Galaxy Z Flip 5G vs Galaxy Z Flip 3 - Buy Now or Wait? By Jonathan Casey

The next generation galaxy z-flip is set to be announced in the coming months. If the rumors are true, this phone is shaping up to be really exciting. However, with the current price of the z-flip in the z-flip 5g, you might be thinking. Is it a good idea to pick up the current model or wait for the new one so in this video we're going to explore the current z-flip and compare it to the rumored specs and changes of the upcoming version? Hey? What's going on people, I'm JC, and I hope you all are doing well before we get started. If you could do me a favor and answer a quick question, do you prefer vertical folding phones like the z-flip or horizontal folding phones like the z-fold, and could you explain why answering questions like this helps me the creator curate content in the future, for you, the viewer, thank you and moving on the original Galaxy Z flip released February, 11 2020. I remember like it was yesterday because it was the last tech event I attended before hit the fan.

It originally had a price tag of 1 380 bucks. Now you can pick one up for as little as 650, depending on where you look. In fact, I found an unlock model on Amazon for around 680 with free prime shipping, which I linked in the description. Rumors suggest that the new Galaxy Z flip will be between 9.99 and 10.99, and move upwards to 11.99 for the maxed out model. Considering Samsung hasn't been known to drop pricing on phones this much at launch.

I find it a little hard to believe, but for the sake of this video, let's just take the optimistic approach here. If the new z-flip comes in at these prices, it will certainly shake up the foldable market. At the same time, I think it's going to drive the price down even further on the current z-flip offerings, especially the 5g model. The build quality on the current z-flip is good. It features a polycarbonate plastic display with an extremely thin layer of glass beneath that plastic.

On the back side, it features gorilla, glass, 6. , the 5g z-flip features a matte glass finish. If you opt for the mystic bronze colorway, whereas the non-5g model features glossy finishes for all colors, the upcoming Galaxy Z flip will feature an improved display that could potentially be more resilient to scratches. This could be because of a better screen protector, stronger plastic or the removal of the plastic altogether and reinforced bendable glass. I'm not too sure how they plan on making it stronger, but all the rumors seem to point to an improved durability factor.

Speaking of durability. The backside will be made of gorilla glass Vitus, which should come as no surprise. This is great news and should improve the drop and scratch resistance of the phone. Also, the hinge is reportedly being updated on the new z flip, making it smoother and more durable, even though I really haven't had any problems with the current z-flip. The new z-flip has also been shown to have a two-tone design, with even more color options than previous years, which I'm definitely a fan of.

I just hope that they have a matte glass style. The main display on the current z-flip is great. It's a 6.7 inch OLED display with a resolution of 1080 by 2636. It produces vibrant, colors and punchy contrast, just as you would expect from Samsung displays, and it gets reasonably bright outdoors. The current display is capped at 60hz, which might bother some, but given who this phone is aimed at.

I really don't see it being too much of an issue. It has a screen to body ratio of 82.5 percent, which is pretty good. I mean you can see the bezels, but on a foldable phone, it's fine content. Consumption is also pretty good. I mean it's more of your standard smartphone experience.

The speakers are probably the biggest weakness of the current z-flip they get loud, but just don't really have the greatest sound, especially when compared to other smartphones from Samsung. The z-flip also features a cover display which can be used for notifications or for a tiny camera viewfinder. It's a 1.1 inch 112 by 300 display, and it's okay. I don't find it to be super useful because of how small it is, but it is better than nothing. The upcoming z-flip is rumored to have a slightly larger display at 6.9 inches with 120hz capabilities, I'm not certain if it will have the LPO style display we've seen on other Samsung flagships, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did base on Samsung's track record when it comes to displays, you could expect it to have slightly better color reproduction and contrast with a decent bump up in brightness from the leaked images and renders that I've seen. You can also expect the new z-flip to have smaller bezels, thus giving it a better screen to body ratio when it comes to the cover display, it's also getting a bump up and should be more useful than the current one, I'm not sure, on the exact size, but based on the leaks, it should be able to display more information and act better as a camera viewfinder, which is going to be pretty awesome.

Let's talk about the performance, the original z-flip packed the snapdragon 855, plus 8, gigabytes of ram and 256 gigabytes of storage. Several months later, it was refreshed with the z flip 5g, which utilized the snapdragon 865 plus in order to take advantage of the 5g modem. However, ram and storage options remained the same on that model. Performance wise, the 855 plus and the 865 plus are very similar. The a65 plus does have a slight advantage in the GPU department, but given that the z-flip is capped at 60 hertz and is basically utilizing a 1080p display, I don't think you'll see a difference in real-world scenarios.

The only reason to upgrade from the z-flip to the z-flip 5g is basically for 5g, which at that time wasn't a big enough reason to upgrade. Since then, the rollout for 5g has been insane with T-Mobile and Verizon aggressively expanding their networks, both the z-flip and the z-flip 5g feature 3 300 million power batteries. Battery life is average. I can get through a full day, but I do need to be cautious on how much I'm using this phone more than other phones. Typically, I get around five hours of screen on time.

Luckily, standby time has been pretty good, which allows me to go almost a full day most of the time, but you know, like I always say, battery life is very subjective. There are plenty of external factors with the biggest being how much you're on Wi-Fi versus 5g versus LTE, so your miles may vary for charging. Both phones, utilize, 15 watt, fast charging, it's laughable. That Samsung is still referring to this as fast charging and 9 watt wireless charging. It takes me roughly 1 hour and 40 minutes to charge the z flip flash torching.

The new Galaxy Z flip, of course, will feature 5g support, since it's set to utilize the snapdragon 888. According to the leaks. However, I think the leaks might have this wrong. I believe the new z-flip will utilize the snapdragon 888 plus, or the 888 pro, depending on the name. Qualcomm chooses geek bench scores have already leaked, showing slight improvements to multi-core and single core performance over the snapdragon 888.

I expect to see even greater performance in the GPU department, as well as slightly better efficiency. This would go right in line with the reports of the new z-flip. Actually, having better battery life, despite keeping the same exact battery size of 3 300 William hours, although there are no rumors suggesting faster charging speeds, I would hope that Samsung allows for 25 watt fast charging and 15 watt wireless charging, like the s21 series, can do in terms of storage. The new z-flip is set to come in at 128, gigabytes and 256 gigabytes, which should be paired with eight gigabytes and 12 gigabytes of ram. The current z-flip models do not feature headphone, jacks or SD card slots.

The new z flip will not have either one of these as well, not really a big surprise here, but something that you should be aware of. This is also the case with the IP rating. So if you were hoping for some water resistance, your sol the current z-flip features a fingerprint scanner along the side of the phone which the new z-flip will offer this as well. But this is where things get a little interesting. Some leaks and rumors suggest that the new z-flip will do away with the physical buttons and instead opt for touch capacitive buttons, like we saw on the HTC u12, I'm not completely sold on this rumor, but it is possible.

Lastly, the thing that upsets me, the most about the s21 series, is also happening to the new z-flip. It will not feature MST support when using Samsung pay, like the current z-flip models can do it's a damn. Shame that Samsung is ditching this technology and focusing solely on NFC type payments. I love you Samsung, but it doesn't make sense. Software-Wise the current z-flip models are running.

The latest version of one UI. The new z-flip is rumored to ship with one UI 3.5, which we haven't seen yet outside of beta leaks, but it should be pretty interesting. Flex mode is something that the older flip models offered, but third party app support has been very hit or miss. It's been great on Samsung's own apps, such as the camera, calendar messages, etc. , but even after all, this time, many popular apps from the play store still don't support flex mode, including all the games that I play supposedly Samsung, has worked closely with some developers, including google, and will be improving flex mode with the new z-flip by offering more third-party app compatibility.

I'm sure most of this will trickle down to the older z-flip models. So I wouldn't be too concerned if you're a current flip owner and have no intentions on upgrading one UI as a whole has improved tremendously over the years evolving from the Samsung experience, launcher or even touch wiz. One UI 3.5 is sure to be a hit, and I can't wait to see what features get past down to older phones. Alright. So let's talk cameras for a quick minute.

The current z flip features a dual rear camera design. The main sensor is 12 megapixels, which is paired with a 12 megapixel ultra-wide. It's capable of shooting 4k video up to 60 frames per second and 1080p up to 240 frames per second, and it has HDR 10, plus support on the front. There is a 10 megapixel, selfie camera that can shoot 4k video at 30 frames per. Second, these cameras are decent, but they're, not in the same class as the note 20 ultra or the s21 series.

They can take great looking images, especially during the day, but since they utilize older sensors, they just don't have the wow factor that other smartphones offer. The new z-flip will stick to the dual rear camera array, not too much information is available on the actual specs, but I'm almost certain it will utilize the 12 megapixel standard and ultra-wide cameras from the s21 series, from the renders I've seen. The camera area is larger on the new z flip, and the camera modules look bigger as well. This is similar to what we see on the s21 series. Additionally, the new z-flip should utilize the same 10 megapixel selfie camera as the s21 series, which is very capable now, I'm not certain if it will get 8k video recording, but you can definitely expect improvements in the 4k 60 frames per second department regardless.

The new z-flip should have a better camera experience overall and offer a few unique features not found on current flip models. So there we have it. That was a quick breakdown of my experience with the current z-flip and comparing it to the upcoming z-flip 3. Of course, these things are subject to change, but even if 50 of them are accurate, the new z flip is going to be a pretty good upgrade for current flip users. If the leak pricing is accurate, and it comes in at 999 or 1099, it very well might be best to wait and not purchase a current flip depending on your budget.

If your budget is tight, but you really want to dive into you know the world of foldable devices, I would still wait if I were you. The release of the z, flip 3 could drive the price down on current z-flip models even further, meaning that you might be able to pick up one of these for under 500 bucks. If you currently own a z-flip, I would definitely plan on upgrading, since Samsung will certainly offer great trade-in incentives. So now that you've heard my thoughts, I want to hear yours.
