Huawei Mate 40 Pro review By TechnoBabble

So this is the Huawei Mate 40 pro now. I also have the Huawei free buds pro, and I'll be doing a full review of that really soon. So do remember to subscribe. So you don't miss that now the Huawei Mate 40 pro was actually released back in November last year. It was announced in October last year. You know, so I'm a little late to the party, I will admit, but better late than never all right.

So talking about the specs of the Huawei Mate 40 pro now. This has a Karin 9005g chip. So, yes, this supports 5g, and this is actually a 5 nanometer chip and I think only the second chip uh, the only other 5 nanometer chips, I know of is the Apple A14. So you get perfect efficiency, but we'll talk about the performance a bit later on. Now you get eight gigabytes of ram and in terms of storage, you have the option for 256 gigabytes or 512.

Now you do get the option for expandable storage, but the weird thing here is that it's not a micro SD card. It is a Huawei's own proprietary card. I think it's called a nm card, I'm not quite sure why they did that uh, but yeah, so you can expand it, but not with a micros card now. This also has ip68 water and dust resistance. Now, in terms of battery, this has a 4 400 mm battery, so it's got perfect battery life and in terms of charging.

So this has a 66 uh watt charging really, really fast charging as well. This even supports fast wireless charging which up to 50 watts if you're not mistaken. However, a lot of wireless charging uh docks are a lot less than that, so you're, probably gonna, have to get a Huawei one. Now this also supports reverse charging, so I can actually use this and charge something else that supports wireless charging, but do note that for that it's actually only five watts now in terms of operating system, so this uses android 10, but there is a massive asterisk to this and, of course, we'll talk about that later on now, of course, you get an in-screen fingerprint sensor on the screen and speaking of the screen, so this is an OLED screen with very weird dimensions. So this has a 6.76 OLED screen, weird, even the resolution, it's like 1344 2, really weird resolution. I don't know why that it is almost like: they built the phone to fit all the components and then after that saw what kind of screen they could fit in its weird, but it's a beautiful screen now the screen also has a refresh rate of 90 hertz and also supports hdr10, and it shows right when you're watching uh videos on this.

It is absolutely fantastic. The colors are crisp. The contrast ratio is fantastic, but of course it would be because an OLED screen the entire experience on this screen. Wise really fantastic, except for one gripe. Now, if you've seen my other phone review videos, you will know that I'm not a fan of curved screens, and I like the fact that a lot of phone manufacturers are slowly going back to flat screens.

This phone has a very pronounced curve on the side, and they've kept to it. For some reason, the Huawei Mate 30 also had a very pronounced curve. This one as well. They stuck to if it's nice to look at, but it can be a pain. Now you do get quite a lot of accidental touches with this.

I will admit, but not just that, because the screen is so pronounced even on the keyboard when you're typing, I do miss some side keys, some side, letters even like the shift key, and sometimes I do miss it. I do find that quite annoying, so Huawei. If you're watching this, you know I think it would be nice to either lessen the curve or you know, uh switch back to a flat screen now in terms of the camera. So, in fact, if you can look at the back, it has the unique camera model and I actually like it. I think it's really cool.

You actually reduce quite a bit of that phone bump when you put it flat down on the table, because it's right in the center, it doesn't move around as much as other phones that have the module on the left, but anyway, talking about the module. So it's a triple camera setup all right, so you have a 50, a whopping, 50 megapixel main camera, and it shows we'll talk about that later: a 20 megapixel ultrawide and a 12 megapixel telephoto lens and in the front it looks like you have dual lenses, but not exactly. You actually get a 13 megapixel selfie camera, but next to it, you get a 3d uh depth sensor. Now the camera on this phone. If I were to sum it up in one word, it would be fantastic of all the phones that I've ever reviewed on this channel.

This is the best by quite a fair bit and I would have to say it would probably be one of the best uh cameras on any phone on the market. Today I mean not just stills, like the videos are fantastic as well, but we'll talk about the still photos. First, now, like I said they are incredible, they are really sharp. I think it has one of the best color science as well. The colors are perfect, it's not saturated.

Yet it's quite vibrant right. You don't get a lot of super saturated, reds and greens that you get in some phones, even some flagships as well. They look absolutely fantastic. It's got perfect uniformity between the main lens and the ultrawide as well, which I really like now to test the camera out. I went to the resorts world c aquarium with my wife and her sister, and we just took pictures all the way from harbourfront all the way down uh to Santos, which is where the sea aquarium is, and we took pictures along the way we walked across the bridge, and I took some photos.

You know with the wide angle and the main, and I zoomed into the telephoto lens, and I was amazed at the sharpness. It was actually really incredible, but you know I also took some videos while walking across, and it has image stabilization actually on all three lenses, so whether you use the main, the ultrawide or the telephoto, the image stabilization is on, and it's also one of the best that I've ever tested out. It is so smooth. Even if you were to pan the camera on your phone, it feels like you're on a motorized gimbals. I don't know how they did it, but it's incredible now.

One of the reasons why I chose the sea aquarium to test out this camera is because it's supposed to have perfect uh low light photo capability. So I thought with the sea aquarium you're going to be in a lot of different scenarios in terms of light, there'll be a lot of bright areas, but there will also be a lot of dark areas where we can put this to the test and I have to say this phone passed it with flying colors, and I'm not just talking about the main camera. So what I did was the other phone that I have the only other flagship phone I have is the Samsung note 10 plus valid it's, not the latest one, it's about a year old, a year and a half old now, but that was a flagship phone not too long ago and the low-light capabilities of this compared to the Samsung phone. It's not really a competition. I took some photos comparing with the Samsung.

It was ridiculously good. It's so good to the point that I was kind of shocked. I don't know how they did it, so we took some shots like in front of one of the tanks where the fishes are and when you take it with a Samsung phone like your faces, are really dark because it adjusts exposure according to what's behind, but somehow Huawei managed to. I think maybe it takes multiple pictures and sort of stitches them together, but it was incredible, even the selfie camera, comparing with my daily driver with the Huawei, it was no pun intended night and day it's incredible and with the video as well. You know, looking back at some of the videos that we took with the phone, it's easy to forget that the videos actually came from this phone, so yeah, it's safe to say that the camera on this phone is one of the best, and it's best feature of the phone which now brings us to probably one of his worst, and it's pretty much the dealbreaker for me now, I'm talking about android, so you've got android 10 here, which is great, and it works really well.

In terms of you know, usability is really smooth, absolutely no complaints, but unless you've been living in a cave, you would probably know that you know there's been some sort of issues with the US, and china and Huawei has been put on a certain entity list by the U. S. , which means that American companies are not allowed to deal with Huawei. So it means that Huawei can't deal with intel can't deal with all sorts of American companies, and that includes google. Now they can still use the android operating system.

I believe, because it's open source, but that means that you don't have access to all of google services. So that means no Google Play Store. No google a game account syncing, no YouTube accounts, no Gmail, and all that you can't, it's just not going to work so Huawei has created their own app gallery, and you have to give credit to Huawei for the sheer amount of apps that they've already included in ad, which is perfect. First, the issue is a lot of times. There are a lot of apps like Facebook and Instagram and all that now, when you try to install it, you don't actually install it from the app gallery.

The search results brings you to a third party site for you to download the app now. There are, of course, security issues with that, it's from another site, you don't know where you're getting it from um Huawei does have an inbuilt thing where they actually search to the app to make sure or scan the app to make sure that there are no issues with it or no viruses. But you know it's. I still not very confident with that um, but that's not the only issue. Now there are quite a fair bit of ads on the Huawei gallery, which I'm not a fan of, and it's not just the ads in the app gallery now when you switch on the Huawei Mate 40 pro for the first time after you're done configuring, everything uh, you realize that suddenly like.

Why do you have so many icons on your screen? But no, there are folders with apps that you can download, so they're, basically putting it there and asking you to download it, which is not a form of advertising, and I don't like the fact that my screen is already populated with a ton of different apps, so yeah, it's a very hard sell, and I'm really not a fan of that now. Having said that, I can imagine there'll be quite a fair bit number of people who you know wouldn't have integrated into the whole google ecosystem that much, and it wouldn't bother them um. Then again, there are a lot of people who are myself included, especially people like me, who are YouTubers and I need access to google services. It's just not going to fly not having them on my phone. So let's talk about the price, so the Huawei Mate 40 pro in Singapore, with the 256 gigabyte storage, comes in at 1 598, basically 1 600.

So this is where it gets tricky. On hardware alone, I would say that easily, when you compare to the current prices of flagship phones nowadays this is definitely worth that money. It is a fantastically built phone, the camera easily one of the best, if not the best, on any android phone um. Everything else about it, just screams flagship, but I can't in good conscience right now recommend this phone because of the restrictions not having google services on it. Is that a heart? No recommendation? Well, no, not exactly because there might just be hope.

Now we know with what's been happening in the U. S. right now. We've got a new administration. Uh president orange is out.

Biden is in right now and that whole entity list and that restrictions was implemented by the previous administration. Now we've got the Biden administration in the US government, so there is a chance. You know uh, we don't know, yet there is a chance that they might reverse it. They might do away with that whole restriction, and if that happens and Huawei actually gets uh google services on this phone, then it would be a very easy recommendation problem. So for me, the Huawei, mate 40 pro is a real shame.

If it's sort of like having a Ferrari having a fantastic car and then not being allowed to drive it on public roads, and then you're going to have to build your own roads. It's just not going to be easy for you, and I do hope that Huawei does get google service on it, because, once that is here, this would easily be one of the best android phones on the market.
