Galaxy S20 Ultra In-Depth Camera Review - the Good & the Bad

This video is brought to you by Squarespace. What's up guys welcome to another video, my name is Sarah Delhi rounds of peachy, and today we have the galaxy s 20 ultra. This is exciting because I love to do camera tests. I am an iPhone person. So it's going to come from the perspective of an iOS user. Okay, let's why this phone is going to be so fun is because of this right here, so it has a 12 megapixel ultra-wide 808 mega pixel wide a 48, megapixel telephoto and then also a 40 megapixel, selfie camera and honestly, these curved edges.

They feel good. You know the note. It's a shirt boy, it's a sharp phone right, but let's do a little size comparison here, big boy, camera bump. We just love camera bumps over here, so I can't wait to test how this camera is going to be an exciting video. Thank you so much Squarespace for sponsoring this video online stores.

John uses it for his merch. All the time check online portfolio. That's like what I use it for super easy super beautiful! You can use my code for 10% off your first purchase of a domain or a website. So what are you waiting for you're, probably waiting until this video is over right? Yeah, okay, okay, I'll talk about it later, the other thing 100 times, zoom. Okay, we probably need to leave this office because.

This is I want to go shoot. I want to go hello. I want to get. Will let's go, let's go shoot well, okay, so, before you go outside and test the 8k stick with me, because this video took me so much longer than I expected almost a week because this camera this phone is like an onion lot of layers took me a while to peel back stuff, and I'm gonna. Tell you the good, the bad there's, some bad and honestly I just overall, we might need some firmware updates.

So stay tuned takes a while to focus like it won't auto adjust like I've, been having to tap it down. I wonder if that guy, if his camera shoots, Nate, okay, so we're a 8k, there's wobble! You definitely don't have that image. Stabilization in a cave, I mean I. Didn't expect that so look just as good, though I mean your eyes, can't even tell the difference right, yeah, ultra-wide the day when we're like working really is three back quality. That's like an owl right, yeah and then telephoto, so we're zoomed in right of my nostrils yeah.

So this is a new feature where boom Smart View and then oh, it looks perfect um crystal-clear. Really. That makes no sense, because the first clip that was right-side up it was flipped and upside down, and then we flipped it in the video editor and then played it, and it did it the right way. But that means still upset I mean the big thing about this Samsung SL 88k TV is the AI upscaling. So 4k footage should, ideally, you know, look as good as a 8k clip, but there's some semi obvious clarity, difference but then again we're filming this on a phone.

The difference isn't too crazy. I mean that look at that detail, so the Kodak you know could be better, but it's a phone 8k and a phone. That's pretty crazy. It looks crisp, but the other selling point, and probably the most important selling point of this phone are the new sensors that are almost three times as big as the previous and then, if you compare it to the iPhone 11 sensor, it's almost double the size, so bigger sensor, you're, actually gonna start to see some both from a smartphone camera which is great, and then it's the megapixels. It's the hundred and eight megapixels on the wide 40 megapixels on the selfie and 48 on the telephoto.

I truly believe this is the first pro phone camera, so many options, but with so many options you have to dig into so many settings to actually get what you need and what Samsung is advertising as their main features. I wish they'd put this as the default, but when you open up this camera you're not shooting a hundred eight megapixels. No, no! No! You got to go over to the one of four places more settings. Are you have to go up to where you decide the ratio of your picture, whether it's three by four or sixteen, by nine I, wouldn't think of looking here, and that is where you turn to the 108 megapixels and that's you can start shooting these pictures? I went two days: shooting pictures and selfies without changing that and thinking that I was shooting these high-resolution pictures. A lot of other people are doing them, but no, you have to go into those settings okay, so we got that out the way.

Now, let's look at these pictures that are actually a hundred and eight megapixels whew, so sharp this is when you're really going to tell the difference. Here is a normal selfie that is 2 to 3 megapixels, and then you click 40 megapixels in the settings and boom. It is more sharp, but it's very strange. You can't even go in the beauty filter settings when it's set to 40 megapixels, but you still have that Samsung skin smoothing where everything just seems a little too soft. Here you see it compared to the iPhone, but still the skin tones kind of weird right.

So the two main marketing features of this fancy: s20 ultra phone are mutually exclusive. You have a spacesuit, and you have the 108 megapixel sensor, so space zoom, as we've seen with pictures, it doesn't look good at a hundred times X, it's something that you can say you have, and it's so great. It really is a great marketing point, but you're never actually going to use it unless you're trying to read a sign two miles away. In that case, hey it's actually pretty useful. This picture that I got of like a bird on top of the flag on this picture, where it was so far away kind of blew my mind.

I didn't even know there was a bird on the flag, but in terms of taking a picture and posting it and sharing with people, I'm pretty sure 30 times is going to be the max that you're going to hit to have a usable picture so whether you're using the hundred times zoom in normal photo mode or you're, switching over to the 108 and make a pixel and then zooming in you, people of the world who need to see things up. Close Jessica Jones, maybe some P is well. You no longer have to carry a camera around because you have your $1400 fancy s 20 ultra one may ask: why would Samsung bury the 108 and 40 megapixel features of this phone in settings? Why? Wouldn't it just be default? I mean, of course you have the file size. So when you're shooting 108 megapixels, it's not the best experience right now. It's really slow to take the picture and the file sizes are 30 megabytes.

The selfie isn't that crazy, instead of a two megabyte file, it'll be 8 megabytes, so I think if people are buying this for a pro camera, they're going to be able to handle those file sizes, especially when you start at 128 gigabytes of internal storage. Here it's not really something you have to worry about, but then the other stuff, hopefully can be updated in a firmware update. You know things like you can't shoot in Profit mode when you're in the 108 megapixel mode and then when you're in video mode, if you're shooting in 60 frames per second and 1080 or 4k, they don't allow you to switch to the ultra-wide or the telephoto just weird stuff. Overall, what I'm seeing from this camera is fantastic, but again, there's just some quirks here and there when we were out and about in Central Park and the Sun was setting it was beautiful, Golden Hour, you know that's the one time it actually looks good to have the Sun straight on your face and here's an example against the iPhone 11 Pro and dink Samsung. You just have very hard time with shadows and highlights, and just skin tones and over saturating pictures.

It's really crystal clear: I was shooting in 108 megapixel mode like moi, so there's definitely potential for this to be so great because look at the both, you know it's so much more blurry in the background and the iPhone, but the iPhone really just crushes it with being an overall, better photo. Night mode looks great, although you're going to run into some issues when you're in lighting that isn't dark enough for night mode, but isn't bright enough to really use this. This beautiful sensor, if you try night mode, it's just gonna over saturate it and make it look terrible. So just don't do that. Okay! So let's go back to video.

My personal favorite we saw 8k earlier, so I was super impressive. This is a feature in a phone we have arrived. The future is here super excited and the 8k video Snap feature is actually pretty cool where you can pull thirty-three megapixel stills from that video, definitely similar to their new feature single. Take that you guys saw in my Z flip video, where you hold up your camera for 15 seconds. It takes a plethora of photos and videos, and it basically makes it where you can decide after the fact of filming what you want.

The 8k video snap and single take I think is a great move towards Samsung blending in software with their camera experience for you to not have to worry about. Ooh, do I want to get a photo or video. No, how about both? You don't worry about it. Overall. This larger sensor is a huge win in a great step for phone video, not to look like phone video.

However, the autofocus is terrible. It doesn't even like hunt it just kind of refuses to grab onto someone's face unless you go and tap your screen again on to someone's face which it's like when it comes to phones, you want to set it and forget it. That's the whole point of using a phone over a DSLR or mirrorless camera. The autofocus should just work right. Luckily, you can go over to Pro video mode and do manual focusing, which makes it look very professional, but this is a phone.

This isn't a full-frame sensor like we need. We need good autofocus, which again, hopefully, will come in a firmware update, which there's already an update going around people already in Korea. Have it, but in terms of the camera improvements, it's just mentioning a better flash experience. Nothing in regard to this stuff, so I, just I, couldn't wait any longer to get out this video it's already been a week, so maybe we'll have to do an update later on the 48 megapixel telephoto might be the underROG here. Not what a lot of people are talking about, but holy smokes.

Does it look good? The optical image stabilization is fantastic Bravo. The slow motion on Samsung phones has always been so great and fun to use. You actually get two different sections in the editor to have those slow motion experiences. However, the ramping up to the slo-mo part and out you know into the normal part, is super, abrupt and dare I say back just the little things like the ramping in and out of the slo-mo needs improvement. So listen when the iPhone 11 Pro came out.

There was a lot of people saying. How is this pro write? Pro means you have options, so I truly think this is the first pro camera on a phone. However, that comes with those options. That means that there's a ton of settings that you have to pay attention to in literally three to four to five different places, but yes, the bigger sensors. The super-high resolution is very exciting and very Pro I'd like to follow up on my comment on my first video about this phone in terms of these settings just being hard to work with, you can actually customize those, so you can bring them from that more cab and drag and drop on to your main bar.

So that's really nice because you can customize that to what you use the most I would say. These pro features are almost perfect. It would just be so lovely if we got a 24 frames per second option. We have that 4k 24 frames per second option on the iPhone there's already so many settings, please Samsung. Maybe a K is at 24 frames per second, so you can do it.

We literally only talked about the camera. That's usually my favorite thing to talk about, and obviously there are so many things to cover. So let me know what you guys think. Obviously the 120 Hertz display is great. Just for everyday tasks like watching a Twitter timeline with 120 Hertz is crazy.

There's 5g capabilities, all the things at T $13.99 price. What do you guys think? Let me know in the comments below we're gonna: kick it to Sarah back in the office for Squarespace.
