Google Pixel 4a Review - The Only Phone You Really Need

Hi, my name is Calvin, and today I have here with me the Pixel 4a one of my colleagues at uh project gaming, picked up this phone and has been hyping it ever since I had a chance to play around with it, and I'm buying the hype. Uh phones in this price range include the iPhone SC and the OnePlus word, but out of all these phones, if I had to choose one, I'm going with the Pixel 4a, the reason being is at the price point of 349 us and just the overall package itself. It's uh, it's perfect value doesn't have the best specs, but it's good enough to the point where, unless you're doing excessive gaming, this phone will get you through your day-to-day, and you won't notice the drop-off in performance compared to other flagship phones. I think the theme of this phone is its good enough, and it's all most people really need. So, let's do a quick, unbox uh pretty standard. Here you get the phone.

The phone actually comes face down. As you can see, this is actually not my first time opening this. The chassis is extremely light. Only 143 grams, you can hold it a lot longer before your arm tires out. You get a quick start: booklet, um yep, and it comes in three languages: uh, English, French and Chinese.

It covers kind of the really basic stuff uh. I doubt most people actually even read this, but here it is anyways have a look. So next up we have the safety manual. I wish I could tell you more about it uh, but, to be honest, I didn't bother reading it either so yeah moving on uh. We have the sim card tray poker as I like to call it, and then we also have an 18 watt, uh charging, brick uh type, a to type c, adapter, uh type c charging cable, and we don't have any headphones.

Alright. So lets uh fire, this up excuse the giant black circle. That's just my camera. I'm going to be taking you through the setup. So first things.

First things. First, hmm! I guess we wait a few moments later here we go nice, graphics, select your language, mine's English, skip vision. Setting for now press start insert your sim card. I'm going to do that later hit skip connect to Wi-Fi skip that for now hit continue, select your time and date. This looks correct to me.

Hit next. Google services look alright. Assigning my life away hit, accept screen lock, you can use your fingerprint, pin connect the dots up to you. Do recommend you set this up and yeah. That's it.

That was quick and painless. What's left to do is uh sign into your Google account do the update, and you should be all set, and how does this relate to a cat photo? It doesn't. I just ran out of footage. Let's talk about the gesture control, because that's how you're going to navigate your new phone if you're uncomfortable with it, you can always go back to the tried and tested three button layouts at the bottom seen here, but for the gesture navigation uh. This is how it works.

Uh you have a bar at the bottom uh swiping. It up brings you to back to the home page uh pushing down one shows the drop-down menu twice for the extended drop down menu. Push it back up to hide it all. This should be familiar as this is how it works for most phones to switch apps uh swipe up from the bottom hold then release. Let me do it again take some time to get used to uh.

If you want to clear all the apps at once, you can hit the clear all on the far left. Uh individually, you can always uh swipe the apps away to go to uh your previous screen uh. You can uh swipe from either the left as seen here or the right. As seen here, edges uh google assistants uh can be activated from both the lower corners by swiping, inwards diagonally. I got a glass screen protector, making it tough to catch the edges.

Sometimes two things I like to set up every time I get a new phone, one of them is a dark mode. You go to settings, settings uh display, and then you hit dark theme. This helps with the battery since we're talking about the battery. It is a 3100 William. No wireless charging never cared for it since uh, slower than wire charging anyways.

Another thing that I find important is uh night light. You can set a time for it to automatically activate uh. You can do it over here right night. Light uh gives it a yellow, tint uh easier on the eyes. Let's talk about the design, they trimmed down the bezels and incorporated the hole, punch front camera.

Finally, getting with the times it's got. A polycarbonate backing does a great job in hiding all the fingerprints and smudges. The fingerprint sensor is on the back uh it's ergonomically placed, and it works. I can't knock it. You can also use a fingerprint sensor to pull down notifications um, and it's still got a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. There's a fan club for that sim card tray is on the left, and we have here on the bottom uh.

We have a single stereo speaker on the right in the middle. We have a type c connector, and I believe this is a microphone on the left. The speakers are adequately loud, 82 decibels, but at max volume it's a bit distorted here's a sample, please jump back to the design. The thing that does it for me the thing that pops is them to power button and listen to these clicks. If quality has a sound, I'm sure this is what it sounds like the phone fits perfectly in your hands.

Let's take a look at the display. It's a 5.81 inch, uh 1080p OLED display only 60 hertz, all the gamers out there are going to be triggered by 60hz uh, but for the average folks, uh it'll get the job done uh here you have me playing among us one of the hottest games at the moment. It's not the most demanding of games, but, as you see here, the graphic looks crisp on the screen. The colors are vibrant. In comparison, the more expensive phones have 90 hertz to 120 hertz, which enables smoother graphics.

You only notice the difference, comparing them side by side under graphic intensive applications. The display is a bit dim under direct sunlight, though, as you can see here, I'm a new with this game, and I'm struggling to figure out how to empty uh this shoot. Oh there, you go. I'm happy that google kept the OLED display at this price range, ensuring that the colors pop and the blacks are as deep as can be, I'm going to fire off the rest of the specs. It's got: a snapdragon 730g, 128, gigabytes of storage, no expandable storage, six gigabytes of ram uh, not the best hardware out there, as this is a budget phone, but it is good enough and that's kind of the theme of this phone uh that it's good enough, uh, no 5g, no IP rating, so don't be dropping this in the water.

There are two major reasons that you get this phone. One of them is being the software you get the stock android experience, so no bloatware, always first to get the latest OS updates. Uh. Google assistants. I know google assistants is available on other android phones, but it's featured here, so you're more likely to use it.

This is just me using the Google Lens uh, translating the Japanese on this uh ramen package, so another app that I find quite useful, that's offered by the Google Pixel. Actually, I think all the pixel phones have these now. This is the uh pixel recorder, app it essentially transcribes uh your speech, and it does it pretty well, I mainly use it uh to trans uh to do my subtitles for my videos uh before I had this, I had to do it like manually myself, but ever since uh, I got my hands on one of these pixel phones, I've kind of just used this, and it's uh pretty accurate. The other reason is, let's be frank, the real reason you're actually getting this phone is because of its photo taking abilities. The hardware is nothing special: it's got a 12.2 megapixel camera on the back and an 8 megapixel selfie camera on the front, but photo software on this is top-notch. Just believe me when I say this phone makes you a better photographer, it punches well above its weight.

Low light is where it shines and with its uh night sight mode, it's just point and shoot. So here are some of the photos I took with the Pixel 4a with and without night sight, as you can see most of the time, the camera combined with Google's intelligent software processing means you'll end up with a great photo in most scenarios. Here's my final thoughts, long story short. I would recommend this phone. I think we're getting to the point where a thousand dollars phone is providing diminishing returns, and it's more for the enthusiasts this Google Pixel 4a provides a sweet spot.

It focuses on the key aspects of the phone. I think consumers care about while making it easy on the wallet. That's the recipe for success. What I want to see in the future is improved software for video. I think we got a banger.

Thank you for watching my video on the Pixel 4a. Please subscribe and hit the bell notification, leave a comment below and give me the thumbs up, and I look to see you in the next video bye, guys hi. My name is Calvin and, as you can see today, I'm on a rooftop.
