iPad Air 4 vs iPad 8th generation - Save or Spend?! (2021)

This video is brought to you by Squarespace iPad. Air 4 is better than the iPad 8th gen in pretty much every conceivable way, which is why I don't want to do a more traditional comparison and instead take a look at these devices through the lens of diminishing marginal utility, which is an economic term which relates to consumer satisfaction when buying more or spending more on a particular product, and I think the term is fitting when choosing between these two tablets, so essentially in this video, we're going to be determining whether you should save your money and go with the iPad, 8th, gen or spend more and go with the air 4. So, first up, let's discuss design and quite obviously the iPad Air 4 looks like the iPad Pro and the iPad.8Th gen looks like every iPad we've seen since 2013. , it's boring and home buttoned. However, it has a headphone jack, which is great for wired, headphone people and, besides being a lot more square and cooler. Looking the air 4 offers, you see, I can never say this USB type-c instead of lightning.

This offers a lot more versatility and connectivity which isn't really possible with the lightning port with the 8th gen. However, this device does lack a headphone jack, sadly, and here's two additional fun facts: iPad Air 4 has touch I'd implemented into the power button, which is equally convenient and kind of innovative when compared to the home button implementation in the 8th gen. In my humble opinion, and iPad Air 4 also accommodates Apple Pencil, 2nd gen, which attaches 2 and charges to the side of the device rather than having you plug it in like an awkward unicorn and lose it easier as well. However, the bottom line is if the new industrial look, the convenience of Apple Pencil, second gen and- or usually I can never say this USB type-c connectivity- is something you're looking for then by all means spend more if you can on the air 4. But if none of these aspects really matter to you, then you may want to save your money and consider the 8th gen.

Instead, next up, let's talk display, and it's a similar story here as well. The iPad r4 resembles the pro with a tiny bit: thicker bezels and half the refresh rate, which is also found in the 8th gen. So that's a commonality of the screen with the air 4 is also about an inch bigger and more color accurate compared to the more traditional bluer, but equally bright display found in the 8th gen once again. The cheaper iPad also has that disgusting air gap, which isn't a big deal to most, including myself, but to others it can be kind of a dealbreaker. The bottom line is, if you want a larger display with gesture based navigation and lamination spending an extra few on it might be the move, but if you don't need all that jazz and the slightly smaller, 8th, gen display is good enough for you and whatever you're doing then don't hurt your wallet and go with that.

Next up, let's very briefly touch on battery life here- and this is the exception category, because, with my experience with these devices, even though they have similar specs, generally speaking, they're going to get you through the day and then some fairly comfortably, they have great screen on time standby time you name it moving on next up, let's touch on camera quality and simply put iPad.8Th gen takes some pretty okay back facing photos and 1080p video. However, it does take trash, selfie photos and videos, but does do the trick for zoom, FaceTime, etc. iPad air 4, on the other hand, steps things up a notch shoots not so awful front photos and videos and shoots up to 4k video with the rear, 12 megapixel camera in comparison to the 8 megapixel camera found in the iPad, 8th gen. Even with that said, though, the bottom line is, if you need better camera quality, for whatever reason, the air 4 is the obvious choice, but don't think you should be buying it for the camera quality, as the 8th gen provides identical camera functionality.

And, finally, let's talk performance when it comes to everyday tasks. Like surfing the web streaming, video and note-taking the iPad, 8th, gen and air 4 are fairly comparable. Although the air 4 is going to be a tad bit faster, opening things in pushing animations, especially in the future, with future iPadOS updates. But when it comes to heavy stuff like graphically intense gaming and video editing, the air offers nearly twice, if not twice, the performance, with its a14 chip over the 8th, gens a12 chip bottom line, though, if you aren't doing anything that serious or intensive, and you don't care about performance, then the 8th gen is the clear winner here, although it is a fairly powerful tablet, I did a comparison between it and the 7th gen and the a12 is definitely a great chip. You can still do some heavy stuff on there, but if you can afford not to then don't, however, if you need additional power with the a14 for some creative tasks or if you like, graphically intense gaming, definitely consider the iPad Air and also consider the pro as well so with everything said.

Lets sort of tie things up here. The bottom line is if the iPad or 4 really fails to impress you with the additional utility it has to offer. Then the 8th gen is going to be a fantastic and affordable tablet for you. But if you are considering the air 4 for any of the advantages it has over, the 8th gen I'd definitely consider demoing it or just buying it outright. Also, if you are big on note-taking with an iPad, regardless of which one you get, I highly recommend you check out.
