Battle of the Compact Flagships: Samsung Galaxy S10e vs Sony Xperia 5

Hello everyone- this is mike welcome to my channel mike the tech-savvy. I have here in front of me two compact flagships that you can buy right now in the left corner. We have the Sony, Xperia 5 and in the right one we have the Samsung s10e if you're on the lookouts for a compact flagship. Well, you have these two variants. You have the Pixel 3a and 4a, which was just launched and which I couldn't get my hands on to hopefully very soon I'll. Do that as well and that's about it from android.

If you want an apple of course, you can go for the SC or for the newer or the next gen iPhone, which will come up this year and which will be very compact, but other than that you don't have much choice, especially if you're looking for some features like the headphone jack. It's its a difficult market right now. Everyone wants big devices, and it's quite difficult to find a compact flagship anymore. Now, let's discuss these two, so here we have a compact ship, compact yeah by 2020 standards, flagship from Sony, and here we have the definite smallest compact flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy s10e. Let's compare the size a bit, so if we put them side by side, you can definitely notice that the s10 is shorter by how much by about 16 millimeters in total, which is well more than enough, you can definitely feel it in your pocket.

The width is quite the same about two millimeters in favor of the Sony device, and the thickness is quite similar, no differences here. The weights of these two are quite similar as well. The s10 wins by about 10 grams, which is not much. You have gorilla glass 6 here on the front and on the back, whilst on the s10e, you have gorilla glass, 5 on the front and gorilla glass 5 on the back. Both devices have an ip68 water and dust resistance, which is good.

It's a definite must for a complete flagship device. This is something that, for example, the Pixel 3a 4a are missing. Both displays are perfect. Quality displays 6.1, inches and 5.8 inches. This one has a 19 by 9 aspect ratio.

This one has a 21 by 9 aspect ratio. This in turn makes this device more usable in day-to-day activities. As far as I'm concerned, at least I'm watching a lot of YouTube and if you're doing this, you will see the black strips while the black bars at the sides when you're watching most of the videos on the Xperia device. They are quite similar other than this. So we have a 1080p display on both which can support HDR.

They are really, really good quality wise now, as far as platform goes here, of course, we have the snapdragon 855, unfortunately, me being in Europe, I have an Enos based s10, which definitely cuts into the battery life. Well, a lot, but there's a good. Well, let's say good news. This device on the US market has the same CPU as this one. They are quite similar in this regard as well: six gigabytes of ram, both 128 gigabytes, internal storage, dual sim and micros card slots.

As far as the camera goes, you can definitely see that with the Sony device we have three sensors, including a telephoto one, with the Samsung. We only have two an ultrawide and a white snapper, so this is kind of a difference between the two. If you definitely feel the need for a telephoto lens as well. Probably the Xperia is a better choice from this standpoint. Now, if we take a look at the ports, let's check out the bottom of the devices check it out.

Here we have a speaker here on the bottom, USB type-c microphone here and here and headphone jack no headphone jack. So this is a major difference and one that seals the deal. For me at least, I really love a headphone jack in a phone on the other side. We have a microphone here, another one here and a sim card tray is on the top for the Samsung. It's right here on the side for the Sony, it's more or less the same approach, the difference being the fact that to remove it here for the Samsung you'll need to have something sharp to push through here a pin or something was for the Sony.

You can very easily remove this with your finger very easily and on the side on the left side, we have fingerprint scanner here on the top, which is quite nice. I really do feel that the Samsung device is a better well a more polished device. From this standpoint we have the fingerprint scanner here, and I got used to it being here, and it's way easier to use, and it's a better quality fingerprint sensor for the Sony device. The fingerprint sensor is down here, and it's not the same thing with the power button, so it's quite confusing at first. You will get the hang of it, but it's definitely a much better implementation on the s10e overall selfie cameras.

Well, there's not much difference, of course, because on the Samsung device we have no bezels. Basically, we have this punch, hole, camera, 10, megapixels, and it can film in 4k. Whilst here we have an 8 megapixel sensor, which can only film in 1080p, so it doesn't really bother me. I don't really use this front-facing camera at all. One thing that the Sony device has, and this one doesn't is the notification led which can be a dealbreaker for me, it's not really anymore.

I get used to not having a LED notification anymore, so yeah, it's okay. You also have a very weird thing: called dynamic vibration yeah this, which is weird so just take a look at the description here. It's weird, and I didn't like it that much I deactivated this option. Probably the first time I used the device- and I saw how unusual it is and, of course now coming to a more interesting point and probably the most important one, at least for me- battery life, um yeah, it's definitely better on this device. The Enos CPU really draws a lot of power, and it takes destiny further down the scale when talking about battery life.

It's not really a very good device from the standpoint, but of course, given the period that we're living right now and the fact that we're spending a lot of time inside the house, it's its not really that bothersome anymore! It's its all right! I'm really looking forward to the moment when Samsung will decide to use snapdragon CPUs worldwide. If this moment come anytime in the near future, you have very similar charging capability on both so 15 watts versus 18 watts. Another advantage to the s10a is the fact that you have wireless charging and also reverse wireless charging yeah it's kind of interesting. It's indeed not the most efficient charging, but it's its all right um. I won't really compare the pieces of software between these two because, as you can see here on the s10e, I have a lineage OS ROM, which, as far as I'm concerned, is much better than the stock Samsung drone, which can at times feel bloated, can have a lot of slowdowns even on devices like the s20 or the note 10 or devices which have humongous amounts of ram, CPU power and everything else, but they can still lag in the Samsung stock ROM.

Whilst this lineage OS feels incredible, really responsive, I really like that you can customize the buttons here on the bottom, so you can have the same layout as here on the left. This is the typical layout that you have in pixel devices, and I really love it. Compared to what Samsung has done performance wise things are more or less the same. Both devices are really fast. They definitely feel like flagships, and you won't feel any major slowdowns you can play whatever games.

You want in high settings if that's your cup of tea, no problem whatsoever. I won't talk too much about the camera on the s10e, just because I have a custom ROM here, and this really affects the camera quality. So if the cameras are really important to you, do not install the Linux us ROM on Samsung devices, of course, I don't think there are Linux OS ROMs for the Sony, Xperia device, so yeah. This is another point, but you don't really need it. Given the fact that it's very stock-like, if I would have to choose a device out of these two, I would probably go with the s10 as a winner just because it sticks a bit more boxes, at least as far as I'm concerned priority wise.

I like the fact that you have no bezels. I like the fact that we have a headphone jack. Furthermore, I would say that, for me, this is a better device. Overall, you have very good support for custom ROMs for any kind of customizability that I got I've gotten used to through the years. So, if you're looking for a stock like experience, if you're not looking to alter the experience in any way, both devices are perfect choices.

It's just a matter of personal preference. The specs are more or less the same as I've told you before. The look is more or less the same. It's just a matter of well small things which can lead you to one choice for the other. One last thing that I'd like to mention camera wise is the fact that on the Sony device, you have this camera button here, which is quite nice and which means that you can launch the camera right away.

Well, normally I had to press it three times now, so you can press it midway to focus on the Samsung. You have no such thing. You have some shortcuts, but it's still not the same thing. Nothing can really place a hardware camera button. That's for sure I've tried to compare these two devices.

My personal opinion is what I told you before, but I cannot really tell you that one device on the other is the definite winner. They have advantages and disadvantages both. I have had both these devices as daily drivers, so if you have any questions about, any of them feel free to write me anything in the comment section below this was the comparison video for today. If I get my hands on a Pixel 4a, I will definitely include it and make a comparison. I'm the guy that likes compact flagships and if I get my hands on that one, I will definitely be very thrilled, and I will bring it up on the channel as soon as possible.
