Welcome back everyone: let's go ahead and talk about the iPad Air 2 and see how it holds up in 2021. Well, what I can tell you are, first the iPad Air 2. It came out in 2014, so it's not really like the newest latest and greatest iPad. It definitely is an older iPad for sure, but it's still getting software support. There still are some reasons why this thing is relevant. So I think that's why a lot of people still you know, appreciate this phone and talk about this phone.
Because of that certain aspect and funny enough. This thing actually has the same chipset as an iPhone 6. For the most part, it's a little more optimized, but it's almost the same thing, which is pretty funny, so I'll find some cheaper iPads that I'll recommend this year. I don't know if I'll link the iPad or two but some other iPads. I would recommend this year I'll link them down in the description below you can get them from there and help support the channel.
At the same time now on the front of the iPad Air 2, we do have that 9.7 inch panel, and it's actually a pretty decent panel, even still it's 1536 by 2048, and it was actually a pretty good panel when it first came out, and it still is a pretty decent panel for sure it definitely has a little of bezel over it. You know you have the home button on the front. You know the front camera as well, but I think this is a pretty timeless design. It does have touch ID which it looks like Apple is bringing back, thank god, but for sure, when it comes down to an iPad, it really doesn't look ancient, as stated before, with some other iPads that have come out this year and some other years prior, you know recently it still has kind of the same design. You know the home button and all that stuff.
So it's not really outdated, but it is a little dated not not a crazy amount, though on the bottom, the lightning port. You have a headphone jack on this iPad as well, which I'm pretty sure all the other iPads have headphone jacks as well, and on the back, you have the aluminum back, which I've always stated. It was definitely one of my favorite things about this. iPad is the feeling of it in the hand, it still feels extremely premium, and it really doesn't feel any cheaper than something like the iPad 8th generation. It doesn't feel any cheaper than even sometimes maybe even like my iPad Pro.
Of course, that thing is a little more expensive, and it has a way better design, and I, like that, one a lot more, but they kind of feel like the same thing a little, if you guys kind of know what I mean so it definitely when it comes down to the premiums feeling of the iPad Air 2. I still think the iPad Air 2 still feels extremely premium in 2021, considering the fact that this is like awesome around 100 iPad as well as that, it's almost seven years old. As of this point, so that of itself, you know it deserves some points in that aspect. So in terms of that that pretty much covers up the outside, but you do have a single camera setup on the outside on the back, which we'll go ahead and hit on right now it is a single 8, megapixel sensor, and you can do 1080p videos on it. I really don't think anybody's trying to do anything super crazy with this iPad.
I think they're pretty much just using it for something maybe, like you know, FaceTime calls or something, so you're pretty outdated when it comes in terms of anything else, no 4k, you know 4k on the front, but in terms of a video you know calling kind of thing for FaceTime or zoom colors or whatever it kind of gets the job done. So I think, in terms of that, it deserves something on the front. You do have that 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera that can film 720p videos and I think it's not a bad camera either if you're trying to just do FaceTime calls and stuff, but if you're trying to get an iPad that you want to go ahead and, like start filming YouTube videos on and all that stuff. I don't know if this is necessarily the iPad to do it, but I really think that's like a small sample case. I really don't think anybody's going out of their way to go ahead, and you know use this camera for something like that.
So in terms of like using it for Zoom calls or Google Hangouts or anything like that, I think this iPad kind of gets the job done, but really for anything else. It really wouldn't be my you know specific iPad to recommend so keep that in mind, but I think, for you know, for everyone else's sake. I think it kind of gets the job done for the most part, so in terms of the camera setup that really pretty much covers it up now kind of moving on to one of the more interesting things about the iPad, air, 2 and probably one of the most fascinating things about this specific iPad, and it always has shocked me. It was probably the software lifespan of this device so, like I said early on in this video, this iPad shares almost the same chipset as the iPad as the iPhone 6. For that matter, almost an iPad 6.
This thing has the same chipset as that specific device, but funny enough, the iPhone 6 stopped getting support at like iOS 12, but this thing has continued to get iPad. Os updates and iOS updates at a certain point, even up until now like this thing is still being supported, which is so crazy because you wouldn't think that an iPad like this would still be getting updates. But that's not necessarily the case. You are still getting a lot of software updates on this device up until this point now chances are. This thing is not going to be getting any updates, probably past iPad, OS 14.
So it's not going to get iPadOS 15, so I don't want to get anybody's hopes up, but the fact that it, you know, stood the test of time for this long is seriously some impressive stuff for this specific iPad, and I think, at the end of the day, that in and of itself deserves some credit for this specific device. I think the fact that this thing was able to withstand the test of time, for that long is seriously so impressive, and I think you know if this device deserves any credit. It definitely has to come down in the sense of just the software updates. This thing lasted an extremely long time and funny enough, I think another huge asset of this specific device is probably the battery life and the battery size. This thing had a 7 340 mm battery, which is actually a perfect size for this type of iPad.
I mean that's a massive size battery. This thing wasn't a crazy, great performing iPad anymore. It doesn't really have any like 120, hertz, refresh rate or anything like that. So it's a pretty base iPad in terms of just the know, features around it, so it doesn't really have anything. That's going to suck up a ton of power behind it.
So that is another. Pretty big asset of this iPad is the battery life, and when you have something that says optimized as iPadOS, I mean you're going to be getting some a perfect battery life from this specific device at the end of the day. So in terms of the whole entire, you know software and battery and all that stuff. This device really gets a thumbs up for me in my books for sure now, moving on to probably not the best thing about this iPad in this day and age is the performance aspect as sad as it is to say this iPad isn't really like you know as good as it used to be. So keep that in mind, I'm not going to say this thing was like the of that iPad when it first came out because it totally wasn't, but in this day and age it is a little of a difference.
You know it's a different beast than when it first came out, so it has that apply 8x chips inside it a triple core CPU with two gigabytes of ram, and you know what this thing is kind of like in a mixture between the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6, it's kind of like that type of performance you're getting. So if you're wanting something that'll last you know you. Let me just put it to you this way. If you're somebody like a student- and you just want to go ahead and take notes, you want to go ahead and just you know jot down stuff- and you know you're not really expecting to do a crazy amount of things with your iPad. Then I think this type of iPad is perfectly for those type of people.
If you're just you know highlighting notes and downloading PDFs and reading stuff- and you know even media consumption, if you want to go ahead and watch videos and stuff, this iPad can probably get that done, and I don't really think you would have too many complaints about it. But it's not until you start taking it up a notch. If you want to start playing some games on this thing that are kind of heavier intensive, if you want to go ahead and start, you know, video editing, or you know, real-time photo editing like crazy amounts of photos and stuff. That's where you're gonna start seeing some more problems with this specific device. I think for basic tasks like I mean like pretty basic tasks: you're, probably going to be okay.
I really don't think you're going to be too far off as long as you're, not comparing it side by side to a different iPad, but if you're, actually comparing it side by side and if you're trying to do some crazier stuff, such as, like I said before, video editing, you're trying to you know maybe you're trying to edit some. You know Instagram videos take talk, videos stuff like that or if you're trying to play some heavier intensive games. This iPad is probably not going to do you justice, it's probably not going to do so well, and that's probably one of the main areas where I'd stay away from this iPad is, if you want the next gen, if you want like some sort of decent performing iPad, this is not going to be it. I would probably recommend like an iPad Air, 3 and iPad Pro 10.5 inch. You know at the minimum, but the performance of this iPad definitely isn't that great anymore.
It may have been you know back in the day, but right now, it's really not something. I would recommend people. So in terms of that, that pretty much covers it up and to kind of sum up this video and to answer the question: is the iPad Air 2 still worth it in 2021? Well, this is what I'll tell you. I will probably say: no, this iPad isn't really worth it in 2021 anymore. I don't think it's that great of an iPad in this day and age, but, like I said before, that doesn't mean this iPad was always like this.
When this iPad first came out in 2014, I'm sure it was a pretty good iPad. I'm sure, like people had a lot of you know hype about it and I think rightfully, so this thing was, you know the next gen of the iPad Air and I really like the idea lineup. Even now with the iPad 4, I think it's a pretty killer device, but, as stated you know several times as I already have. You really want something: that's going to stand the test of time. You don't want to get an iPad right.
Now, that's already going to be outdated with the iPad Air 2, even though it's still getting softer updates and everything you are pretty much outdated. You are only going to be lasting as long as the software and even then it might get a little. You know software security update here and there, but for the most part, you're going to be outdated, you're not going to be getting any crazy new features with an iPad, OS, 15 or 16, or something like that, so you're already outdated. In that sense, it's not really that great of a performing iPad and really the main pros about this thing- are the software updates that it's had in the past. You know the longevity of it right now, maybe the battery life as well, and also the premiums of it.
You know it still feels like a pretty good iPad, but other than that, I would probably recommend everyone to kind of go up to something like an iPad Pro 10.5 inch or something along those lines.
