cut into your hand a bit where the edges are flat and not rounded. Okay, let's talk about what comes in the box as you can see, it's quite a fair bit thinner than every other iPhone box previously, and that's because Apple is not including a charging brick or a set of wired earphones in the box. This year they cited environmental impact as the reason they're doing this, and while I do think that that's a good move that helps offset their carbon footprint, I think it could have been handled a little better. For example, inside the box they included an USB c2, lightning cable.
Instead of an USB a to lightning cable, most previous iPhone customers, unless they're coming from the iPhone 11 series phone, have an USB a power brick. So the argument that most people have a charging brick in their home doesn't really hold up all that. Well, aside from that, though, I think apple should have done. One simple thing that would solve literally all of these problems, if Apple had put a small coupon in these boxes. That would entitle you to redeem a free charging.
Brick at your local Apple Store. Everybody would be happy. The iPhone boxes would still be smaller, so Apple could still fit more on a plane and reduce their carbon footprint. Most people, who already have a charging brick, wouldn't bother to redeem their free charger, so that would still cut down on e-waste. Paying customers would still get a charging brick if they need one and wouldn't have to pay extra for one and, as a bonus apple could drive customers to their Apple stores, who might end up picking an accessory or two while they're.
There everybody's happy anyway enough ranting about that. I'm done the iPhone 12 series. All come with apple's new 5, nanometer, a14 bionic and from what I can see so far. It's a really fast phone coming from the Pixel 4a, with its snapdragon 730g, the difference is fairly significant, and I never considered the 4a slow. In fact, I was very impressed by the 4a and, if you're more interested in a budget android phone, I recommend checking out my full review up here, but the 12 pro is just super snappy apps open instantly, and it flies through iOS 14.
I wish that apple had gone with a high refresh rate display this year, even if it was just 90 hertz instead of the full 120, but I guess with the 5g modems sapping power like crazy. They couldn't do both 5g and a high refresh rate display. I'd personally take 120 hertz over 5g any day of the week. But hey that's just me. We do still have that notch up at the top, but the display is excellent.
Overall, all iPhone models this year are getting a 1080p or higher OLED panel, which I think is a great move, and this pro model's display is tack, sharp and has excellent, colors and contrast. One thing: I'm a little concerned about this year is battery life. I haven't done enough testing for a conclusive answer on whether battery life is better or worse, on the iPhone 12 series when comparing it to the iPhone 11 series, but I have a sneaking suspicion. It's going to be a little worse. Apple chose to make the iPhone 12 series 11, thinner and 13 smaller.
This apparently has led to a reduction in battery capacity down to 28 15 William hours from a 30 46 William hour battery, it's possible that the new 5 nanometer CPU is more efficient, and we could get the same or better battery life but, like I said I'll, have to test the phone more to find out for sure all iPhone.12 models are going to come with MagSafe this year, which is basically just a set of magnets that are built into the back of the phone for use with apple's new MagSafe accessories. Like the wireless MagSafe charger, which will snap to the back of the phone, some cases that also have magnets built in and wallets, I've already done an entire video on MagSafe. So I don't really want to talk about it too much, but I think it's cool that we're getting a more simplified version of wireless charging on the new 12s it'll reduce the wear on the lightning port for sure, and MagSafe overall opens the door for lots of new charging accessories. The cameras also get a slight upgrade from last year. The standard wide-angle camera is slightly brighter at a 1.6 aperture compared to last year's 1.8 and there's now a LIDAR scanner on the pro and pro max models. This should at least in theory, help with low-light autofocus and have some extra AR bonus applications which I'll definitely be testing out too.
The cameras also can now shoot 10-bit adobe vision, HDR video, which is actually crazy for a phone. The big headline features for this year are 5g, which they so subtly pointed out in the keynote 5g 5g 5g 5g by g5g5g, the new design with the flat edges. The new OLED displays on the lower end models MagSafe and the improvements to the cameras and adobe vision, video I like what apple has done with these phones so far minus the lack of the headphones or charging brick in the box. Of course, I'm particularly interested in testing out the new cameras and testing that 10-bit Dolby Vision, video that they talked a lot about in their keynote, and I'll be definitely doing a video on that in the next I guess a day or so, if you're interested in seeing what these cameras can do, maybe subscribe. If you haven't already to be notified when that video drops until then, if you like this video, please give it a like to support my channel and, as always, have a great day.
